Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes the excellent blueprint laid down by Origins and expands on it. It’s more dynamic than any game in the series, and gives the very best modern, open-world RPGs a run for their money when it comes to the sheer amount of content and level of quality found across the board. Mileage may vary on the story front, but when it comes to gameplay, Odyssey is one the best Assassin’s Creed games to date.

Mega Man 11 is more or less exactly what any fan of the series could want in a sequel: the classic experience they know and love with a few modern upgrades thrown in to keep it from feeling stale.

Astro Bot Rescue Mission is a delightful PSVR platforming adventure. It’s easily one of the best VR platformers out there, and is an excellent addition to any PSVR library. Its fun, lighthearted tone mixes with fantastic platforming game design to create a game that VR fans won’t want to miss.

While fighting games haven’t quite slid into obscurity thanks to the shift to 3D, side scrolling beat ’em ups have mostly dried up. We have seen a handful of notable titles over the years, though, such as Viewtiful Joe, The Warriors and Castle Crashers. One interesting attempt to modernize the genre that I’ve seen recently has been Royce Games’ awesome looking, still-to-be-released, Risk One’s Neck, which not only introduces high fidelity visuals but also brings in environmental interaction. Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle acts like an interesting retrospective of the genre and Capcom’s contributions to the industry when played solo. When you have a friend along for the ride, though, the titles’ appeal still shines through. You can plan attacks, cringe at some of the outdated, homophobic, racist and misogynistic oddities of the titles and generally just shoot the breeze while blasting through hundreds of baddies looking for the weirdest, coolest boss fights and background details. In all honesty, I wouldn’t have finished any of these were it not for the unlimited lives, but because of those, I got to appreciate the games more than would have ever been possible in arcades. All in all, I had a blast sitting on the couch, chatting with my girlfriend, drinking beers while we beat things up.

A still has some tricks up their sleeve on the gameplay front that can continue to make FIFA an enjoyable, albeit complex, sports sim.

NBA 2K19 isn’t the most exciting release the series has had. There really isn’t anything that makes it stand out significantly, other than the overall level quality that we’ve come to expect from the series. Another year, another outstanding release for the series. There still isn’t a better alternative when it comes to video game basketball.

There are some things that I can nitpick about, but all in all, this is a pretty great game and a great way to end Lara’s origin story. Fans of the rebooted Tomb Raider series are sure to be pleased, and if you’re someone who has yet to get into the franchise, maybe now is the time to do so.

Divinity: Original Sin II – Definitive Edition is absolutely the best possible version of an already exceptional role-playing game. It’s the same incredibly deep choice-driven experience it was when it launched a year ago, just with a slew of improvements thrown in for good measure. The console version is just as much fun to play as its PC counterpart, and its controls get the job done in a way that’s limited only by controller itself. This game is a must have for anyone who loves classic RPGs and wants to know what would happen if they actually dared to put their crazy ideas into practice.

Firewall: Zero Hour borrows from some of the greatest shooters around and tacks on some great VR support. However, the sum is not quite equal to its parts and the feeling one gets from playing the final game is that it’s somewhat incomplete and not worth investing much time in. If you get past the flaws of a small player community and the team gets some patches out then Firewall could be a true VR classic. For now it’s just another shooter that might be worth checking out by some, but most should avoid.

The Monster Hunter franchise debut on the Switch is nothing short of phenomenal. Significant visual upgrades made possible by the more powerful console accompanied by a slew of gameplay additions make this a must-own for Monster Hunter fans.

Guacamelee! 2 is brilliantly made game. Its animation, character, enemy and level design, sound and music are freaking fantastic. Near perfect for the most part. The choice to absolutely launch every idea they had at players makes the game a little less marvelous than it could have been, but for most people that won’t stop Guacamelee! 2 from wrestling its way into their hearts and uppercutting out grin after grin.

We Happy Few is a game of high highs and low lows. It’s certainly far from perfect, with questionable stealth mechanics, sometimes derivative gameplay, and a lack of polish that intrudes on the fun. However, it also offers a totally unique world full of interesting characters and places. The core of the game holds a lot of intrigue as well, with its alternate history motif making for great story and gameplay opportunities. If you can look past the flaws, it’s definitely worth a play.

Dead Cells takes some of the very best ideas from Rouge-lite and Metroidvania titles to make an action packed platformer that smartly allows the player to unravel the game’s secrets.

What Sonic Mania Plus boils down to is, do you like classic Sonic and did you miss out on the first release? If so, you should buy this one immediately. It almost perfectly encapsulates what made the original Sega Genesis and CD games so much fun while updating the style so that it feels fresh and new. Sonic Mania Plus adds to what the original did, making it the definitive version of Sega’s excellent revival. If you do already own the original release then it’s just a $5 download, which should feel like a bargain for fans. Just don’t buy the full release expecting something totally new and you’re all set

Shining Resonance Refrain might be outclassed by modern JRPGs, but if you judge it on it's own merits, you'll quickly find that there is a lot to enjoy.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus on the Nintendo Switch is the worst version of a great shooter. With so much work needing to be done to get to an “acceptable” level of visual fidelity for a modern game, it’s no wonder that third parties aren’t rushing to put their games on the console.
