Test Drive Off Road is a very underwhelming racer. There's nothing terribly bad about the game (except for the lack of a two-player mode), but it's not that special, either. The game feels a lot like last year's Test Drive 4, with the same floaty control and weird in-air physics. If you pick the right vehicle the game plays fast and intense, but most of the time the trucks just lumber along. The World Tour is a good way to play the game, unfortunately it's a bit redundant because if you run out of time in the third race of a four race circuit, the game ends and you have to start back at the beginning. Very annoying...thankfully you can turn off the Checkpoints so you're not racing against the clock. Timing is everything, and Accolade just beat out Rally Cross 2 ¿ its obvious competition. Unfortunately from what we've seen, despite not having any real vehicles Rally Cross 2 is the much better choice for off-road racing.

An above average racer that suffers from one major problem: It tries to be both arcade racer and sim racer, and doesn't truly excel as either one. But with only F-1 World Grand Prix as its major competition in the sim racing genre on N64, NASCAR 99 is fun enough for most gamers looking for a more serious racer than Top Gear or Rush. However, unless you're a die-hard NASCAR fan or a true racing nut, I suggest renting the game first before purchasing your own copy.

As far as RPG titles go on the Game Boy, Dragon Warrior Monsters definitely tops the list, just missing Pokemon by a whisker. The randomization of levels as well as the Monster Breeding option is more than enough to justify picking this title up. It's an excellent adventure with only a few spelling mistakes (bad Eidos for mixing "it's" for "its"), but the world doesn't seem as well established as the whole Pokeuniverse. Still, second best ain't bad.

I do suggest you check this game out, mainly because it boasts a lot of originality, two difficulty modes, and a fair number of enjoyable missions. But the control problems, lack of balance and repetitive gameplay will turn off the majority of gamers spoiled by games like GoldenEye or Metal Gear. Even with its flaws, I'm glad Infogrames/Ocean finally finished the project and got it out the door (I'm sure the game's programmers are, too). Let's hope that the follow-up title will be designed from scratch, with all new technology and engines -- but retains the same level of originality. A good, challenging rental (especially on its "Impossible" difficulty setting) for one player.
