Should you get Worms Revolution? Well, if you’re a lapsed Worms player like myself, then absolutely. It’s the same classic Worms gameplay with (optional) gameplay tweaks and a lovely new coat of paint. If you’re a die-hard fan, then the classes add a new element to multiplayer competition, and make the customisation options even more robust. All told, this is a great game for a great price.

Bad Piggies is the best title Rovio has released yet, eclipsing Angry Birds Space. The open-ended puzzles work your brain while also allowing you to be creative. Thanks to Rovio’s infectiously amusing, cheerful style you’ll be smiling ear-to-ear watching your creations come to life regardless of whether you succeed or fail.

Evolution and ambition are only natural for a franchise as old as Resident Evil, as is the need to respect a long-lasting legacy and the fans that have come to appreciate it. But in trying to serve all masters, Resident Evil 6 loses focus and fails to accurately assess which of its elements are truly worthy of being included. When this game is at its height, it sets new standards for the series in every way. Unfortunately, there are no shortage of lows either, taking what could have been an excellent experience and making it something considerably lesser.

It’s both scary and exciting to think how good a game we might get if NBA 2K actually had a serious competitor pushing it to new heights. But even when left with a clear, unobstructed path to the basket, 2K13 throws down a monster jam with this year’s edition – probably the last one developed solely for this generation of consoles. It’s obviously the best hoops game out there, and it might even be the best sports game of all, period.

Dead or Alive 5 is, without any question, the best entry in the series. It retains its identity as a fast-paced, visually stunning 3D fighter, while shedding much of the baggage that's typically held it back. While there's still plenty of eye candy for both the ladies and gents, it's taken a back seat to what fighting games should be all about: fighting. It gives the casual fan a fighting experience that's as easy to grasp as it is exciting to watch, while providing more serious players the depth and features they need to stay interested. Give Dead or Alive 5 an honest chance, and you’ll find a formidable, enormously entertaining fighter that will keep you busy for a long time to come.

We may have been the last to get this, but PSN owners weren't really crying out for yet another tower defense game. Luckily, 11 Bit Studios has crafted something that feels markedly different from the already diverse offerings PlayStation 3 owners can choose from. The lack of online co-op stings given that it's 2012, but what's here is more than enough to justify the purchase price if you like your tower defense played (mostly) solo.

Torchlight II doesn’t do anything radically new, but does everything incredibly well. It fits all the pieces of varied monster behavior, interesting items, excellent skill design and random surprises together into a near-perfect formula, where the action never stops and rewards are never far away. Every level up, skill boost and item replacement flirts with a sense of invulnerability in a world obsessed with killing you, demanding continued play by teasing eventual omnipotence. The story and characters aren’t particularly memorable, but that hardly hurts the strength of Runic’s focused design in what’s one of the finest loot-driven action-RPGs available.

Many developers have attempted to reinvent the modern and classic platforming genre on buttonless touch screen devices to varying successes and failures, but Rayman Jungle Run's ingenious controls work perfectly. It's as much of a joy to play as it is to watch unfold, even with the occasional hiccup in stage design or balance issues.

So FIFA 13 is a refinement of a winning formula rather than an entirely new equation. While the gameplay changes are more subtle, they really consolidate upon the success and innovation of FIFA 12. But that success hasn’t bred laziness – there are new features, new services, even new leagues. If you’re a fan of the sport or FIFA in general, it’s hard to imagine a game that you’ll enjoy more this year.

Don’t be fooled by Final Fantasy Dimensions’ status as an iOS release - this is a full-length, full-fledged oldschool Final Fantasy through and through. The simplistic episodic storyline is disappointing, but the very fun and very deep job system, lengthy quest and rewarding boss fights still make Dimensions an excellent throwback RPG.

While Formula One is a racing sport, F1 2012 is far more than just a racing game. Equal parts simulation and re-creation of the real world events, Codemasters Birmingham has done a magnificent job of capturing the precision of the vehicles and the excitement of individual events. It's a title that demands skill and tactics over thoughtless speeding, and as such will likely lose the interest of less committed players. For those willing to play by the rules, there’s an amazing wealth of content to be found here – easily Codemasters’ finest Formula One outing.

Borderlands 2 preserves the best parts of the franchise while also making numerous, much needed improvements to areas like narrative and class skill design. Additional visual customization options would make it better, and the occasional technical issue takes away from the experience, but overall this is an excellent shooter no one even remotely curious should overlook. Prepare to level. Prepare to loot. Prepare to get lost in the hilarious, bizarre and wonderful world of Pandora.

Faster Than Light is an immensely rewarding experience for a mere $10.00, and while the playthroughs theoretically clock in at two hours or so, the difficulty is such that you might spend five or more hours with it before you finally beat it. It may look and sound like a game from years past, but it demonstrates that the Roguelike genre still has plenty to offer almost 30 years after its first appearance. FTL’s situations lack some variety and the randomness of the game as a whole can be frustrating, but it largely makes up for these flaws through its intense combat and intuitive and deep micromanagement options.

My expectations for Tokyo Jungle weren’t high, but when I started playing, I quickly realized a marked error in my preliminary judgment. Tokyo Jungle might be bizarre, different and even a little bit whacky, but it’s also a lot of fun. It’s a truly different game; you’ve never played anything like it. And in a gaming industry full of the same old thing, this very fact should intrigue you. The icing on the cake? The fact that it’s a damn good experience with incredible depth and replay value.

LittleBigPlanet PS Vita is the definitive LittleBigPlanet game. It's everything you loved (or possibly didn't) from the past games boiled down into a package you can play anywhere at any time. You can collect prize bubbles while watching TV, download user-created levels at home and then play them on a plane, and sink the hours into learning create mode via 10-minute chunks at the Laundromat. Then, there's all the new stuff like touch controls, games that don't involve Sackboy, and the creation potential that could give you an endless supply of free games. Yes, the jumping is still floaty, the creation complicated and the load times a bit too long, but that doesn't stop LittleBigPlanet PS Vita from being an amazing experience.
