Mirror's Edge is a classic example of some awesome ideas that just didn't pan out the way that was originally intended. The list of moves could be more expansive -- maybe by adding a fourth button to the mix -- and the world feels entirely too constricting for what could be a huge open city. Couple those gripes with some unappealing combat and a sometimes buggy design and Mirror's Edge falls short of my expectations. The ideas are there for a very cool experience, and I truly hope that a sequel is spawned, but this first attempt falls just a bit short.

This isn't to say that My Chinese Coach is all bad. You're sure to pick up a few basics like "hello", "goodbye" and "how are you". And some of the games are pretty entertaining. Yet without a proper classroom environment it's far too easy for players to get lost and even overwhelmed by My Chinese Coach. Unless you need to brush up on the basics or are desperate to learn Mandarin in a hurry, the best way to learn Chinese is to just take a class.

In short, though FM09’s 3D match engine is Sports Interactive’s one real attempt at breaking from its comfort zone this time around, it’s also this latest iterations biggest disappointment. We can certainly see the potential of Sports Interactive’s newfound interest in 3D and we hope it all comes together more gracefully in FM2010. In the meantime though, its relative failure doesn’t detract from the fact that FM09 is still easily the most in-depth, enjoyable and addictive way to pretend you manage a football team. When you have a formula as compulsively successful as this, one that guarantees you top the PC best-sellers list year on year, it’s churlish to suggest reckless tinkering for the sake of it.

As with most well-regarded and highly praised classic RPGs from the past, it's difficult to sum up in a single article the full appeal of a game like Phantasy Star IV. This title is still so beloved to this day, though, that dedicated fans still replay it again and again, Genesis loyalists from yesteryear still swear by it, and it's continued to be recognized in modern lists of the greatest video games ever made. IGN's most recent all-time best list saw it clocking in at #61 overall. Add that continued praise to the fact that this adventure will offer you upwards of 30 hours of gameplay, and consider that that's a pretty acceptable return on an investment of just eight bucks, and Phantasy Star IV should quickly become a game that you're considering as the one worth cashing in that Santa-delivered Wii Points card to download. The Virtual Console may have had a slimmer Christmas, but this single present is more than enough to make for a happy end to the holiday season.

Toughman Contest uses the 32X for visual boosts instead of gameplay enhancements, making this boxer something you can pick up on the Genesis and lose out on very little. The control issues and difficulty keep Toughman at arm's length for most. If you're assembling a 32X library, put this one on your second- or third-tier get-list.

Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels is a missed opportunity to do much more on Wii -- and strangely, it feels in many ways like a dumbed-down version of Force Unleashed, which came out first. Krome Studios has recreated the less compelling Clone Wars universe complete with high production values, from clean graphics to lots of audio work, but the gameplay experience is lackluster. This is mostly true because of a forced gesture system that is clearly doing nothing more than replacing buttons and not really using the Wii remote in any beneficial way. Kids might enjoy all the shaking, but nobody else will, especially when the prospect of really, truly wielding the Wii remote like a lightsaber lays just over the horizon.

A kid-friendly, motion-controlled version of Shaun White Snowboarding could have been a disaster, but this turns out to be a truly slick edition of the franchise. Not only is this one of the best-looking Wii games available, both remote and balance board controls feel really nice. I recommend it regardless of whether or not you own the board. This will be another good one to bring out when your non-gamer friends come over, as it fits the "pick up and play" description perfectly. The option to work through the entire game cooperatively is great but it would have been nice if your progression could carry over between single- and multiplayer. Overall this is a polished package and a great example of how to treat the Wii version of a multi-platform game.

Shaun White Snowboarding is an uneven game that often feels at odds with itself. Still, I had fun making my way down the different mountains and riding with friends. If you're one of the many hoping this would be the new Amped or 1080, lower your expectations. Though SWS begins in that fashion, it loses the plot halfway through and becomes a different game. While there are, historically, better snowboarding games, none of them exist on Xbox 360. And for that reason alone, anyone looking for some multiplayer fun and a few good hours on the mountainside should give Shaun White Snowboarding a try.

Go, Diego, Go! Great Dinosaur Rescue doesn't really have many redeeming qualities. There's not a whole lot here to serve any educational purposes, certainly not more than what you'd find on any given episode of the show. It's also incredibly repetitive, and it's exactly the same as last year's Diego title. If your kids love Diego, spend the cash on a DVD or two instead. You'll get a lot more value for the money.

It's easy to be jaded about World War II shooters, but Treyarch makes a convincing argument to stay excited with World at War. The game is packed with a deep amount of gameplay to appeal to every type of player, from those who want to experience a gritty single-player campaign to those who like to play with their friends to those who just like to play multiplayer. This is a solid, confident shooter with plenty to offer the casual and hardcore alike.

If you are starting a 32X collection, Virtua Racing Deluxe should be one of your first three "gets." It's not hard to be one of the best 32X games since so many were poor, but Virtua Racing Deluxe is a good racer in any company. (SEGA really knew how to create racing games back in the proverbial day.) Plus, it's a great artifact from the transition between not just 2D and 3D, but the 16-bit generation and the 32-bit machines.

FaceBreaker K.O. Party is a pretty entertaining Wii game, if not for the fact that it's just too basic for hardcore gamers to really get into. Oftentimes we hear readers wondering about the score comparisons between Wii and 360 or PS3 games, and while it's often a real "apples to oranges" philosophy, the fact that K.O. Party is so similar to the other next-gen offerings on 360 and PS3 really helps FaceBreaker's case. This design was meant for Wii - it's fast, simple, has just a bit of depth so hardcore gamers can have some fun with it, but is ultimately a title anyone can pick up and swing away with - so while the hardest of the hardcore fans on the other systems may not want to touch it in favor of the more realistic, strategic Fight Night: Round 3, FaceBreaker is a pretty solid Wii title despite it's flaws. Wii is all about grabbing a group of family or friends and having a blast, and while FaceBreaker has enough cheap AI tactics and random "strategy vs. waggle-fest" face-offs that don't always favor the smarter player, it is good fun when trying to live up to its "K.O. Party" name spin-off. It's a slick looking game, can be great for any type of gamer against each other, but won't ever push into that upper-tier of must-have, must-play titles on Wii. If it's about being a party game, FaceBreaker succeeds, but is shallow in a "mindless fun" kind of way. If it's about making a competitive, in-depth boxing/fighting game that truly catches the "gamer" crowd, it'll take more balance next time around.
