The Callisto Protocol is a supremely atmospheric and action-heavy tour through a spectacular slaughterhouse set in distant space. Its largely linear design makes for minimal backtracking, meaning it trims the fat while leaving no shortage of bone and gristle to rip and tear. However, it also betrays its survival horror roots by regularly tipping the balance of power too far in favour of the player, and while there’s plenty of murderous fun to be had using giant grinding mechanisms to make mulch out of mutants, such cheap thrills come at the high cost of puncturing any tension and dread that the tremendous art and audio design work so hard to invoke. Aside from the meaty melee combat, there’s also the overriding sense that there’s not a lot here that hasn’t been done before – and there’s disappointingly little to do once you’ve beaten the campaign. Thus The Callisto Protocol is a satisfyingly gory spiritual successor to the Dead Space series, but it’s ultimately more of a striking modern mimic than a scary new mutation.

Dead Space 4 in all but name, except with no puzzles and surprisingly little suspense. The Callisto Protocol has plenty of gritty action but that’s not quite enough to sustain interest for its entire duration.

Il a tardé à venir, mais The Callisto Protocol marque définitivement notre année 2022. Le jeu de Striking Distance Studio avait la lourde responsabilité de venir après le mythique Dead Space, et il réussit tout de même à combler toutes nos attentes et plus encore. The Callisto Protocol est une expérience immersive, totalement nouvelle génération, et horrifique à souhait. Il nous répugne autant qu'il nous attire, et on adore ça.

Expérience résolument old school qui, visuels mis à part, aurait parfaitement pu être réalisée sur Xbox 360 et PlayStation 3, The Callisto Protocol ne surprend jamais vraiment, et se termine un peu trop rapidement. Cependant, résumer le premier jeu de Striking Distance à cela serait réducteur. Parce qu’il s’agit d’un TPS bien rythmé, assez captivant malgré son scénario un brin prévisible, qu’il est à la fois généreux dans sa mise en scène et dans ses situations, profondément violent, et parvient à offrir quelques passages marquants. Bref, The Callisto Protocol n’est pas la claque que certains espéraient, mais il s’agit néanmoins d’un jeu honnête qui a tout ce qu’il faut pour plaire aux amateurs d’horreur, d’action et de Science-Fiction.
