In other words, Empires is preaching to the converted, though series veterans certainly won’t be bothered by that news. It all depends what you’re after from a Warriors game: do you want more game modes and a focus on combat? Stick with Dynasty Warriors 7, or better still, the superb Warriors Orochi 3. If, however, you’re looking for a deeper strategic element to go with your hacking and slashing, Empires should fill that hole very nicely.

Crysis 3 is a polished iteration on the previous Crysis titles. Its campaign mode features some much needed soul beneath the sci-fi sheen, which gives a sense of purpose to all the killing that has been previously absent from the series. While its multiplayer mode isn’t quite strong enough to tear you away from the genre leaders for long, it at least provides enough of its own flavour to present a worthy alternative. It’s not quite a next generation experience come early, but it’s a superbly controlled, tightly paced and tactically flexible shooter with a satisfyingly focussed story, and an excellent way to tie up the Crysis series... for now.

March of the Eagles may have more limited ambitions than its grand strategy cousins, but in limiting its goals it makes its successes more evident. It's a relatively brief and accessible strategy experience that's good alone and better with friends. The smaller scale, lopsided balance, and multiplayer lobby screwups may keep it from being mentioned in the same breath as the biggest and best, but being a successful minor power in the pantheon of strategy games is still a fine achievement.

In some ways, Scribblenauts Unlimited is still running on the same awe-inspiring gimmicks the series introduced in 2009 but with the level of polish and refinement here, it’s finally delivering on all fronts. Despite some dips in overall puzzle difficulty this time around, the game has a massive amount of content to both discover and create from scratch. If you’ve skipped the series until now, start here. You’ll be floored at how much there is to show off. And if you’re the creative type, the Object Editor opens up endless possibilities. Scribblenauts Unlimited is an excellent game and having access to a full keyboard instead of a stylus to input words is quite liberating.

With more time, money, and effort, Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 could have been an entertaining, if basic brawler. You hear the mantra of “good concept, poor execution” with nearly absurd frequency these days. Ken's Rage 2 doesn't just exhibit poor execution, but poor understanding of what it's attempting to accomplish. Simple does not have to mean shallow, but that's precisely what it boils down to here. It truly is a sad day when you start with a character known for punching people so hard they spontaneously explode, and you manage to end up with something that's not only bad, but boring.

When a game comes out that tries to serve an underserved audience, you always want it to at least be decent. After all, if you're one of those game-starved fans, what are your options? But no matter how hungry you are for a way to sate your appetite for angling, Let's Fish will leave a bitter taste in your mouth. The obtuse menus and tutorials leave you in the dark about what little depth the game has, while sub-standard presentation keeps the entire experience completely charmless. Mix in the monotony of the core gameplay, and you get a game that's impossible to recommend, no matter how bad you want to hook some bass.

Aliens: Colonial Marines looks like Aliens, and sounds like Aliens, but unfortunately it just doesn’t feel like Aliens. In this world full of distractions, we could all probably use some help with our strained attention spans. Brain Age: Concentration Training is admirable and timely by taking up that task as the series’ new goal, and I could see this game actually making a difference for those who dedicate themselves to regular use of its activities. This sequel’s real challenge, though, is going to be keeping players’ attentions long enough to be able to improve them, as its restrictions on daily play time, occasional handwriting misrecognition and unnecessary demonic imagery are all obstacles that could cause trainees to set down the game and never return to it. If you think you’d have enough concentration to be able to endure those quirks, though, Concentration Training could very well help you overcome the many distractions in your life.

Proteus is a very different sort of interactive experience. Maybe, by your definition, it's not even a game. But that doesn't matter. It's a joyous experiment in exploration from start to finish – even if it is a very, very short-lived one. Are you tired of shooting terrorists and zombies all the time? Consider Proteus a much-needed vacation.

Naruto: Powerful Shippuden is a breath of fresh air for both longtime fans of the show and brawlers in general. It’s as interesting outside of its missions as in them, with unique experience-point investing and gambling mechanics that future games in this genre should look to for inspiration. And, in adapting the wacky Rock Lee spin-off instead of the core series itself, it finds a unique, previously untapped appeal, as these characters are often at their best when they focus on simple brawling.

The combat system and the world Visceral has crafted in Dead Space 3 is so expertly built and well-wrought, I found myself consciously overlooking my main criticisms, because I love playing it and spending time with it. This is an important distinction to make: loving a game while being fully aware of its faults. Dead Space 3, when played the way I've been playing it, on New Game+, is an engrossing and satisfying experience. But it requires ignoring the bad story and the numbing to-do lists. It then becomes all about building up the most powerful, best outfitted Isaac you can imagine. It’s here and here alone that Dead Space 3 succeeds, mostly in spite of itself.

Omerta's mix of management simulation and top-down turn-based combat in the style of XCOM brims with potential but it suffers from an almost total absence of risk or failure even on the hardest difficulty. There's charm and a good soundtrack in store here, but it quickly loses its appeal amid gameplay that never stops feeling as though you're working your way through a tutorial. At $40, that makes for an offer you should have no trouble refusing.

What’s perhaps most striking about playing a Sly Cooper game late in the PS3 generation is how it proves that the brand itself is still relevant, as is the mascot-based 3D platformer. While similar PlayStation series like Jak & Daxter and Ratchet & Clank have either disappeared entirely or gone in new and strange directions respectively, the fourth Sly Cooper game is true to itself. The decision to remain true to what made Sly great in the first place is daring in an age where the 3D platformer can come off as a dinosaur. Sure, Sly 4 has ridiculous load times, occasionally frustrating gameplay and some bizarre, archaic motion controls, but don’t let that deter you: Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is a worthy game to add to your library on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. It does so many things right and harkens back to a different time in gaming while modernizing the experience for a new generation. It may not wow you like some of the best PlayStation exclusives have in the past, but needless to say, the wait for a continuation of the Sly saga was officially worth it.

Antichamber has some of the more clever puzzles of any game I’ve played. It doesn’t have much in the way of personality, and its bizarre ending left me wondering why it was included at all, but it makes the act of exploration utterly thrilling. Each step becomes a chance to learn something new about Antichamber’s world, and you gain new skills and encounter unique and rewarding puzzles right up to the end. If you own a PC and can run an Unreal Engine 3 title, then you owe it to yourself to experience Antichamber. I wager you’ll get plenty of mental exercise and maybe learn a thing or two about life and have a blast while doing it.

Skulls’ hardcore appeal may be limited, but for those looking for a simple, easy to understand turn-based strategy title, it's really solid. You're not going to find a deep game you're going to play forever. In fact, there are definitely some glaring issues in the way that it plays. But you know what? That's just fine. There's a highly likeable campaign that's more than worth the price of admission.

I’m nearly 80 puzzles into Dokuro, and I’m still having a blast. In fact, it’s been hard to put down. I’m far from being the most talented puzzle gamer around, but Dokuro, no matter how difficult it can be at times, is rarely frustrating. Getting through each puzzle is a rewarding mixture of trial-and-error gameplay mixed with a little bit of luck, and watching the princess crouch down to pick the lone white flower at the end of each puzzle, signifying the completion of the task at hand, is a fitting reward for a job well done. Dokuro is another sign that the PlayStation Vita’s library is strengthening significantly as of late, and at $19.99, it’s an absolute steal. You should buy it, play it and enjoy the cerebral and thoughtful experience it provides.
