Whether or not you’re a Star Wars fan, Angry Birds Star Wars is a ton of fun. With its latest, Rovio has proven that Angry Birds can be more than a casual slingshotting time killer. Although it doesn’t stray too far from its pick-up-and-play roots, at its best the game contains real challenge and surprisingly clever twists. Gamers will come for the Star Wars references, but they’ll stay for the huge variety of perfectly-tuned stages. Bring on more Angry Birds collaborations!

On paper, Farming Simulator 2013 doesn’t seem all that thrilling, but there’s something intangible that keeps me coming back from more. The combination of the excellent community, unwavering focus on running the business, and the simplicity of the controls and your responsibilities creates a unique business simulation that rewards you proportionally to the amount of work you put into it. I’ve genuinely enjoyed playing it, and I’ll continue to do so even after this review is posted. It’s not the prettiest or deepest business simulator, but it would be folly to just dismiss it because of its subject matter. If you are patient and interested in a relaxing game without absolute winning or losing conditions, give it a try.

Painkiller: Hell & Damnation is a throwback to a game that was already a throwback, and it recaptures what the original was all about with almost slavish devotion. However, shiny new Unreal Engine 3 graphics can't make up for simplistic, glitchy AI, a middling level selection, and busted, extremely underpopulated multiplayer. Go with Painkiller: Black Edition instead.

Transformers: Prime - The Game is fun while it lasts, and fun in any form is more than Nintendo fans could have hoped for after years of other, terrible Transformers titles. This game offers the same old story with the same old characters one more time, adding nothing new to the tired old rivalry between Optimus, Megatron, and all the rest of the robots in disguise. But the inventive, dynamic gameplay that captures the appeal of stepping into the shape-shifting body of a giant bot rescues the entire package from what otherwise might have been mediocrity. This is a truly fun game, and fans of the Transformers: Prime cartoon show should absolutely check it out.

This year it seems like everyone is releasing multiplayer only shooters, so it’s great to get a standout like Natural Selection 2. The RTS mechanics work well and make matches feel dynamic, and the two factions play strikingly differently from one another without feeling imbalanced. A better tutorial could go a long, long ways toward making it more approachable, but Natural Selection 2 is worth the frustration and failure to learn. Natural Selection 2 isn’t great only because it’s different, but because it does asymmetrical multiplayer so damn well, offering up a variety of experiences in one small game.

The concept driving Primal Carnage may be simple, but few other games have proven themselves so adept at handling the possibilities of a multiplayer bloodbath pitting dinosaurs against humans. It’s good, stupid fun no matter which side you play on, although a questionable option to switch sides midmatch occasionally leaves too many players stacked on the dino side. Still, the satisfying combat goes a long way toward making up for the absence of any gameplay modes aside from deathmatch, and the almost perfect balance softens the loss of unlockables or any sense of progression. Accept Primal Carnage on its own raw terms, in other words, and you’ll find many hours of fun gameplay in store. And with further updates supposedly on the way from Lukewarm, it’s quite possible that this quirky little release may single-handedly rescue the endangered dinosaurs-versus-humans genre from extinction.

What we’re all looking for in a game of Football Manager is that almost intangible ‘just one more game’ addiction, that feeling that you need just one more game. It’s the X-factor that separates Football Manager from the rest and the good news is that this version still has it. Sure, it’s a deep and complicated beast and occasionally it’s impossible to not feel powerless when things aren’t going your way, but that happens to managers all over the world in real life too, and that’s the point. Football Manager’s relentless strive for realism is sometimes its biggest fault, but with new modes and now new ways of playing it’s also managed to get that light touch back.

I didn't have much hope for Harvest Moon: A New Beginning going in, as I suspected it'd just be another of the franchise's annual revisits to the same old series staples. The same tried-and-true fundamentals. But though those same basics do form the base of this latest sequel, they're not alone. The game earns its subtitle on the strength of some great new customization-focused features that herald a promising future for the franchise, and give newcomers a good jumping-on point. It starts off slow – too slow – but if you give it time and work with it, A New Beginning may become one of your favorite installments in this series so far.

The foundation of Orgarhythm is an enticing fusion of several game types. But the slow pacing of play, in conjunction with flawed command chains and unit path-finding, result in a miserable mess of unfulfilled potential. Orgarhythm will not inspire a war march, nor will it live on in our memories as an example of rhythm fusion that braved the new and unusual. It would be much better for this song to end, unless the God of Light is willing to pick up the pace.

These aerial brawlers cleaned up nicely ten years later. Both Zone of the Enders titles do interesting things, but The 2nd Runner is a forgotten classic that holds up unquestionably better than the first game in the series. In that respect, the package value takes a hit overall – commit to this for one great game hoping you’ll enjoy both.

Most Wanted on Vita is something of an uncanny experience. A lot of the experience remains intact but its vitality has been drained away. It’s a muted affair, and that ultimately harms a game that derives so much of its charm from those little touches.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I wanted to like Ragnarok Odyssey. It was one of the PlayStation Vita games I was most looking forward to. But when all of its deficits stack up on one another, Ragnarok Odyssey comes precariously close to being a bad game. It starts out fun, quickly falls into an endless loop, and never goes anywhere. That’s a huge problem. Vita owners deserve more than a half-baked RPG with no style and very little substance. RPG fans want customization, not just a nod at it. They want stats, experience points and character building. They want menus that make sense. They want a story. They want to feel engaged because the game makes them want to play, not because there’s some vague hope that it may get better later. Ragnarok Odyssey doesn’t deliver, and your money is better spent elsewhere.

Pid held a place in my mind since I first played it months ago, and I’m glad I finally worked my way through the final product, even if I did yell, scream and slam my desk on more than one occasion. It took me just under 11 and a half hours to beat, though you could probably do it more quickly if you don’t die hundreds of times like I did (and if you do, the checkpoint system is forgiving enough to make that a non-issue). You can even play it with a friend. Just be aware that your game may lock up time to time; my PS3 froze twice while playing. For a downloadable game, Pid provides a lot of bang for your buck. There are collectibles to find and secret areas to uncover, a hard mode to play through once you beat the game on normal, and more. And while Pid can be frustrating and even obtuse at times, its unique approach to the puzzle-platformer – most reminiscent of the underplayed PSN game Rochard – is worth taking a look at.

Assassin's Creed III is very enjoyable overall, but it’s not consistently brilliant. Not everything about the game gels together convincingly and the missions’ unnecessary prescriptiveness sometimes undermines the sense of freedom that the rest of the game works so hard to create. But it achieves so much that you can’t help but respect it; no other open-world game has ever given us a setting that's as impressive to observe or as full of things to do as this. Connor’s story has its lulls but it still tells a tale much richer and more compelling than most other games manage, set in a fascinating period of history. Assassin’s Creed III isn’t as huge an improvement upon its predecessors’ achievements as many players will be hoping for, but it’s still up there with the best that the series has achieved - even if it isn't quite the best.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation is a simplified version of the Assassin's Creed franchise. The moves and kills you'd expect are here, but the story is boiled down to be easy to jump in and out of. That takes away some of the excitement in playing through it.
