Going in, I had to question whether Infinite could live up to the BioShock name after having discarded its signature world of Rapture, with its Big Daddies and Little Sisters and warring philosophies, and starting from scratch. On the way out, I'm forced to seriously question which is the better game. In total, BioShock Infinite is a brilliant shooter that nudges the entire genre forward with innovations in both storytelling and gameplay. It trips over itself in a couple of spots, but not in any way that should keep you from embracing it with your utmost enthusiasm.

And that’s the long and short of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct – it could’ve been so much more. It has the actors from the show, it’s tied into a cool universe, and it mashes up Oregon Trail elements with a thinking man’s FPS. It just doesn’t do anything with this stuff. It’s a half-baked attempt at a game that can be fun in the occasional spooky part, but ends up under-delivering in every way.

Racing through Sonic Dash’s idyllic locales can be a lot of fun. Sonic rushes through the environment at an appropriately breakneck pace and the swipe controls actually manage to keep up. But the game plays it too safe – there is nothing here that hasn’t been done before. This combined with its pay-to-win leaderboard environment makes Sonic Dash an unexceptional experience.

Even if the difficulty skews toward the easy side, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 speeds up combat with more responsive controls, and the visual spectacle of it all is more stunning than ever. Just as importantly, maintaining critical emotional connections to the story, even amidst all the chaos and explosions, overrides my concerns about non-canon story choices and lets us have fun with "what if" scenarios. Ultimate Ninja Storm's reputation as Naruto's most consistently enjoyable game series is safe.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 isn’t bereft of good ideas or mechanics, it’s just that they’re all trapped in a short series of levels that rarely give you anything all that interesting to do with them. Combine that with some graphical glitches and the slow and ultimately forgettable multiplayer, and you have a mediocre game that all but the hardest of the hardcore sniper-wannabes should pass on.

Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is a good update of a great game that is starting to show its age, but it’s still very much worth your time and money. The monsters are stunning, the fights can be incomparably exhilarating, and the 3DS and Wii U connectivity is really impressive – even if the online infrastructure is still rather archaic. There’s just enough new stuff for Monster Hunter addicts to get into, and if you’ve never dived into this complex and rewarding series, this is the best opportunity yet.

In some ways I'd equate SimCity to an early version of Minecraft: a wonderfully creative toy attached to a barely functional game. The most important parts of something really cool are here already, and that's enough for me to recommend it to people with a tolerance for buggy but beautiful things. If you go in, do so with the understanding that you will almost certainly hit frustrating bugs like the ones I've mentioned, but the rewards can certainly be worth it. Of course, it should go without saying that if you're opposed to always-online games in general, you should sit this one out.

Still, this is a baseball sim that, to be as clear as BALCO ointment, plays very, very well. Hitting, fielding, and pitching (provided you opt for the Meter option) all feel great, and Road to the Show in particular is both difficult to put down and perfectly suited to the portable format, since each game takes 5 to 10 minutes to zip through. MLB 13: The Show on Vita is the Oakland A’s of video game baseball: they play in a crummy stadium (the Vita), but when you look past that, they’re pretty damn good.

The greatest shame with Mirror of Fate is that its heart is in the right place. As far as I can tell, MercurySteam did its absolute best to chart its own course with handheld Castlevania, one that borrows from the greatness that came before it, but without copying it outright. But in going off the beaten path, the studio ended up diluting what has made Castlevania so great in the last 15 years. Its emphasis on fragmented exploration and shallow leveling is the exact opposite of what Castlevania fans like myself love, want and have come to expect. Stranger yet is the fact that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow got what Castlevania was all about a lot more than many people gave it credit for. But that understanding hasn’t at all segued to the Nintendo 3DS version. I beat Mirror of Fate in just under nine hours with an 88% completion rating, and it wouldn’t take me more than an hour more to get it up to 100%. I simply don’t want to play anymore, which should tell you all you need to know. Because even the worst of the GBA/DS Castlevania games are more than worth seeing to statistical completion, but Mirror of Fate isn’t worth playing at all.

PlayStation gamers who are also baseball fans are a lucky lot. MLB 13: The Show is another winner in a series that’s easily the best baseball sim since EA’s since-shuttered MVP Baseball line. To be clear, MLB 13 suffers from the same feature crawl that many annual sports franchises do, meaning it’s largely similar to last year’s iteration with a player roster update. But the Road to the Show improvements, The Show Live mode, and the fielder’s throwing meter make this a worthy upgrade from MLB 12. The inevitable PlayStation 4 edition of this franchise next year will offer an exciting opportunity for Sony to do some serious innovation this excellent yet predictable series, but in the meantime, MLB 13 keeps The Show’s winning streak alive.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus isn't a bad action game by any means. In fact, at moments it can be wildly entertaining, but those moments come bundled with a terrible camera, uneven level design, and combat that tends to cheat you as often as it challenges you. Whether you loved Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 or not, this version's missing features and spotty performance are still impossible to ignore. Simply put, the original Sigma Plus is a better port of a better game, and far more worthy of your time and money.

The first three Etrian Odysseys are great dungeon crawlers, but with their high difficulty and monotony of purpose, they’re very much an acquired taste. Etrian IV matches its hardcore depth to appealing visuals and more inviting design, and in doing so allows the series to transcend niche status. Atlus has crafted a fantastic portable RPG, and the perfect entry point for Etrian newcomers.

Freemium games have to implement their business model in a way that doesn’t unbalance the gameplay, and they have to have gameplay high-quality enough to be worth everyone’s time to begin with. Real Racing 3 succeeds brilliantly on both counts. This is the best racing game available on mobile devices.

Tomb Raider is well-written, sympathetic, exciting, beautiful and just incredibly well-made. The single-player rarely makes a mis-step, and though Lara's quick transformation into a hardened killer seems at odds with the narrative at first, the game quickly moves past it. It is a superb action game that brings a new emotional dimension to one of gaming's most enduring icons, and repositions her alongside Nathan Drake at the top of gaming's action-hero heirarchy.
