If Naval Assault had been a downloadable Xbox Live Arcade title, it would have been easy to forgive a lot of its shortcomings. Unfortunately, it’s not; it looks like a last-gen game, with some of the worst sound design and music I’ve seen in a retail release, no mid-mission checkpoints, and most importantly, not much to hold one's interest for more than a few fleeting moments. You might be tempted to pick it up for some online combat, but buyer beware -- I’m pretty sure this ship sank before even making it out of the harbor.

Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip is an impressive game; there’s no doubt about it. The title packs the lighthearted gameplay we know and love with tried and true time sinks such as collectables, unlockable characters, personal ranks and more. I don’t think it has the addictive hook of previous Hot Shots games, but it’s still an awesome title in its own right.

But that's pretty much that -- this is a simple, very straightforward, very limited piece of software just trying to emulate the appeal of a Hudson novelty device that never crossed the ocean to us in the States. There are a couple of extra unlockable features included, and you can also use it as a stopwatch -- but it's still only interesting for a few minutes or so. If you or a friend has always held some personal pride about your rapid-fire button-pressing skills, it might be worthwhile for you to drop a couple bucks on this download -- but, even then, I'd probably recommend hitting an import shop and grabbing one of the actual Japanese units instead (there was a new production run just a couple of years ago). For everyone else, an easy skip. Sorry Takahashi.

While it’s certainly not in the upper echelons of sports titles, International Cricket 2010 does deliver a more consistent experience out in the middle than its Ashes-branded predecessor, and its action cam does a good job of drawing you into the game – even if it does introduce a few new problems of its own. It has to be said that while the AI is indeed smarter than last year – proactively adjusting its scoring rates with the bat or bowling lines with the ball – this is a game at its best when played against a few mates on the couch, with beer and sledges flowing in equal measures. With some more refining tweaks and the acquisition of a few more licenses, next year’s game could certainly knock off Shane Warne Cricket ’99 and become the greatest cricket game of all time. As it stands this is a game that’s merely good, with the potential to be great. Kind of like the current Australian team.

Golf nuts of any level – from armchair to aspiring pros – will love what Wii team has done for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2011. There's a lot of recycling from previous games but this year's edition does improve the experience with things like higher sensitivity controls, new camera perspectives, the Ryder Cup tournament, miniature golf, and – most importantly – online disc golf. While not a tremendous night and day difference from Tiger Woods 2010, there's still enough here to warrant an upgrade for those who leapt on the game last year. And if you haven't yet hit the links on Wii yet, this is a fantastic place to start.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 sports some cool improvements that really keep it more in line with the genuine article -- at least more so than the previous PS3 and 360 efforts. Ryder Cup is a good thought, but EA Sports should have capitalized a bit more on adding such a prestigious and momentous event. As it stands, it feels a little hollow. The career and online modes have seen few changes since last year, but there are a few noteworthy deviations. That withstanding, Tiger Woods 11 has it where it counts in that the core golf is much better than it has been in some time. Now I’d just like the rest of the game to catch up.

Ben 10 Alien Force: The Rise of Hex is a waste of ten dollars. It has mundane, awkward platforming, no story context, and a strange difficulty imbalance. There are countless platformers more worth your time than Rise of Hex -- I recommend you play those.

Snoopy Flying Ace is a genuine surprise in a sea of predictable major releases this year. It's the rare licensed title that uses the property as a means to augment a rock-solid foundation of good game design and great controls to make something really special. It's a fun, hardcore action game that adults and kids alike can play together and enjoy without the weight of realistic violence, and it does so without any real compromises. At 800 MS Points, Flying Ace is a steal for multiplayer gamers.

No narrative ties down any of the missions in the Insurgency Pack, and it in no way expands upon the cooperative campaign. But hey, that's not why people play Deniable Ops, so if all you're looking for is a few new playgrounds to end some lives prematurely in, you can consider this $10 well spent. Besides, my thinking is that story would only make me think about why I'm killing people without question -- something no good stone-faced killer needs on their mind.

RUSE takes a while to warm up, but once it does, it's cracking stuff, as the game's unfailingly proper British generals would no doubt put it. The Ruse mechanics do much to breathe fresh air into the genre, allowing for a pleasing game of tank-based poker. Its faults – that slow, slow pacing and yawning, sluggish start – are largely the result of this approach, and we're inclined to forgive them for the focus on the original psychological gameplay it creates.

Backbreaker, despite its many flaws and poor design choices, actually does have potential thanks to the euphoria engine. The groundwork has been laid for a fine football experience (as you can tell from some of the cool-looking tackles) but the developers need to re-think some of the steps they've taken to get to this point, mainly in the core gameplay of Backbreaker. As it stands, this game feels more like a beefy Xbox Live Arcade or PlayStation Network release searching for its identity than something that belongs on retail store shelves.

Obsidian's Alpha Protocol offers an original setting and the power of choice. It's a game where you decide the fate of a majority of the cast, giving you the sense that the story is guided as much by you as it is by the designers. With a number of ways to customize the experience – you can play as a stealth agent with a silenced pistol or bullet-spraying berserker – it initially seems like everything should be in place for an entertaining role-playing experience. But Obsidian fumbled this one, badly in spots. A more rounded cast of characters could have helped out immensely because it's difficult to build up any emotional investment with the stereotypical personalities wrapped up in this twisting tale of conspiracy and global domination. Imbalanced skills, glitches, dim-witted enemies, and repetitive encounters further undercut the entertainment, making Alpha Protocol a game you can safely pass by.

Blur isn't the addictive, competitive online game that people wanted it to be. Rather, Blur is a palate-cleansing game, the type of experience you pop in for a few minutes with your friends when you're looking for a break between sessions of a game you really like marathoning. If you love a more hardcore racing experience, and the idea of truly chaotic combat sounds appealing, than Blur might be for you. If you're looking for a fun, pick-up-and-play combat racer, then I think you need to go back to Mario Kart or, better yet, pick up the excellent Split/Second.

When so many Sims expansions have seemed relatively inconsequential, Ambitions stands out for how substantially it alters a key component of the game. The new profession system will doubtless keep Sims 3 fans busy for many more hours, and the other additions included will also give players plenty of new stories to tell for Sims both new and old. If this is the type of content we can expect from Sims 3 expansions going forward, content that evolves core game mechanics, color me impressed.
