Frustrating combat aside, it’s almost astounding how successful The Fall is at distilling the core Deus Ex experience onto a mobile device. The mysterious and well-told story, steady stream of powerful new augments, and impressive game world all combined to create a mobile experience I didn’t want to put down after I started.

Dark is a stealth action adventure that's brimming with good ideas, but poor AI, a weak story, and repetitive gameplay drive a three-pronged stake through the heart of its entertainment value. Dark's cel-shaded settings occasionally allow the otherwise drab experience to shine, but not without a forgettable protagonist and clunky movements sinking their fangs into the fun.

NCAA Football is hitting the glass ceiling of this console cycle. The gameplay itself is better and more refined each time the game is released, but when it’s surrounded by dated visuals, dated audio, dated modes, what’s a fan to do? There’s a good football game here, but it’s far from an impressive package.

Magic 2014 remains a great, convenient, and affordable way to enjoy this now 20-year old card game. Slivers are a lot of fun to command and sealed decks provide more freedom than ever to build your own army. The only issue is the clunky manner in which it runs. Every small screen change and player move seems to be a monumental effort for the engine. Still, I love the varying challenges this version throws at us and hope to be playing Magic 2015 in a year’s time.

Chronicles of Mystara’s long-awaited English-language home debut has been handled with great care, bringing us an experience that’s virtually identical to the arcades and successfully tugging at nostalgic heartstrings. It’s great to see these two former arcade-exclusive mainstays finally get the restoration they deserve.

Project X Zone is often funny and consistently frantic – two traits not necessarily associated with tactical RPGs. Its story is confusing and the chapters slavishly follow the same repetitive formula, but the superb battle system makes repetition not just tolerable, but enjoyable. Familiarity with the various franchises it pulls from will certainly add to your enjoyment, but its anime-inspired hijinks provide a great strategy fix.

Viewed side by side, it might be tough to distinguish Company of Heroes 2 from its predecessor. When examined up close, the changes introduced to distinguish warfare on the Eastern Front of World War II from the Western are as problematic as they are interesting. However, that comparison is to one of the finest real-time strategy games ever made, and being mostly as good as that makes this an excellent game on its own. Play the original first (it’s cheap) but Company of Heroes 2 satisfied my appetite for more.

Behind Deadpool’s demented humor, creative script, and brilliant sight gags is a fairly conventional, generic action game. It’s not bad, but it’s not particularly good, either – and without oodles of hidden secrets or unlockables to discover, there’s really no reason to replay it once you’ve finished. Developer High Moon gets the character and brings the funny, but none of the action finesse that would make Deadpool stand out. If you’re a fan of boob jokes and dumb, repetitive, yet mildly fun gameplay, then Deadpool will offer you a weekend’s worth of silliness.

Coming in at over 2GB and $20, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a large and expensive game in the mobile market, but that shouldn't dissuade strategy gamers from giving it a try. Even without the multiplayer or DLC features, it offers more depth than you'll find in most, if not all, other strategy titles in the App store. There's more than enough game here to justify the space the game will take up in your budget and your iPad memory.

Magrunner isn’t as exciting as some of the games to borrow from Portal’s song sheet, like the weird and wonderful Antichamber. It’s one of the stronger puzzle games, though, with a clever new mechanic and design that’s both interesting and adept at luring you into exploring its subtleties. Even so, it’s not interesting enough to excuse the dull narrative, and only being able to play with a select few bits of the level robs the experience of any real sense of power or freedom. With its two halves combined, Magrunner is a solid game, but one that feels like a testbed for something much better - once the designers have the guts to fully chart a new path instead of relying on tried and Aperture Science-tested concepts we’ve all already seen played out.

Like Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage, Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep is an example of how DLC can match, and in some ways surpass the quality of the original release. With eight to 10 hours of brand-new enemies and locations that have been built from the ground up to look like nothing else in all of Borderlands, it offers a great value, especially to those who can appreciate the cavalcade of nerd culture references it makes. Sure, the loot rewards are a bit light, but the chance to give a virtual King Joffrey a proper smack in the face with the butt-end of a rifle will be reward enough.

Muramasa Rebirth is a faithful port of Vanillaware’s classic action-RPG, one that absolutely shines on Vita’s OLED screen. It’s not only Vita’s prettiest game; it’s also a hell of a lot of fun to play. Immersive, stylish, and full of action, Muramasa Rebirth’s twin campaigns, multiple endings, hidden Demon Swords, massive exploration and other optional goodies are enough to keep you busy for a good long while. If you’ve never played Muramasa: The Demon Blade on the Wii, the Vita version is an excellent way to catch up.

Marvel Heroes feels schizophrenic, and unsure of what it wants to achieve. In trying to add components from the MMO genre, such as heavy instancing and daily quests, into a simplified ARPG, Gazillion has failed to recreate the exciting gameplay that can be found in either. There’s little of the engaging combat and compelling visual progression systems found in classic isometrics like Diablo and Baldur’s Gate, nor is there the scope and wealth of content that characterises major MMO games. Given the talent and license behind it, that’s a real shame.

Gunpoint is a refreshingly welcome addition to the burgeoning stealth genre. It nails player movement, puzzles, and storytelling in games, and completely removes anything that stands in the way of these three. Gunpoint is undeniably smart, and it takes the much-appreciated risk of assuming that we are, too.
