We’ve known about Dyad for a long time – it’s been in development for several years -- but it still somehow flew under my radar as far as something that really compelled me to play it. But when I started playing Dyad, everything changed. This PSN exclusive offers something unique and fun to the PlayStation audience, and it’s a game I truly think that a wide variety of gamers with an even wider variety of genre preferences can enjoy. Don’t be intimidated by what appears to be a high level of entry. Give Dyad a try and get sucked into it just like I did.

NCAA Football 13 is a great game -- the changes to the core engine are welcome, challenging and exciting -- but the little stuff adds up. Similar modes, audio inaccuracies and visual missteps make a game that's better than last year's on the technical level but lesser as an overall product.

Endless Space is smart, polished and intelligent game of countless permutations. Its strength lies in how carefully and how cleverly it's balanced, as well as how it rewards all kinds of playing styles. We haven't seen a strategy game quite like this in a while.

High-speed thrills hit the wall too soon in the punishing campaign, and despite a solid range of multiplayer, quick race, and time-trial options, progressing through the three distinct eras to unlock all the tracks and sweet rides is a big part of the fun that gets trampled by the clumsy execution.

The visuals aren't stunning, the story isn't crazy exciting, and the missions get repetitive. But The Amazing Spider-Man is fun to play. Webbing bad guys, finding comics and swinging through the streets of Manhattan entertain, and even though I had the story and most side missions polished off in a little more than 10 hours, I'm still donning the red and blue for web-slinging fun. The Amazing Spider-Man isn't a great game, but it can be a great time.

By and large, remakes and reissues for the Wii rarely feel like essential purchases, but we're prepared to make an exception in the case of Project Zero 2. Apart from being one of the most compelling survival horror games of the past decade, there's no getting away from the fact that it still feels as fresh and unique as it did almost a decade ago. And with its thrilling brand of ghost-busting combat making a perfect transition to the Wii, this is an enduring classic that every horror fan should have in their collection.

Few of its events will hold up too well in the long term, but that’s not really what an Olympics game is all about. It’s a chance to get caught up in the spirit and pageantry of the occasion while enjoying some friendly competition both on and offline. In which case, London 2012 holds up its end of the bargain pretty well. There’s nothing life-changing about it, but if you’re looking for a compendium of sporting activities that will keep you entertained until the real thing arrives, you could – and previous years are conclusive proof of this - do an awful lot worse.

Spec Ops isn’t about a war, protecting the world, or defeating some evil threat -- it’s about you, the effects of your actions, and events that are out of your control. The sum of Spec Ops’ unexpected story is an army shooter that makes killing people mean something. This, along with its thoughtful aesthetic and intelligent enemy encounters, defies the standard established by low-aiming action games. Multiplayer can’t muster up the same courage, though, and while the hollow online experience doesn’t detract from the single-player campaign’s accomplishments, its reliance on convention doesn’t do anything to elevate it.

So, what adjective would properly sum up The Amazing Spider-Man? Good. Because this is a generally good experience, and a fun one most of the time, but its issues keep it from truly ascending to the heights of being Spectacular. Or Sensational. Or Astonishing. Give the free eShop demo a try before you buy – and if you can handle the 3D and don't mind some handholding-while-Web Rushing, head down to the game store and pick up the full package.

Magic: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is easily Stainless Games’ best effort at providing an accessible yet challenging version of Magic to date, and the new decks and improved gameplay are satisfying enough to trump most concerns arising from the new Planechaser mode. Longtime fans will likely bristle at the continued absence of fully customizable decks, but Duels 2013 includes an impressive array of cards that complement this series’ comparatively accessible design. And if you’re worried about the ten dollar price tag for a game that’s arguably just a polished version of last year’s release with a different multiplayer mode, consider this: If you’re a real magic fan, you’ll probably spend more than that on booster packs every month.

Virtua Fighter 5 is the fighting game fan’s fighter. There are no frills or a fancy art style to mask lesser gameplay. It’s a brawler, pure and simple. However, the more you put into it, the more you practice, the more it gives back, giving it an immensely rewarding quality that can only be found in truly great competitive online games.

For brief, glimmering moments near the end of a stage, when using a Move controller, Babel Rising is a decent game with average visuals. The rest of the time, it's an entirely ho-hum riff on tower defense despite its clever inversion of the Lemmings formula. What's more, it goes from ho-hum to below average with a controller, and from below average to atrocious with Kinect. The campaign is clearable in a couple of hours, leaving you with nothing but an endless mode and some limited multiplayer to extend the life of your purchase. But even at $9.99, Babel Rising isn't terribly worth purchasing in the first place.

Quantum Conundrum's inventive puzzles put your brain to satisfying work. Everything surrounding the challenges feels a little empty and could use some of the rest of the game’s ingenuity. But a disappointing ending and lack of visual detail shouldn't keep you from the thrill of inter-dimensional puzzle solving. The foundation has been laid, and I hope to be cracking many more Quantum Conundrums in the future.

It’s not hard to see why the Ratchet & Clank games were such a hit during the PS2’s life. Their focus on combat and creative weaponry was a great gameplay foundation, but it was all the additional touches that helped make them special. The gadgets, puzzles, platforming, mini-games, exotic locations, art direction and sense of humour. Oh, and let’s not forget the bolts. Those magical, jangly bolts.
