Sonic’s sensation of speed is mostly intact and most stages look impressive, but Sonic: Lost World stumbles due to poor level design. Pathways don't always make sense, and all the momentum-building tools in the world won't save a game from so many awkward starts and stops. Despite an interesting new direction for the ‘90s mascot, Sonic: Lost Worlds barely scratches its potential, and reuses boss battles to an uncomfortable degree. Sadly, this isn't where it all falls into place, but a few payoff moments made the experience feel worth it.

After the success of Sonic 4, Colors, and Generations, this is a big disappointment for Sega’s speeding blue bullet. Sonic Lost World clumsily tears all the wrong pages out of the Super Mario Galaxy playbook, and in so doing, loses the breathless speed and fluidity that makes a Sonic game a Sonic game. Graphically it may talk the talk, but the controls and level design just can’t walk the walk, much less run it.

140 is a masterful, mentally stimulating platformer with a distinct visual and aural style. Its reflexive navigation is intrinsically tied to its awesome synth soundtrack, and its challenging levels are simple yet satisfying. At just one hour long, it’s about the length of an album rather than a game. Like a good record, though, 140 is worth throwing on repeat.

Skylanders Swap Force adds lots of things that are sure to please fans. The swappable Skylanders and new challenges are smart, and the story is as funny and charming as ever. I particularly like the way the writers build on the epilogue of the previous game. More than anything else, Skylanders is just fun – but to get the most out of it, you'll end up paying the price of the game a couple times over.

Skylanders Swap Force for the 3DS is a fun but short addition to the franchise. It's an acceptable substitute to the console experience, mostly on the strength of its interesting villain and original story. Just don't expect to get as much content out of this one as you'd get on the consoles.

Just Dance 2014 exerts no pressure, and demands no skill. It just invites you to have fun with it, whoever you are and whatever music you like. It’s wildly silly, creative and colourful, relying on daft, characterful choreography and to evoke a party atmosphere that puts everyone at ease. There’s not a lot here that wasn’t in Just Dance 4, or even Just Dance 3, but the series’ talent for getting people up and dancing is still unmatched. Dancing is fun no matter what, but this game is a master facilitator of that fun, a catalyst for laughter.

Scene by scene, Beyond: Two Souls is compelling enough, principally thanks to a remarkable performance from Ellen Page. But never before have I felt like such a passive participant in a video game, my choices and actions merely icing on a dense, multi-layered cake. Playing Beyond is a memorable experience, yes, but a good video game it is not; and while the credits were rolling I admit to thinking I would have been happier to sit back and watch a movie version that was eight-and-a-half hours shorter.

Even with its new content and options for alternate endings, Lone Survivor: Director's Cut doesn't really offer enough different experience to justify another purchase if you've played the PC version, unless you're that curious about the new endings. But if you've never experienced this survival horror indie sidescroller before, this is the best way to jump in. The hero's journey seems particularly personal on the Vita in dark rooms, and the Vita's control scheme suits the retro experience implied by the visuals.

Game Freak has really outdone itself this time, and Pokemon X and Y will be remembered as great transition point for the series’ transformation into an even more social, beautiful, and strategic game. Building on five generations of games, a digital menagerie of captivating creatures, and a wide range of diverse regions to explore, Pokemon X and Y proves this formulaic portable role-playing series can still deliver an innovative experience.

Tough but gratifying, F1 2013 is not a startling improvement from the already robust F1 2012, but it’s certainly Codemasters’ best and most confident crack at F1 to date. It looks good, sounds good, feels good, and is crammed with plenty to do. More than ever, F1 2013 requires the right combination of patience, finesse, and aggression to fight your way towards your goals (which won’t always be outright victory, and races are all the more believable for it). The new classic content ultimately doesn’t soar quite high enough to justify purchase alone for F1 2012 owners but, combined with the well-honed existing content, F1 2013 is a very complete and satisfying package overall. Yearly devotees will be less blown away than new fans, or ones returning from a year or two away from the series, but F1 2013 is the most definitive distillation of the motorsport to date.

“Come for the shooting, stay for the swordfighting,” quips Lo Wang in one of his huge vocabulary of one-liner taunts. It’s good start for a description of the appeal of Shadow Warrior, but it leaves out the surprisingly good story and impressive length (get your minds out of the gutter!) of the campaign. This is an old-school shooter that actually gets what made old-school shooters work, and it gives us some clever new ideas on top of them.

What game were we talking about again? I’ve pretty much forgotten Alien Rage already. Between its lack of personality or distinctive, original features of any kind, and completely non-existent multiplayer community, the only memorable aspect is its annoying and frustrating difficulty spikes.

Verdict Day suffers many obvious weaknesses: The graphics border on embarrassing. Too many missions feel repetitive and empty. The menus can be extremely aggravating. Still, there’s a special kind of magic here that most games would never even attempt. Verdict Day is deeply tactical and requires both planning and performance. It’s unforgiving and unapologetic, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Stepping back into the item world again and getting sucked in for level after level felt like putting on a favorite pair of shoes that never wore out. After some entertaining but hollow-feeling detours for the franchise, D2 puts Disgaea back where it belongs: the top of the strategy-RPG heap. Its ongoing tendency to reuse old, familiar visuals keeps it from being a revelation, but mechanically, this is the most finely tuned, feverishly addictive entry in the five-game series. I came with time to give, and a healthy appetite for old-school grinding, and just as its predecessor before it, Disgaea D2 took me for every free hour I had.
