For the longtime fans, this is what you like (though even fans should be disappointed at the lack of variety in Gundam 3). There are online co-op missions and a long single-player campaign with hundreds of characters and mechs to upgrade. New gamers, however, should expect more from a video game these days. Gundam 3 feels and looks dated. It can't stack up against other action games, even ones published by the same company.

Anyone hoping for an arcade football experience won’t find what they’re looking for here; this is no NFL Blitz. Backbreaker Vengeance provides a few rounds of fun, but the control problems, price point, and lack of variety and real football stand as glaring indicators that this experience probably should have stayed on a mobile platform.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior on PS3 is even more disappointing than its sister releases last year. The feeling of missed potential and lack of polish is sharper given the additional year of development time. It looks and runs worse, and fails to address the hyper-linear level design that doomed the original release to the bargain bin. It’s the rare example of a definitive version that only brings into sharper focus why the original failed.

I liked Back to the Future: The Game, but I didn't love it and that sucks. The first two episodes had me hooked but the next three lost me as they got more and more crazy. I have no problem with a developer trying new things and taking franchises to new places, but starting off serious and ending goofy left me unimpressed. Back to the Future: The Game is good and an enjoyable journey, but it's not without issues.

There are a few other dual-stick shooters in the PlayStation Store, but Gatling Gears is one of the best. It doesn't have much in the way of new ammunition -- this is essentially a 1985 arcade game with the modern conveniences provided by the PlayStation Network. But it is a joy to play. The intricately detailed environments make for a world you actually want to save. And if that hippy crap doesn't cut it for you, know that mowing down hordes of tiny men in what is essentially an AT-ST from Star Wars is just as satisfying as it sounds.

Alien Zombie Megadeath is one of those surprising games that I never intended to purchase, but nonetheless really enjoy. A boredom-induced Sunday encouraged me to download it off of the PlayStation Network, and I am totally happy that I did. This isn’t a game that will impress you with its presentation, graphical flair or audio (after all, the team that made it only consists of three people). But what will impress you is its addictive gameplay, and all of the ways the title convinces you to come back for more. And at $7.99, it’s a total steal, especially when you consider how over-priced so many downloadable games are today.

Planeswalkers 2012 strikes a big chord with my inner Magic nerd. If you're thirsting for another major round of card-battling wizardry, then the extra cards, fresh play options, and new presentation make it worth diving into this remix. The gameplay is as tight as ever, though when it comes to deck-building and card selection, there's still a lot of room for the series to grow before it reaches the same level of meticulous depth found in the tabletop game it's based on. Regardless, this edition shows vast improvement.

Cars 2 is a great multiplayer game that rivals Mario Kart. Playing alone isn’t quite as fun, but it’s still a solid solo experience. The fact that there’s little story doesn’t really matter because you won’t miss it, and don’t let the license scare you off. Under all the Pixar beauty is an extremely fun game.

For the already-converted, Labyrinth of Lost Souls is a more than solid dungeon crawler. Its fulsome selection of side-quests, items, and expansive dungeons could keep you exploring for many hours, making it excellent value. But it's hard to imagine it winning over the unconvinced or the uninitiated. At times, it seems wilfully obscure and unaccommodating, as if it doesn't want you to understand its esoteric ways: "This isn't for you; now, move along." But after time, you realise it's not hostile at all; it just expects a high degree of genre competence from you. Flatteringly, it assumes that before you enter the first dungeon you'll have bought a map (or have a sharp pencil to hand); that INT, PIE, LUC, VIT form a part of your active vocabulary; and that you're not impressed by immediate reward, but the deferred pleasures that come from spending hours accumulating XP in the dark and fastidiously tweaking your team’s stats and inventory. If that’s not you, then it’s hard to see how Wizardy: Labyrinth of Lost Souls will entertain rather than frustrate or perplex.

There is absolutely no reason to buy this game. The only potential reason would be if you somehow don't have a single Wii Motion Plus controller. Then again, I already gave you four better options to solve that problem. Move along.

I’m still scratching my head at the reasoning behind taking the DS Cars 2 in a completely different direction than the consoles. The fun multiplayer design featured on the consoles makes sense for the property and offers up an experience that rivals Mario Kart. Even if multiplayer was never an option, it still would have been more fun to drive around blasting opponents with weapons than sneaking from one end of a level to the other.

There are alternative costumes to unlock, the comic cutscenes are interesting, and I like the interpretation of Hal Jordan, but Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters is just a bad game thanks to the slow gameplay.

Wipeout In the Zone is far from perfect, but it's fun. When I was laughing at my replays or mocking a friend's fail, the little stuff didn't matter. If you have a Kinect and are looking for a game that's offering good times, look no further but don't expect an instant classic. This is a simple game you can just jump into and have a laugh -- in between deep, wheezing breaths.

I really like F.E.A.R. 3. While it’s an experience that’s far from flawless, it’s one of those games that still gives you a lot of bang for your buck. And that’s perhaps what impresses me most. Sure, there are better shooters on the market in terms of gameplay, setting and story, but very few of them give you so many reasons to keep coming back. From the single-player campaign that can be played through twice with two different characters to the co-op campaign that you can play through with a friend locally or online to an incredibly thoughtful multiplayer offering, F.E.A.R. 3 has a lot going for it. Whether you’re looking for a new, solid shooter to play or something set in a unique, horror-filled atmosphere, F.E.A.R. 3 has something for you. You won’t find the be-all, end-all shooter experience with F.E.A.R. 3, but you’re still bound to have a lot of fun.

This is the inherent conundrum of Shadows of the Damned. Your own tastes will determine whether it's more or less than the sum of its basically functional but not-especially-interesting parts, and the attitude and style it carries like a chip on its shoulder. As an action game, Shadows of the Damned is a passable exercise in a few interesting ideas often buckling under the weight of controls and level design stuck firmly in the past. But as a weird tour through a Hell we haven't seen before, with a love for subject matter that neatly sidesteps the likes of other Grindhouse-inspired games over the last few years, Shadows of the Damned is an experience that's worth having... for a particular audience.

Obsidian Entertainment's take on the Dungeon Siege franchise has some merit. The core combat system is well-designed, offering a small but useful set of abilities for each character class. The varied enemy encounters encourage the frequent use of abilities and the dodge mechanic, which makes the basic gameplay – whittling down the health bars of enemies – satisfying. But the rest of the game mostly falters, unfortunately, to a degree that overshadows its achievements. Dungeon Siege III is a dungeon crawler with a boring loot table, poorly implemented multiplayer, and little lasting incentive to continue running around the world once the tedious story ends.
