Skate It is a fresh idea that just does not pan out. The controls have a steep learning curve. They may offer greater control over your skater so he doesn’t feel like a puppet, but they take way too long to get comfortable with the set-up. And even when you do get the swiping system, it still sometimes fails to respond. Couple that with some downright bad visuals and you have a game with potential but undercooked execution. I’d certainly be willing to check out a Skate It 2 in the future, though.

Nier is ugly and it can get really repetitive, forcing players to backtrack multiple times across familiar locations. But for every frustration I encountered in Nier, there were surprising gameplay twists, unsettling aesthetics and intriguing characters to meet. The ideas that Nier was built on are extremely solid -- the execution just falls short. If you're still the type to rent or borrow a game and you have a free weekend, you can get through Nier in about 20 hours or so. I'd say it's worth it, despite the game's faults -- especially when you consider the endearing cast contained within.

Xbox Live Arcade is a great place for retro shooters, but if they aren't great examples of what the genre is capable of they're likely to get lost in the mix. I suspect that is what will happen to RayStorm HD, a solid shooter that will get some attention for its nostalgia factor but is ultimately a pretty generic effort.

Iron Man 2 has some good ideas – the custom loadouts, the different armors, and Cheadle and Jackson providing voices – but they don’t pan out. In the end, this is an uninspired brawl from one mission to the next. You don’t need to worry about much, the game isn’t that hard, and it’ll be over before you know it.

I don’t think Lead and Gold is going to replace Team Fortress 2 for any of the fans out there. There’s just not a lot in the game, but what is there is fun, stylish, and cool. If you’re more of a casual multiplayer gamer like I am, then Lead and Gold is neat game. Just don’t expect to be playing it for months on end.

Record of Agarest War is a traditional strategy RPG that has a few nice perks but stumbles enough to keep it from greatness. It's being marketed as an erotic SRPG, but in reality it's actually very tame. A little cleavage is all you're going to see here. I would rather it have gone more over-the-top with its sexuality, as that would have made it a more unique experience. But if you're a fan of the genre, Agarest War will provide a very long adventure that spans generations.

Dementium II is a straightforward horror-focused adventure that's certainly a step up from the original Dementium: The Ward, but never quite reaches what the team has already done in its less gory, but similarly mature Moon. It definitely fuels the craving for more first-person action games on the Nintendo DS, and at the very least Renegade Kid continues to show how capable the team is with the handheld hardware. The six-year old system clearly still has what it takes to drive fun FPS designs.

Despite a disappointing shift in visual style, Picross 3D is another enjoyable and habit-forming puzzle game that is perfect for the DS. It's very satisfying to reveal each stage's hidden object and you'll find yourself returning to many puzzles in order to get a perfect rating. If you're looking for your next DS addiction, this is a good pick.

Kick-Ass is a poor beat-‘em-up that feels rushed at every turn. It’s certainly better than the iPhone version which I had the great misfortune of playing earlier this week, but that was the lowest of hurdles. The action is incredibly repetitious and unoriginal, even if you choose different characters. The pacing is all over the place. The technical issues with the camera and slowdown are bizarre. There are way too many good PSN downloads to grab instead of wasting your time and money on this.

2010 FIFA World Cup is a passable effort that fanatical soccer fans will want to pick up for their next road trip. There’s a good amount of content under the hood, but I would have liked to see some seriously refined gameplay, new mechanics and a few features that helped to differentiate this latest FIFA iteration on PSP from its big brothers on consoles. As it stands, this one just isn’t up to spec.

Trauma Team's greatest moments emerge in the surgery and first response chapters, because they're fast-paced, thrilling and they require a fair amount of skill and speed to complete (especially if you're going for a high ranking). I also enjoyed the forensics sections -- even if they were occasionally unintuitive -- because they presented intriguing scenarios and a few cool puzzles. Unfortunately, the diagnosis and endoscopy chapters leave something to be desired, making Trauma Team something of a mixed bag. Nothing in this medical drama is unplayable, but it's still disappointing that the rest of the game couldn't live up to the exhilarating potential of virtually performing surgery. That said, I enjoyed Trauma Team, despite the issues. But maybe I just really like saving lives.
