I had a blast playing Axel & Pixel, but the thrill was short lived. It can be beaten in a day and although the arcade mini-games are worth sticking around for they're not as engrossing as the adventure. But I definitely recommend it to both point-and-click fans and younger gamers. This is one of those childrens' stories that will seem completely cracked out to adults. Hopefully it won't be the last we see of the painter and his dog.

Cities XL moves the city-building genre in the right direction. Its friendlier learning curve as compared to the SimCity series will rope in new players, while its greater city design freedom will keep vets interested. However, even with multiplayer trading and resource balance and management, Cities XL is still not as hardcore as the SimCity series, and the subscription cost is questionably worth the arguably shallow multiplayer content. We encourage you to give the demo a shot before committing to it. The future is bright for Cities XL, but it's doubtful that it's bright enough to dethrone SimCity 4 as the preferred city-building simulation.

FIFA 10 is the definitive soccer experience if there ever was one. It packages a list of modes that perform in wonderful harmony with one another thanks to Virtual Pro and the fact that the gameplay lives up to this praise should only sweeten the deal. Taking the game online is as awesome as it was last year and with Live Season 2.0 kicking off once the US version ships on October 20, soccer diehards are going to have even more to sink their teeth into. If you were a past soccer fan and are looking to get back into the swing of things or if you’ve been eagerly awaiting FIFA 10’s release, you absolutely, positively will not be disappointed.

Cabela's has been applying its brand name to hunting and fishing video games for a long time now, and, to my memory, none of its previous products have been real stand-out hits. Outdoor Adventures isn't either, but it at least addresses and common complaint about many of those past games and picks up the pace of the gameplay -- diving into this one is quick and easy, and you can play for short periods of time and still see a lot of action, instead of just sitting around and waiting for hours for bucks and birds to wander by. It's got a few issues and the fishing's mostly phoned in, but Outdoor Adventures may well be a decent option for aspiring woodsmen this season.

Anybody who has played more than a handful of JRPGs will find a game that feels all too familiar from the very outset. If you're fine with buying a game that will feel like you've probably played it before, by all means give Magnacarta 2 a shot. I'd say that newcomers would find more to like here, but the fact is that there are better JRPGs out there on Xbox 360 that I'd recommend as an intro to the genre before this middle of the road adventure.

Brutal Legend is a tour de force that wraps up humor, music, and clever gameplay into one highly polished package. You haven't played a game quite like this before and won't want to miss it. Tim Schafer is one of the funniest guys in games and Jack Black is one of the funniest guys in movies -- together they'll keep you ROFLing (although the laughs do taper off as you work your way through the game). Brutal Legend isn't quite perfect and there is room for improvement (it's a little short, side quests are repetitive...), but when the credits roll you'll find yourself hoping for a sophomore release. Double Fine created a rich heavy metal universe and backstory full of great characters and creatures, with potential for an out-of-this-world sequel. Here's hoping Schafer and company get a chance to take us there.

NBA Live 10 is an acceptable $40 investment. The basketball is decent, despite the myriad AI flaws that you’ll have to endure. The strongest asset for this portable title is its feature set which will provide you with hours of gameplay if you can deal with the shortcomings. Online ad hoc play performs well and there are always the mini-games if you get tired of the more traditional modes. With a healthy of dose of gameplay refinement NBA Live 11 could take down NBA: The Inside from Sony next season. For this year, stick with The Inside for your basketball cravings.

If you like RPGs, Half-Minute Hero is a refreshing take that mixes in all the quirks the genre is known for, and if you've never been into RPGs, it's light enough for any noob to get behind and enjoy; plus, there are a bunch of other gameplay types to get behind the controls of. I think there's a stumble here in presentation and there in clarity, but none of that detracts from making this a great portable game that PSP owners should seriously give a shot.

Had Akatsuki Rising presented players with a more enjoyable, more intuitive combat engine, I might have been able to forgive the fact that we're seeing the same story arc we've seen before. But even with an interesting item system and solid Ad Hoc multiplayer, the unintuitive lock-on system, mixed with an overly simple counter system, make Akatsuki Rising a mediocre game at best. Sorry Naruto fans -- this is not the hit PSP game you're looking for.

It would have taken a lot more polish and time to put Saw up there with the kings of the survival horror genre. But the developers are definitely onto something, and I'd like to see the Saw games improve over time. For now, some of the puzzles repeat a few times too many while the plot points and big scares at times run thin. The game would have been much more exciting had there been a tad more variety, or less filler. Overall, Saw is a welcome entry in the horror genre that provides a good dosage of thrills. Depending on your tolerance for repetition, it's a good way to test your nerves and scare yourself silly during a dark and stormy night.

A Boy and His Blob is a fun and oftentimes beautiful 2D puzzle platformer that complements other Wii efforts like Muramasa and New Super Mario Bros. very nicely. I love the hand-drawn presentation and brain-teasing challenges, all of which revolve around the blob's 15 unique transformational abilities. And some of the run and jump obstacles and boss fights are entertaining, too. That said, I don't like the die-and-retry nature of the level designs, the overly complex control scheme, WayForward's decision to ignore all Wii remote functionality, and the jarring load times between and in levels. Despite its shortcomings, Blob's got charm and style, so if you consider yourself a fan of 2D games, you'll want to check this one out, especially since it's $10 cheaper than your average Wii purchase.

Even with the problems I’ve had in my time with Spore Hero I didn’t hate the game. The adventure offered enough encouragement to plow through thanks to the fun loving creatures you encounter along the way, and the sense of customizing to turn the main character into nearly anything you want. There’s not enough outside of the adventure to keep your interest, but even with the quirks (and yes, they could get irritating) it was a fun dozen hours.

Whether or not you'll enjoy Piranha Bytes' Risen really depends on what kind of gamer you are. Though this is a more humble and user-friendly product than Gothic titles past, it's still very much a hardcore role-playing game. If you're not willing to figure some things out for yourself and the idea of freedom of choice doesn't sit well with you, chances are Risen isn't going to mesh well with your gaming sensibilities. If you're a Gothic fan, however, this is an absolute must-buy. If you're familiar with the genre and are looking to take the next step into a mature, well-realized fantasy world, then this is it. Its combat system isn't the greatest and its pacing is inconsistent, but for those who put in the time to see all Risen has to offer, it's an experience that won't be forgotten.
