Even with its various random mutators, God Mode is likely to be a short-term co-op shooter. Being cheap but not free-to-play is also unlikely to help it in the long run. Still, these didn’t get in my way while playing, and if you keep in mind that this is a budget release when setting expectations of how many maps, guns, and customization options it should contain, there’s plenty of fast-paced action to be had gunning all the way through Hades – one weeping classicist at a time.

As a huge science-fiction nerd and a fan of shooters, I went in really wanting to like Defiance and its new universe. Thing is, it’s just not very good. Rare well-designed quests are overshadowed by a host of others that feel phoned in, and though the fundamentals of shooting are competent, weak enemy AI makes the PvE combat a bore. Respectable PvP combat goes a long way, but especially when the performance issues rear their ugly head, it's not far enough to make Defiance a recommendable experience.

Cities in Motion 2's more realistic approach may leave it looking a little drabber than its predecessor, but its focus on dynamic cities, timetables, and ticket prices in a contemporary city in real time make it a significant improvement over its predecessor. It's stuffed with graphs and important decisions that seemingly affect every pixel, and the exclusive focus on transportation systems allows for a greater sense of realism than you'd find in a more general city simulator. This is a micromanager's dream, but it lacks the smooth user interface needed to make all that information digestible, especially for newcomers.

There's elegance in ShootMania's simplicity, and it's great and refreshing to see some new ideas brought to a genre that's been largely abandoned by the big-name games. It does, however, lack personality and variety in weaponry, and feels overly targeted at the competitive gamer crowd, leaving little long-term appeal for everyone else.

Atelier Totori was a very good RPG to begin with, but its stylish, technically modest graphics, and focus on bite-sized quests make it an ideal candidate for handheld gaming. Everything that made the original what it is, for better or worse, is here on the Vita – including the near-constant interruptions by poorly executed dialogue which still bar it from greatness. But its additional content and small-screen visual presence make Atelier Totori Plus the definitive version, and an easy recommendation for franchise fans and RPG buffs in general.

BattleBlock Theater’s lack of focus keeps it from being a true XBLA great, but this platformer still kept a smile on my face from beginning to end. Extremely clever and inventive stage design, a well-honed difficulty curve, and wealth of extras and bonuses make it another winner for The Behemoth. Who knew keeping cats entertained could be so harrowing, and so fun?

Fans of golf history will love the new mode, but most gamers today probably prefer to play as teenage Tiger Woods instead of a lot of old white guys they've never heard of. While PGA Tour 14 might not be as exciting as the last couple of years' versions, it is a more technically proficient and streamlined game, giving you access to the more exciting features of the game. And for online golfers, the Country Clubs and Connected Tournaments are the best this series has ever had.

Though on the surface it looks like just another “me too” indie game seeking to ride the coattails of Minecraft’s success, Terraria expands on the familiar sandbox gameplay with a greater emphasis on combat and adventure that proves very satisfying. Fresh elements – like an absurdly expansive crafting system, a broad scope of monsters to battle, and a slick retro 2D presentation – make it a stand out among the pack. The console versions make subtle but welcome improvements over its PC predecessor in some areas, even though inventory management is definitely more fluid with a mouse and keyboard. Still, this experience is no less entrancing once you dig into it.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory completely submerges you in its woeful dialogue and barely lets you up for air. If it would just shut up for a bit, it might have a case as a respectable RPG adventure. Sadly, a decent combat system and a mildly amusing premise do not a good game make, and humble ambitions do little to excuse how poorly these characters, quests, and graphics are crafted.

Devil's Cartel feels like a hollowed-out version of previous Army of Two games. The distinctive edges have been sanded down, creating something that’s not just generic but unrelated to what went before. The humour has been drained and long-time fans might feel aggrieved by the decision to sideline Salem and Rios in favor of these lame characters. If you absolutely must experience the mediocrity first hand, Army of Two: Devil’s Cartel is still probably best played with a friend... but friends don't let friends play tedious mediocre games.

While there's no hiding the true age of Darkstalkers 3 and Night Warriors, the Darkstalkers Resurrection package serves them faithfully and backs them up with an impressively executed online experience. Fighting vets who prefer exacting mechanics will get more mileage out these games, but there's fun to be had here for beginners too, provided they aren't looking for 200+ hit combos that can be learned in 20 minutes. Ultimately, it's the memorable cast of misfit monsters that makes Resurrection so enjoyable, whether you grew up in the arcades with them or not.

Much like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, this is a textbook example of a fighting game port done properly. Dead or Alive 5 Plus is the genuine article, matching and occasionally surpassing its excellent console brethren in nearly every regard. It may not turn as many heads graphically, but it plays and performs just like the big boys, and for a version that fits neatly inside your pocket, you can't ask for much more than that.

As with all sandbox games the narrative is of your own making but this is even more true of Most Wanted. The side-effect is that it can feel aimless at times. If you desire structure, if you wanted a game to be meted out to you, you might find its instant freedom somewhat overwhelming. But Most Wanted is all about deviation and deviance. It’s the racing game for people who don’t tend to like racing games. You’re not punished for missing that apex or abandoning that nagging racing line. It’s undoubtedly one of the year’s most exhilarating experiences.

Going in, I had to question whether Infinite could live up to the BioShock name after having discarded its signature world of Rapture, with its Big Daddies and Little Sisters and warring philosophies, and starting from scratch. On the way out, I'm forced to seriously question which is the better game. In total, BioShock Infinite is a brilliant shooter that nudges the entire genre forward with innovations in both storytelling and gameplay. It trips over itself in a couple of spots, but not in any way that should keep you from embracing it with your utmost enthusiasm.
