Rage proves a lot of what we already knew about id Software. The studio knows how to make great shooters and deliver incredible visuals and animations. With some of the elements we’re not as familiar with in id games like an emphasis on story, Rage isn’t as strong. The great controls and useful weapon upgrades help make Rage’s shooting parts a lot of fun, but the storyline fails to create any real tension and the game’s characters, friendly and hostile, never do or say anything memorable. As a result, Rage starts to drag toward the second half after most of the mechanics and upgrades are introduced because the fictional world isn’t very interesting. Despite the lack of genuinely exciting context, all the content packed into Rage is still a blast to play, including the surprisingly entertaining car combat mode and co-operative challenges. Rage isn’t revolutionary, but is an expertly crafted, beautiful shooter.

Eufloria is an interesting, and often enjoyable game that could have been so much more. It's evocative visuals and haunting soundtrack make it a true sensory delight and the design concept behind it -- a mellow, minimalist RTS with an arboreal motif -- is inspired stuff. That's why its shortcomings, including abundant downtime and no multiplayer support, feel so frustrating.

That this is the definitive version of NBA Jam is undeniable: it plays better, looks better and lasts better than any of the previous games in the series' history. The fact that it's a mere $14.99 USD only makes it an even more irresistible proposition – you couldn't get more bang for your bucks outside of a halftime fireworks show in Milwaukee. Just how On Fire is it? To return to the analogy that opened this review: this Jam is so hot that if you were to spread it on bread it would turn it into toast. Buy it.

While the game was billed as an “action-RPG”, calling it that would be a gross overstatement. Sure, it satisfies a few terms of similarity, but even with an upgrade system thrown in and some hidden collectibles, this is very much a straightforward action game with extremely light RPG features (not much more than you’d find in, say, God of War). Even for an action brawler, this one is as mindless as they come.

FIFA 3DS is a surprisingly rich title for a handheld console. It’s perfect for a quick game on tiresome commutes. The career mode lacks the some of the depth required to keep you engaged for longer gaming sessions. Its visuals are impressive, and it tries its best to take advantage of the 3DS unique features. The Pro camera position in 3D, in particular, puts you right in the centre of a football match, and can’t be replicated in quite the same way on any other console.

The reviewer's job is difficult when it comes to a game like Dark Souls. I simply can't unreservedly recommend that you buy it. It's not a game that you play to relax. It doesn't care in the slightest about whether you're enjoying yourself, and it doesn't give a fig for your notions of entertainment or your mental well-being. If you just play games for fun, this isn't for you, and no amount of insistence on my part is going to change that. But if you're interested in the limits of the videogame form – to see just how focused, how pure and how uncompromising in its vision a game can be – Dark Souls is unmissable. If you take the time get into Dark Souls' mindset, to begin to understand the twisted way in which it operates and taste the rewards behind its cruellest challenges, this is one of the most thrilling, most fascinating and most completely absorbing experiences in gaming. No sports game has ever made me this excited to play. Seriously it's all I've been able to think about for the last week. The realistic, challenging, gorgeously animated gameplay carries across a cornucopia of modes. Playing legends of the past, the stars of today, and my own personal NBA rookie are all different flavors of f#$%ing rad. Any one of these modes would be reason enough to purchase the game, but all of them together make for a game that any basketball fan has to pick up.

FIFA on the Wii is a perfectly passable football game, if somewhat insubstantial. It pales in comparison with its console peers, but then most games would. It’s caught between the aspiration of being a realistic football sim and the frankly more fun ambition of being an escapist football fantasy where you can score 40-yard wonder goals with ease.

There have been many 2D Castlevania games in recent years and they're all rather similar, so I applaud developer Konami for trying something new. Harmony of Despair is quite enjoyable when you have a posse backing you up. But I'd have to say this Castlevania experiment is only a modest success and there is definitely room for improvement. The focus on multiplayer came at the cost of the single-player experience. With so little of the game explained, some players may find themselves confused or, worse, frustrated. And because assets seem to have been plucked straight from previous games, that $15 price tag is questionable. But, Castlevania fans will definitely have fun with Harmony of Despair. It's basically a six-player time attack mode with all your favorite characters, and there isn't anything else quite like it on PlayStation Network. If Konami ironed out the kinks, a follow-up to this could be really great.

By offering some solid graphical upgrades to bring the collection up to par with the current gen a la Halo Anniversary, Ubisoft could’ve offered Splinter Cell fans a great look at the series’ roots. Unfortunately, we’ve instead been treated to a slapdash production with lousy visuals and no multiplayer.

Solatorobo is slow to get going, and neither the combat nor the puzzles are ever anything more than mildly challenging. But it's a true original, beautiful to look at, lovingly made, characterful and always ready to surprise you with some mad, bizarre new idea. In a world where almost every game is something we've seen before, there's a lot to love about it.

Blocks That Matter is an intriguing action puzzler that is as cute as it is challenging. While the campaign probably won't take you more than five or six hours to get through (and a lot less than that if you know what you're doing), the bonus levels and community levels will keep you entertained as long as you wish.

Rochard is a great game to sit down with over a weekend. It took me about six and a half hours to get through, and I enjoyed the overall experience. It’s certainly not a game without its issues, but it’s still a great title, and at $10, it’s also a total steal. Rochard isn’t only a one-off experience, either. There’s reason to go back for more. Collectibles and upgrades are strewn around that are easy to miss if you aren’t paying careful attention, and then there’s that pesky Gold Trophy that will require you to beat the game in three hours or less. But save the speed-running for a second playthrough. Enjoy Rochard as it was intended, and let it bend your mind a bit. You won’t be sorry you did.

Simply put, whether or not you enjoy Innocent Sin will come down to your level of patience with random monster encounters and load times. As much of an RPG masterpiece as I believe it to be, there is no ignoring the effects its age and technical shortcomings have on the overall experience. If you're the kind of person who thinks random encounters are like nails on a chalkboard, it's hard to recommend Innocent Sin. But if random battles and dated visuals are not issues for you, it's hard to recommend it enough.

Thankfully, FIFA 12 has not innovated simply for the sake of it. The gameplay innovations greatly improve the way FIFA plays. Matches unfold with a more authentic tempo, taking it much closer to the real thing. Revolution? Evolution? Who really cares. More importantly, is FIFA 12 the best football game in the world? I don't think so. But I'd put it in my top one.
