Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown couldn't have brought back the series after its more than a decade-long hiatus in a better way. With an engaging story, well-crafted Metroidvania mechanics, and a touch of character-action games features in its combat system, Sargon's adventure will be remembered by fans for a long time, even with its minor issues.

DreadOut 2 DreadOut 2 segna il ritorno dei talenti di Digital Happiness nel mondo dei survival horror. Rispetto al passato, la formula è stata ampliata: tuttavia, persistono brutture tecniche ed un game design a tratti più oscuro della storia raccontata. L'avventura di Linda è ricca di spunti interessanti e lugubri, ma si affanna ed inciampa in un'ambizione fuori parametro rispetto ai mezzi e risultati raggiunti. In un mondo, come quello indipendente, in cui a volte si riescono ad ottenere risultati eccelsi che sanno coniugare risorse ed aspirazioni, la produzione indonesiana resta un esperimento incoraggiante ma ancora lontano dal giusto equilibrio per essere ricordato dal grande pubblico. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown captures not only what made games such as The Sands of Time so good, but it irons out a lot of the little issues that plagued the 3D games in this series by opting for a 2D perspective – and owning it. It also works extremely well as a traditional Metroidvania, sticking with tried-and-true elements of the genre but executing on them with precision. The story can feel a bit jumbled at times, but it's the fast and fun combat system, the tight and satisfying controls, and the stylish look and feel that elevate Sargon’s journey and make The Lost Crown a worthy successor to the best of the Prince of Persia legacy.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a slick return to the roots of this franchise that serves up clever 2.5D action wrapped up in a delightful art style and satisfying story. There's a smart balance here between old-school levels of action and challenge, moreish combat, and neat puzzles, all mixed with accessibility options and fine-tuning that open things up to newcomers and casual players. We knew Ubisoft Montpellier was a pair of safe hands and the team hasn't let us down, serving up the first must-play of 2024 in a Switch port that absolutely does the business.

Dimostrando di non aver perso il “tocco magico” dopo un periodo trascorso sviluppando giochi mobile (Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, Rayman Mini) e uno sparatutto per la realtà virtuale (Space Junkies), Ubisoft Montpellier è riuscita a tirare fuori dal cilindro un buon metroidvania che segna l’atteso ritorno di una storica saga videoludica. Come già asserito più volte, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown non ha nulla da invidiare ai migliori esponenti del genere sul versante del gameplay, facendosi promotore di un sistema di combattimento dinamico e momenti dell’avventura in cui trovano terreno fertile sezioni plaftorm architettate con criterio, sebbene il bilanciamento generale non sia sempre impeccabile. In mezzo, oltre a una distribuzione intelligente delle varie fasi di gioco, brillano anche le numerose opzioni legate all’accessibilità che si preoccupano di andare incontro alle diverse esigenze dei giocatori. A non essere sempre all'altezza del pedigree dello studio francese, purtroppo, è soprattutto la visione artistica, qui non particolarmente ispirata sia per quanto riguarda la caratterizzazione dei personaggi, sia in termini narrativi.

Cos'è Prince of Persia? Dopo tutte le sue trasformazioni negli anni non è una risposta facile da dare, ed è dunque alquanto curioso che un metroidvania spiccatamente votato all'azione sia forse il titolo che è stato più di ogni altro capace di catturare l'anima della serie. Volete l'azione al cardio palma di Warrior Within? Qui la troverete nelle combinazioni acrobatiche e nelle spettacolari battaglie contro i boss. Volete il platforming brutale dell'opera originale e l'agilità delle incarnazioni tridimensionali più recenti? Non resterete a bocca asciutta, grazie a un level design di tutto rispetto e a un approccio tutt'altro che morbido alla difficoltà di certe fasi. Ubisoft Montpellier forse non avrà creato il gioco più originale in circolazione, vero, ma l'ultima creatura del team non si limita a copiare: The Lost Crown usa al meglio ciò che ha reso grandi alcuni dei migliori metroidvania del genere, e riesce a distinguersi dalla massa con la sua qualità. Un gran gioco, che qualunque amante dell'azione dovrebbe provare.
