Unless you love BlazBlue and short-burst, super basic brawlers enough to drop $5.99, this will be far too superficial an endeavor to warrant a purchase, even with its charming art design. It’s not an offensively bad game; it’s just for lacking in content and value.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare improves upon the Xbox One debut thanks to the addition of a few more maps, characters and modes. They still don’t quite edge it into greatness, but this is a stronger package than what PopCap originally debuted. That being said, all four of the DLC packs the PS4 version includes are (and have been) available on the Xbox One as free downloads. Remote Play is novel, but ultimately throwaway, and the resolution increase from 900p on the Xbox One to 1080p on the PS4 is minimally noticeable. Garden Warfare remains a colorful and entertaining experience no matter the platform and one we hope will continue to grow.

Celebrating two years of hard work, Ultimate Evil Edition is the indeed the ultimate version of Diablo III. Considering the package includes the original game, the Reaper of Souls expansion and immeasurable improvements, it’s also a great value. A control scheme perfectly designed for a controller and some of the best co-op yet on PS4 and Xbox One make it worth diving into for players old and new. Delivering the full HD experience, Blizzard’s jump to current-gen consoles is a flying success.

There’s a lot to like about CounterSpy, but not enough to love. Its interesting polygonal graphics spawn original PlayStation-era nostalgia, but its archaic shooting mechanics feel just as dated. The campy dialogue should provide players with a few smiles, but there simply isn’t enough of it. CounterSpy‘s awesome improvisational take on stealth can be hindered by both framerate inconsistencies and occasional perspective oddities. Clocking in at roughly two to three hours, it feels as though it ends a few hours too soon. CounterSpy is worth setting aside a random Saturday afternoon for, but it’ll find a way of sneaking out of your memory just as quickly as it came in.

If you already own Metro 2033 and Last Light, Metro Redux is a hard sell. The improvements, while admirable, don’t make enough of a difference to be worth another $50 purchase. These are still the same creepy, atmospheric games from the past, just with some polish on the scratches. But if you haven’t played either of the Metro games, Metro Redux is the version to get. With superb graphics and improved AI, Metro Redux delivers two of the most alternative first-person shooters released in the last decade, all with the same shimmering luster that a new gaming generation can deliver. The series' mood is palpable, one of the best examples of ambiance used in a video game in years. The intelligently designed stealth sections and multi-layered locations deliver a sense of depth that many other survival horror games cannot touch. Metro Redux doesn’t provide enough new content to be worth repurchasing except for the most die-hard fans, but if you haven’t experienced the masterful adaptation of Glukhovsky’s series yet, fix that mistake and get Metro Redux on the double.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment isn’t just a bad game. With its awful story, tedious combat, and inexcusable translation, it’s an out and out insult to anyone who might buy it – fans of the series especially. These are people who can put up with - and even enjoy - the most debased, pandering garbage Japan has to offer, but I have a hard time believing that even they could accept this rushed, broken, and imbecilic excuse for software.

Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds is a splendid brawler. It radiates personality and has evidently been treated with care by its developers. Comprised of solid combat mechanics, an effective blend of customization, gameplay modes, and a supporting narrative, in addition to charming hand-drawn aesthetics, this old-school beat’em up is a game that can be enjoyed by practically anyone. Thus it seems safe to say that nothing has been lost in the move from console to handheld as this adventure is just as fun-filled and challenging as the original; if anything, this is the definitive version.

The Swapper is yet another indie coup for Sony, as it is very clearly one of the best puzzle games to come out in years. This is a well-designed experience that has the potential to win over non-puzzler fans. Its simple mechanics and gradual difficulty curve allow players to never feel overwhelmed, making it perfect for puzzle veterans and rookies alike. Those with a PlayStation 4 and a Vita will find themselves bouncing between the two versions because of how perfect of a cross-platform title it is. The Swapper would stand on its own as a well-designed puzzler, but its excellent narrative and understated sense of terror make it an experience to remember.

Anyone who grew up loving the Ghouls 'n Ghosts series, but hated the sharp difficulty curve, will love Rogue Legacy. It's tough, but fair, seamlessly blending RPG-style upgrades into an action-platformer. As great as it was on the PC, it's able to reach a whole new audience on consoles and the bite-sized nature of play sessions means it translates to the Vita perfectly. Those seeking a satisfying, skill-testing platforming experience will love Rogue Legacy. It puts a fresh coat of paint on a variety of well-worn gaming genres and ends up a must-play gaming experience.

Though it has a triple-A presentation, everything about One Piece: Unlimited World Red feels c-grade at best. Combat feels stiff, unresponsive, and overwrought, though it captures the visual excitement of the anime nicely. If that were all there is to the game, it would be pretty average, but everything else just gets in the way. The side quests, minigames and crafting mechanics are all awful, and you’re forced to sit through far too much of them before you can get to the… well, not “fun,” but the game you paid for. Next to games like Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle, Unlimited World Red is a real disappointment.

It's unfortunate that the Dynasty Warriors formula couldn't have been better tailored to such rich source material, as there was tantalizing potential for Gundam Reborn to be the definitive interactive Gundam experience. But it succeeds at what it aims to be: an action game full of epic displays of power and an endless supply of enemies to destroy, despite little variation in gameplay. Gundam and Dynasty Warriors fans will inevitably enjoy it most, but it remains approachable with streamlined storytelling and the subtle allure of stylish mobile suits. It would have been nice to have seen more equal representation of other popular Gundam series like Gundam Wing and G Gundam, and a more ambitious realization of each specific battle, but overall Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn is a game brimming with content and replayability, and it's hard to ask for more than that.

When Blizzard announced they were making a digital CCG, we all expected it to look and sound beautiful, and there was little doubt that it would be well-balanced, but I don’t think anyone anticipated this level of sophistication and subtle brilliance. Its turn-based nature and straightforward mechanics make this one of the most immediately accessible competitive games ever devised, but at the same time its depth is positively cavernous. None of its contemporaries, digital or physical, can match it in terms of value per dollar. You can play endlessly for free – and believe me, you’ll be compelled to – but you also won’t mind forking over a bit of dough for the satisfaction of opening packs. From its gameplay to its aesthetics to its accommodating pay model, Hearthstone is, in a word, elegant.
