For what you're paying Puzzlegeddon is a great value and provides gameplay with a surprising amount of depth. The interplay between matching colored blocks and attacking and defending opponents is well done, and the game gives you three difficulty levels worth of bots to practice against online and off. The real test, however, is against humans, something that will likely prove difficult to set up given how few are actually playing online. If you're bored of standard Bejeweled match-3 type games and want something well designed that feels quite a bit different, Pieces Interactive's Puzzlegeddon is a solid choice.

Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it. I asked Capcom to bring Fighting Street to the Virtual Console in an article I wrote a year or so ago, thinking that it would be fun to have the predecessor to the great Street Fighter II legacy available for download on Wii. And so we do, now -- but I'm second-guessing my initial request. Fighting Street is so clunky, unresponsive and poorly presented that it's an embarrassment to try and play at all. It's a woeful piece of work that hasn't held up over time, and might have been better left in the past and forgotten. At the very least, though, Fighting Street does offer an interesting bit of historical contrast -- you can appreciate the excellence of Street Fighter II all the more when you've experienced the dreadful design that preceded it. It makes you want to applaud Capcom's designers in the early '90s all over again, for having taken such an awful base design from the '80s, overcome its many, many faults, capitalized on its few strengths and transformed it into such a revolutionary new vision that many people don't even remember a Street Fighter 1 ever even existed. So there's that. But that probably just means you should keep your money even further away from this one, and re-invest it in one of those many, many slightly different editions of Street Fighter II on sale in the Wii Shop instead.

Alien Breed Evolution is a straightforward action game with satisfying shooting mechanics and some impressive visuals. It steals ideas from all over the place but the interactivity of videogames always seems to make blatant imitation easier to swallow than it is in other mediums. Anyone who played the original Alien Breed back in the day will find their simple top-down shooter is all grown up with great lighting effects, an atmospheric soundtrack, and affecting cinematic events -- but the gameplay itself is rooted in 1990.

So while Earthworm Jim 2 scores for being one of the wackiest, most nonsensical games ever created thanks to its absolutely ridiculous array of characters, locations and slightly disgusting imagery, it doesn't manage to surpass its predecessor in any significant way in the end. Its over-reliance on specific, one-stage-only game design gimmicks make it feel like you're never getting the chance to play the real game -- and then, when you do, you get disappointed by the odd cuts and control troubles found there, too. This is still a decent effort overall, and one that is certainly still worth a look if you were a fan of the original. But I'd caution against jumping straight into this sequel without already having an established love for Earthworm Jim in place -- if you did, you might just leave confused, eight bucks poorer and wondering how this kind of insanity was ever as popular as it was. (It might be worthwhile, too, to wait around and see what Gameloft does with that EJ1 Remake on WiiWare -- if that ends up being good, a remake of EJ2 could very well follow it and make this VC release obsolete for all but the truly nostalgic.)

NHL 2K10 shouldn’t be compared to NHL 10 or even NHL 2K10 on Xbox 360 and PS3. On PS2 the game is much more its own entity, for better or worse. It is in no way a simulation of the sport despite a feature set that would indicate otherwise. The high-scoring games and arcade-like checks as well as the speed of the gameplay make for an entirely unrealistic experience, but at least it’s not without its moments of fun. You won’t mistake it for one of its vastly superior competitors, but if NHL 2K10 on PlayStation 2 is your only option for virtual hockey this year; you could do a lot worse.

For those among you that consider yourselves diehard Resident Evil fans, this port of the original Resident Evil Zero technically works fine (besides the aforementioned freezes). If you can somehow look past the franchise's many flaws, which stubbornly cling to the series like t-virus parasites, then Resident Evil Archives: Resident Evil Zero is a cheap way to experience the original GameCube game. With that said, there are recent survival horror games built on much more elegant gameplay mechanics, so it's difficult for me to recommend Resident Evil Zero. When you couple the awkward tank controls with horrible item management, poor pacing and a lack of scares, you'll come to see that Resident Evil Zero is better left on store shelves.

