The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is no second coming of Diablo II, but it's a fun, funny action-RPG with occasional glimmers of innovation. Sure, it's fairly derivative overall, simplistic compared to genre kingpins, and weak in the co-op department, but obvious care went into its craft. Miraculously miniscule price tag or not, Van Helsing is a damn (and probably damned) solid game.

State of Decay’s ambition reaches farther than most $60 titles, so its value is unquestionable as a $20 download – especially given how it manages to successfully meet so many of its lofty goals. I spent about 12 hours in this Zed-infested world, and while I saw most of what’s there, I could’ve spent a few more hours exploring. And since I focused on melee weapons the first time, I fully plan to start another game with a gun-centric character. Meanwhile, startup developer Undead Labs has already said that if State of Decay is successful, it hopes to follow it up with a massively multiplayer online sequel, codenamed “Class4.” But for now, Decay belongs in the pantheon of great modern zombie games alongside Valve’s Left 4 Dead series and Telltale’s Walking Dead episodes.

CastleStorm draws from a seemingly unmanageable array of inspirations including real-time strategy, tower defense, and Angry Birds, and does so with remarkable virtuosity and humor. Touchy ballista controls may mar the gameplay on occasion, but the charms of CastleStorm's multiple gameplay modes, varied campaigns and units, and quirky presentation keep the action on track.

Remember Me is a likeable, even admirable game that tells a deeply personal story in a thoughtfully-fashioned world populated by richly detailed character models. But ultimately, it failed to challenge or excite me as a game, as all of its best ideas are confined to its overarching fiction rather than its gameplay. I rarely felt like a Memory Hunter except for the few Memory Remix sections. I’d love to spend time in this world sampling its fiction and tasting some of its ideas, but unfortunately I can’t say the same for the game, which is very forgettable.

Sniper Elite V2's gratuitous X-Ray kill-cam adds a macabre elegance to every perfectly-timed shot you make, and that gives your careful handiwork an appealing artistic flair. While the ground combat and close-up encounters aren't as tight as you might expect from a common shooter, the sniper gameplay is front and center here, and it's delivered with top-notch class and authenticity. Unfortunately the absence of multiplayer and DLC options in the Wii U version neuters V2’s lifespan like a Karabiner round to the crotch, so if you value those and have the option to play elsewhere you’ll have a better experience.

The Swapper tempted me with ingenious puzzles, transported me to a fully realized science-fiction world, and made me ask questions about mortality and morality that few video games have ever dared to explore. Very few puzzle games have ever managed to marry impeccable challenges with a mature storytelling quite like this – there's no fluff or extraneous content here, only a prime example of how to create a tight, unforgettable gaming experience.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic still holds up, and remains a must-play for younger players who didn’t catch it the first time around. Though the iPad version's touch controls make movement clumsy, most of its changes are for the better. If you haven’t played it before, or want to experience it again, this is a great way to do it.

If you enjoyed the PS3 version of Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault and you have roughly 2GB of precious space to spare on your Vita, go ahead and download this since, hey, it’s free for you if you already own it for the PS3. But that's pretty much the only scenario that would warrant a download, because between the cut content and significant technical issues, the Vita version is a weaker experience in almost every respect and does nothing to improve what was only an okay game to begin with.

This is a loud, chaotic, and fun bit of extraordinary violence in an otherwise lighthearted world, but it rarely achieves the greatness it strives for. If you can overlook the tonal inconsistencies, Fuse’s shallow, familiar shooting can thrive. Success comes when the unacceptable teammate A.I. is replaced by a group of friends unleashing the awesome power of their alien-powered weaponry. Fuse is an all-or-nothing experience, though. Bring a full crew or don’t waste your time.

Last year’s Dirt Showdown never really knew what it was. Grid 2 does. Its continued shift away from its sim pedigree will still disappoint those of us who fondly recall the Race Driver games of old, but it still a great, modern package. A well-curated car list, a great sense of speed, and a well-thought out career mode combine in a racer that is a lot of fun to play through.

Awful driving physics, weak shooting, short, buggy missions, ugly tracks, and badly impersonated voice acting make Fast & Furious: Showdown the epitome of an insultingly terrible movie tie-in game. Send it to the impound lot and let’s never speak of it again.

Reus is a gorgeous-looking, imaginative game which suffers from over-baked mechanics, but those hungry for to play god are still likely to find one of their favourite Populous-style games in a long while. Finding the fun here means embracing a needlessly complex and unintuitive system of synergies and transmutations, and a high tolerance for repetition over the long haul, but those elements are at least backed up with plenty of personality and no shortage of challenge.

With its welcome return to classic-style horror action, Resident Evil: Revelations is very much worth playing in its HD form for its atmosphere and scares alone. However, if you’ve got the choice between the remake and the original, stick with the one you can carry in your pocket – this one feels a bit uncomfortable in its own skin.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a great port of an amazing game. The extra world is a worthwhile addition, and the new easy mode should allow even more people to enjoy the ride. While the 3DS’s version obviously doesn’t look quite as nice as the Wii’s, and the lower framerate is annoying, it’s just a hair short (an ape hair, perhaps) of being right up to par.

Dust 514 truly aims high with a one-of-a-kind cross-platform endeavor. But such ambition is in vain if you don't have a solid foundation, and Dust's crumbles almost from the get-go. Its wonky mechanics, weak graphics, and microtransaction fueled grind make it numbing to play long enough to explore its depth, and its persistent elements are completely lost on anyone who doesn't already have a foot down in the EVE universe. The ideas behind Dust 514 are clearly strong, but so too is the disappointment when they crumble under the weight of its free-to-play baggage.
