I can remember back more than three years ago when Tonic Trouble was still called Ed. It was one of Nintendo 64's first promised titles, and at the time I had hopes that it might actually one-up Super Mario 64. Three years later the wait, in my opinion, has not been worth it. Tonic Trouble is a generic, lifeless platformer and in spite of sharing much of the same features that somehow work wonderfully for Rayman 2, nothing seems to click together as it should for this title. While nothing, including control, design or graphics, can be described as poor, none of it is exceptionally good either. We are left with a game that is neither particularly good nor bad. Had Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64 and Ubi Soft's own Rayman 2 not existed, Tonic Trouble might have impressed Nintendo 64 owners. Unfortunately though, they do and it doesn't.

Taking everything into consideration, Marvel vs. Capcom is an excellent post-launch purchase. With the mini-glut of fighting titles available for the system by the end of October, this is definitely one of your better choices, if not the best. It's certainly the best 2D title on the system until Street Fighter Alpha 3 rolls into town, so don't pass this one up.

And that's basically the big problem here. Mortal Kombat Gold is a lot like a bag of Twizzlers. Sure it's sweet the first few times you delight in it's tasty red goodness, and it's cool for parties, but after a while you're left wanting something a little less red, with a whole lot more substance to it.

Duke Nukem: Zero Hour is a very good action-shooter that, with a few improvements, could have been a classic. The game's 4MB Expansion Pak enabled high-resolution mode is too slow to be played and its glaring lack of save-points really puts a hamper in replay value, as gamers may eventually grow too frustrated with the title to give it another shot. However, if players don't mind Duking in low-resolution mode and can live without save-points, Zero Hour comes highly recommended thanks to top control, lots of environments to explore, more baddies to kill than ever before, an excellent multiplayer mode and extremely pretty visuals. All in all this game is still an excellent buy despite some significant shortcomings.

Surprisingly, it took me a while to actually get into the game. I mean, it's not easy. Whether that's by design or by mistake I'm not so sure, but it's not a cakewalk after the Mythril Mines. In fact, the worst designed course in the game is the Haunted Mansion. Even after mastering that one, I hated the swirling, corkscrew section and the trap box. Ughhhh. I can't believe this is a Square game. As anyone who follows the Japanese press knows, Chocobo Racing arrived in Japan first. But the differences between the two are almost nil. The graphics suck, the frame rate is weak, the whole thing reeks of a hack job, and unlike every other Square game I've seen, this is unpolished and problematic. Eventually I had fun, but that's after hours of this to try and seek out the fun. And I get paid to play games, not the other way around. My advice? Unless you absolutely love Square games and defend their every aspect to the death - and simply have to play Chocobo and the other Final Fantasy characters - stay far away from this. It's great for kids who don't know the difference, but for anyone else, it's average at best. Go get Crash Team Racing if you want a real kart game on PlayStation.