Even with the compromises, Street Fighter Alpha 2 still has a great fighting engine at its core, and is still a pretty good game -- so the score you'll see below is still going to be a good one. But, for my money, there are better options for getting your Fighter fix on Wii -- six other Street Fighter games are available through Virtual Console alone, and we're only about a month away from the American release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, too. And if you're specifically wanting a Street Fighter Alpha experience, you're better off searching out a more complete, less compromised edition than this one. Besides, there's a good chance you didn't even know this game existed in the first place, right? No harm in letting it fade from your memory again.

MX vs. ATV Reflex on the DS has a lot of problems. The controls are sluggish and unpolished, there are presentational issues in terms of vehicle selection and the basic physics system is a hindrance. But, if you look really hard and realize that you're playing an arcade-slanted racer rather than the sort of physics-driven game that you'll find on the consoles, then a haze of nostalgia may overcome a tiny portion of your soul and give you a glimpse at fun. Just a tiny one.

On paper, The Saboteur is a winner. The plot is intriguing and the conversation is snappy. And if you tire of following the particulars of "La Resistance" there are always some nicely rendered nude women to ogle. But boil it down to the gameplay and you're left with a good chunk of clumsy third-person shooting with bits of awkward driving. The Saboteur borrows plenty of great elements from other games, but doesn't execute on them as successfully. That's not to say there isn't fun to be had because there's plenty. It just isn't as well constructed as many other similar games on the store shelf.

I think this is the best episode of the entire season. The writing is great, the conflicts are interesting, the jokes are funny and the payoff lives up to the promise. The only downside is that the puzzles are much too straightforward in the beginning so the game essentially solves itself as you move from one area to the next. Things get a little more complicated when LeChuck appears and you'll find yourself grappling with a couple of large, multi-part puzzles. Though there's no obvious cliffhanger, the material is set up nicely for a second season. Here's hoping it's even better than the first.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 is a very impressive soccer game for the Wii, especially if you’ve never played the series on Nintendo’s system. It doesn’t bring the same wow factor as the first go-round thanks to its general lack of innovation, but at least the soccer is still very solid and the few changes are most definitely for the better. PES 2010 is one of the very few sports titles that will have you wishing that you could play the Xbox 360 or PS3 version with a Wii remote and nunchuk.

Whatever you do, do not buy this game, even if you happen to have the spare cash lying around. The gameplay is poorly done, the visuals are substandard and the profanity is laughable. The only reason anyone would ever want this title is for achievement/trophy farming, but even then you should rent it or look for a bargain basement sale. Even then, it’s hard to justify polluting your game account with this detritus. I will say it again: do not buy this game.

Planet 51: The Game isn’t a bad licensed game, really, but something far worse: it’s a boring game. In the rush to create something that wasn’t like most other tacked-on license game efforts, Pyro instead crafted a game that’s simply lifeless. Beyond any performance issues, there’s simply nothing here that’s compelling or attractive beyond seeing clips of the actual movie. Unfortunately, at some point the clips end and you’re given a rather start reminder of just how far video licensed games have to go to improve their reputation.

It was a great decision for Activision to offer up Call of Duty Classic so console gamers could experience the game that kick-started a phenomenon. But little care was given to making sure this experience was perfectly suited for PS3. The control set-up definitely needs some fine-tuning, the multiplayer only offers eight-player skirmishes and the audio doesn't do the original justice. Call of Duty is still an enjoyable game, but it doesn't really shine in this downloadable version.

When I first saw Karaoke Revolution at E3 2009, I thought this game really had a chance at returning the franchise to greatness. Sadly, the dated animations, blah presentation, and complete lack of DLC or online play keep this title from being anything amazing, but singers will have fun with it if they lower their expectations. The master tracks are a welcome addition, the creation modes have some depth, and it’s cool that the party mode remembers the people who have played before. Still, there’s no need to rush out and snatch this one up.

I wanted to like C.O.P., but there simply wasn’t enough effort put into localizing it and giving the characters some personality. Everything is as flat and lifeless as those streets that come pouring past your zippy little cars at 60fps. Is the game worth a look? Oh, absolutely, but understand that once you’ve seen what the competition has to offer, a look’s about all C.O.P. is good for.
