Lilli’s cute flavor of insanity makes her an intriguing character to play as, but she can’t carry the plot of Harvey’s New Eyes alone. The rest of the cast is so underdeveloped, the environments you explore so banal and uninteresting looking, that it’s hard to appreciate Lilli’s character or the smart puzzle design. Daedelic’s on the right track with Edna and Harvey, but they still need a bit more time to rehearse before the studio can craft its masterpiece.

Doom 3 is a very good game, probably better than you remember. For PS3 owners who've never gotten any of this content, it's a particularly great deal. BFG Edition is a tough sell for the PC crowd, but console jockeys who missed it when it was the next big thing should dive on in. While several nagging issues can make it feel more like a rushed port rather than the definitive director's cut it should be, there's no denying that Doom 3 has improved with age.

Two years ago, Aksys was shocked by 999's success. This year, they shouldn't be shocked when VLR matches, then exceeds, its predecessor. This sequel is more twisted, more brutal and more memorable than that first volume, it's solidified Zero Escape as a series, and it's an experience I recommend to every gamer – if you're over 18, and if you've played 999 first. Virtue's Last Reward builds an unforgettable story on the dilemma of a choice: Will you ally, or will you betray? There is no choice, though, when it comes to whether or not you should buy. Do it. Buy now. There should be no timeline ever created that doesn't contain you playing this game.

Free-to-play games are great because of how accessible they are. Anyone can get in, try them out, and make a decision with little to no monetary investment. But in order to be a good free-to-play game, you also need depth to keep people coming back. Happy Wars went too far in the direction of accessibility with its few classes, lack of distinctive weaponry, and simple game modes. With very little reason to come back after a few quick rounds, I don’t foresee Happy Wars being a staple of the Xbox 360 multiplayer scene for very long.

Skylanders Giants improves the formula set out by the first game in a number of small but meaningful ways. The Giants are fun to play with and mix things up. The increased level cap and loads of new items and upgrades to buy make it fun to jump back in, as do the addition of new toys to collect. Only supporting two players and no online play still feel like misses, as does the inability to jump. The package, as a whole, doesn't push the genre or the Skylanders universe in radical ways, but the additions are welcome and ultimately great fun.

Last year Eurocom delivered GoldenEye: Reloaded, an HD remake which was arguably the best James Bond game since well, the original GoldenEye 64. Unfortunately the developer hasn't been able to maintain that trajectory with 007 Legends; an abhorrent 'tribute' to the history of the British super spy that doesn't just take liberties - it takes the piss. At a time when early reports suggest the celluloid Bond is reaching a new high with Skyfall, it's a shame that his video game counterpart has reached his digital downfall. If you're really dying for a Call of Duty-style shooter experience, then sit tight as Black Ops II has likely got more money than God behind it and it's only a month away.

There's plenty to like about Retro City Rampage from its nods to our childhoods to its easy to get behind gameplay to its arcade mini-games, but the story -- the main hook of the title -- just doesn't stand up. Player's quest is just an excuse to get to the next reference, the missions tend to be cheap, and checkpoints aren't forgiving.

Dance Central 3 continues to proves Harmonix is one of too-few developers that understands why Kinect can be special. The track list is varied and playful in a way that works with its terrific, tough story mode, and no matter how much time you spend banging your head against tutorial walls, your effort pays off in spades. The choreography here is complex, as well as diverse in genre, style, and energy – and nailing a routine feels incredible.

Handling aside, the biggest problem WRC 3 presents is that it doesn’t feel like it has any new ideas. From the rewind feature made famous by Codemasters’ racing efforts to the general lack of evolution for the series, it feels like a game made to satisfy licensor demands. It’s a bland and perfunctory experience, one that won’t offend anyone but is incapable of delighting anyone either.

If you've been reading this review and thinking, “This guy just doesn't 'get' Japan,” I implore you to reconsider -- not for the sake of my reputation, but for the sake of your wallet. This isn't about “anime bias”, nor is it about culture shock. We could all argue until we were blue in the face about how things that are taboo here are accepted there or how different their sense of humor is from ours. That isn't the point. I got every joke in Mugen Souls, I just didn't find any of them terribly funny. Whether your tastes align more with the East or the West, poor game design is still poor game design. If you're dying to throw your cash up on the altar to show your support for the localization of niche RPGs, go right ahead. Just remember: I told you so.

Sports games have moved on. New kits and boots aren’t enough to justify a full-price release. Despite adopting the same name, FIFA 13 on Vita is not at all consistent with the console version nor does it function as a satisfying companion game. Ultimately, it’s all frustrating if you own a Vita – the potential of the hardware is not being explored. FIFA 13 should be an essential purchase, a way to continue the same great game while on the move, but instead it’s a cynical cash-in. If you want to play FIFA on your Vita, the best option is to pick up FIFA Football from last year at half the price. IGN's rating system characterises anything between 4.0-4.9 as 'Bad', saying "Something went wrong during development and this egg went a little rotten. There's nothing worse than a game that ends up as "bad" on our scale, because it usually means there was some potential that the developer couldn't live up to." There's nothing inherently wrong with FIFA 13 on the Vita from a mechanical point of view. But something went wrong. EA has chosen not to get behind Sony's latest handheld. The potential of FIFA on a handheld certainly hasn't been realised.

XCOM is a great addition to the strategy genre, complete with an engaging campaign full of tension and challenges. The characters grow in satisfying ways, but the tactical game doesn't ever quite give players enough room to make the most of their abilities.

Playing Cortex Command breaks my heart. With online multiplayer, improved AI, more scenarios and a more fleshed out campaign it could be something truly great, but for now it’s just a number of cool ideas and great looks grafted onto noticeably repetitious level design and sub-optimal local multiplayer. Modding it can extend the enjoyment, but the most basic product you’re purchasing just fails to become anything more than a passing distraction.
