Whether you're a strategy fan that hasn't been introduced to the delights of Disgaea or a series veteran that already played the third offering on the PS3, Disgaea 3 is highly recommended on Vita. The nature of the system makes for more forgiving ventures into the depths of the game's item worlds and the pixel art may be easier to forgive on the smaller screen. Platform aside, this was already an excellent turn-based strategy game that, although too heavy on frivolous exposition, can be explored and enjoyed from here to eternity.

Trials has cleverly adapted to its environment and become even more of an everyman's game. It's still incredibly challenging, but the hill to the hardest levels is less steep. The thrills are more thrilling. Track sharing and multiplayer make it more communal. Rarely have I played a game that better caters to all walks of players.

Even given the irresistible pull of the narrative, Pandora's Tower isn't quite up to the standard of other recent Wii RPGs. Yet if at times it seems ugly, confused and repetitive, at others it's creative, gripping and wonderfully atmospheric. Ganbarion's game may be no classic, but like Nier, this is rich enough in ideas and narrative force to potentially become something of a cult favourite in years to come.

When the 3DS first launched, the included AR games were easily the software highlight, and since then we've been eager to see the concept returned to and expanded upon. Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir had the opportunity to do just that. Unfortunately, while the game has great atmosphere and plenty of potential, the three hour campaign lacks any real depth and is rather inconvenient to play. It’s too bad, because with a longer campaign and more content, Spirit Camera could have been a revolutionary experience. As is, it fails to go much farther than Face Raiders did - and that was free.

In every significant way, The Witcher 2 on Xbox 360 is the same subversive and compelling fantasy that it was on the PC. There are some minor technical and graphical blemishes, but they don’t detract from what is one of the best RPGs of recent years, and the extra content adds value. This is an ambitious and absorbing game that’s not just superficially “adult”, but genuinely mature.

Underneath its gorgeous sheen and striking atmosphere, Legend of Grimrock is an unapologetic nod to PC gaming's earlier days. Playing it reawakens those same feelings of excitement I had back when I got into early dungeon crawler RPGs for the first time. There's something magical about the skillful way the dev team takes such antiquated game design and makes it feel new and fun again, pushing all the right nostalgia buttons in the process. But more importantly, everything about this well-crafted romp through deadly dungeons comes together to pull you into its mysterious realm and hold on.

The Splatters is a fun and addictive take on the physics puzzle genre, and one that brings something new and unique to the genre. While the whole of the experience isn't very long and there are a few frustrating control issues here and there, it's still an engaging experience with plenty to draw fans of the genre looking to get their hands dirty.

While light on content, the core play in Skullgirls works beautifully on numerous levels. Astounding animation dresses up its solid basics and the roster provides plenty of possibilities for strategies and play styles. And for those looking for real competition, both local and online multiplayer run smoothly. One can only hope that Skullgirls meets a warm reception from the fighting game community and prospers in the years to come.

It’s a game that Warriors aficionados will get the most out of, then, but as well as offering amazing fan service, this also represents the ideal entry point for new players. If you only play a single Warriors game, with such an abundance of content, Warriors Orochi 3 has to be the one. And for those who’ve played the rest, be assured that you’re about to experience the best – because this is a new peak for Omega Force and for the Warriors series.

The messy clash of themes, gameplay, and controls in Diabolical Pitch undoes everything. Brief bursts of entertainment occur only early on, and they’re almost exclusively a result of the self-aware absurdity in Grasshopper Manufacture’s presentation. The unchanging whack-a-mole structure holds back any potential Diabolical Pitch had, which is a real shame. This had all the makings of an unforgettable experience, but will most likely fade into obscurity. Also, why bother creating a physically involving Kinect experience if Diabolical Pitch is going to keep cutting the player out of it? Grasshopper Manufacture knows what makes a fun game, but not a great Kinect title.

Even so, Rhythm Thief is well worth persevering with. It’s a game with a song in its heart and romance in its soul, a sweet-natured slice of old-fashioned escapism underpinned by taut and satisfying rhythm-action systems. If a hopeful tilt at a sequel in its closing moments seems rather naively optimistic, you can hardly blame SEGA for dreaming. After all, it would be a crime bigger than any of Phantom R’s thefts if his story were to be forgotten.

Xenoblade Chronicles is the best Japanese RPG of this generation. The fact that it looks like it's from the last generation is its only drawback, but its technical limitations are offset by imaginative artistic direction, innovative and compelling combat, and thoughtful design. It's a throwback to the glory days of the genre, proof that there are always new ways to tell a story. If you've ever felt neglected by the lack of in-depth gaming epics on the Wii, you owe it to yourself to buy this.

The Devil May Cry HD Collection’s best assets are its price and the sheer quantity of content. But as years have gone by, the camera stands out as a sore spot on this iconic action series. The combat, difficulty, and highly-critical rating system make it an exciting piece of gaming history and worth checking out if you missed it the first time around. You may break a few controllers in frustration, but so did everyone else a decade ago.

Bugbear has traditionally developed cult hits, so it's great to see the studio given the opportunity to work with a major franchise. Unbounded may not have much to do with the things that defined Ridge Racer, but if you can get over that, you'll discover an energetic, entertaining racer, with gratifyingly destructive environments, challenging gameplay and interesting online. Ridge Racer was due for a reboot, and here it is.

A year from now Gettysburg: Armored Warfare could and likely will be a totally different game. But right now this unfinished piece of software isn’t worth any amount of money. This intriguing and silly premise hasn’t gone far beyond the concept phase, and no matter how low your expectations are it’ll be hard not to be disappointed with Gettysburg.
