The Misadventures of Mr. P.B. Winterbottom has the looks and the brains to be one of the best XBLA games. You've never seen or heard anything quite like it and the puzzle challenges are wildly inventive. It is extremely difficult, though, and can be exhausting to the point that you aren't motivated to continue playing. It can also be very rewarding when you finally figure a puzzle out. Just take a break and come back, because this is a very clever game that deserves to be played.

Aliens vs. Predator could have been a truly great game. It’s there, you can almost feel it, but it’s constantly ripped away from you because of some poor design decisions and a general lack of quality that keeps the game from having that triple-A feeling. It’s by no means a bad game and will almost certainly please fans more so than either movie effort, but when compared to other first-person shooter titles on the market, the difference is clear.

The Ace Attorney series has never reached a true level of excellence. While there are some really strong elements added for Miles Edgeworth, the core is still trial-and-error gameplay. Some of the logic left me scratching my head and it's entirely too linear. Fans of the Ace Attorney series will like it, no doubt about that, but there's also no denying that the series is running out of steam.

Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll, like the previous Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, is a fun ball-rolling design with a nice stack of challenges and a hit-or-miss pile of mini-games. There are some neat inclusions like the Super Mario Galaxy-like co-op mode where other players can shoot obstacles out of the players’ way. The added balance board support wasn’t that much of a selling point for me – on paper it sounds like a match made in heaven but in practice it’s just a great big load of frustration. Skip the balance board support and you’ll have a good time.

Darwinia+ is one of the most impressive packages available on Xbox Live Arcade. For $15 you get two complete games set in a fascinating virtual reality. There are some minor issues that bog the game down from time to time, but they are easy to overlook considering how much care and thought went into the overall package. Everything from the music to the intro bootloaders to the Darwinian's culture has been meticulously crafted for an experience unlike any other game out there. You'll definitely want to invite these little guys onto your hard drive.

The original Shadow of Chernobyl was an incredible game in many ways, offering players an opportunity to explore an exceptionally realized, radiation-blasted setting seeded with horror and entertainment. Yet it was also lacking in a few areas, one being polish, and another being a solid character progression infrastructure. With Call of Pripyat, GSC Game World delivers its most stable and playable version of the Zone yet. Though it's not quite as surprising as the original, it's still a standout game that deserves to be given a chance by anyone that reads this. There aren't many titles able to offer up such an affecting atmosphere mixed with enjoyable mechanics, and even if some bits of the game remain uneven, it's an experience that will stick with you long after it's over.

No More Heroes 2's side job mini-games, the continuation of Mega Man…and now Dark Void Zero. Old is the new new: the 8-bit Revolution is upon us once more, and it's great to experience some new games in the classic style. Dark Void Zero would have been considered a "classic" had it been made 25 years ago, and today, it's a retro-style blast.

For an investment of eight dollars, downloading Pilotwings in its new Virtual Console re-release will net you an interesting piece of Nintendo's past. Those wanting a fuller, less restricted exploration experience, though, might be better off saving that money for the eventual re-release of Pilotwings 64, the sequel that fleshed out this game's concepts into a more robust experience -- or just keep the cash unspent entirely and go back to look at Wii Sports Resort's flight segments, which represent the 2009 advancement of what started back in 1991.

Shattered Memories isn't your typical Silent Hill game. Some devoted fans will undoubtedly raise a fuss over every difference whether subtle or grand, but I believe this re-imagining succeeds as both a sequel and a departure. The overarching narrative, characters, and monsters will all seem faintly familiar to Silent Hill purists, but Climax has taken the series and run with it, crafting a title refreshingly different yet still at times quite scary. I feel that the separation between safe exploration, puzzling and run-for-your-life monster scenarios is too transparent and as a result you will inevitably come to fear the ice and few things else. And despite a unique psych profile system that allows for multiple endings and various changes throughout the adventure, the game runs a bit short -- perhaps too short for some. Even so, there are some incredible moments encapsulated within Harry's icy journey and you will be both wowed and scared as you finally uncover the truth about his daughter's disappearance and the nightmarish goings-on in the creepy town. For my money, the game controls and looks best on Wii. Not only is the Wii remote ideal for Mason's flashlight, but there are added visual effects in the Nintendo built. However, the PS2 iteration is no slouch, either. It very closely resembles the Wii incarnation and controls well enough with dual-analog sticks that gamers who don't own both systems won't miss the Wii remote. Meanwhile, since the content is otherwise identical, there's great fun to be had.

Chime is easy to recommend. It's cheap, it'll keep you amused for hours, and the $5 you spend goes to charity. The musical puzzle game is easy to get sucked into and will appeal particularly to Lumines fans. Its visuals don't live up to the impressive soundtrack, but once Chime hypnotizes you, you won't notice. Charity work isn't often this much fun.

It's great to have the Vandal Hearts series back but this art style was a mistake. Truly, these characters look like ugly munchkins. Thankfully the strategy gameplay is good enough to convince fans of the genre to overlook the visuals and dig into some old school turn-based battles. The skill system is a great way to customize your team and those geysers of blood never get old. Flames of Judgment might not win over gamers who find SRPGs tedious, but if you're a fan of the genre you'll get your fix here.
