I know there's a menagerie of big games on the horizon and you probably have plenty to keep yourself occupied until then, but I encourage people to give Tornado Outbreak a try. The game is forty dollars on PS3, 360 and Wii (which might be ten dollars too much), but it's still worth the money. The combination of a cute story with straight-forward, extremely rewarding gameplay makes up for the low production values of certain game elements. And, with lots of hidden goodies to find in each stage and drop-in/out local two-player, Tornado Outbreak is ultimately worth the investment. You'll get the same experience on any platform, so pick your console of choice and start saving the world... by destroying it.

Undead Knights is built on an interesting premise, but that idea isn't taken to the extremes like it should have been. The humor isn't played up enough, the controls can be problematic, it can get rather repetitive and the whole thing just isn't as polished as I would have liked to have seen. If you absolutely love zombies and their lingering walk is funny to you, then you might find something to enjoy here. Otherwise, pass on this one.

NBA Live 10, while it certainly has issues that people are going to gripe about, is exactly what the series needed to fire up its dwindling fan base and add new players alike. The gameplay is nicely refined and emulates real basketball with much greater success than past games. I expect NBA Live 11 to really step up and deliver more than this year’s game did in terms of modes. Couple some sort of career mode with the smooth gameplay and the next entry in the Live series could steal the crown away from 2K Sports.

Battle of Giants: Dragons builds a lot on the concepts from Dinosaurs. The game is more involved, and has a lot more going on, so it doesn’t get stale as fast (though it does still venture into the realm of tedium). The plot is pretty basic, but made silly by all the made up dragon language and weird growly voice acting. This is a worthy successor to Dinosaurs. The bottom line is, this is a fun game. It’s original, it’s entertaining, and it’s unbelievably dorky.

I'd love to see Alien Havoc 2: Balls to the Walls. You know, a sequel that lets loose and goes for fast-paced twitch gameplay over the sluggish pace of this release. Bite-sized games like this live or die on their addictiveness. And Alien Havoc is not addictive.

Honestly, as much as I like the new content in Fieldrunners for the PSPgo, I still prefer the iPhone version. The touch controls are just so useful for a tower defense-style game. The extra coin for Fieldrunners on the PSPgo is also an issue for me, even though it means new content not found in the existing (and much cheaper) iPhone version. If you are a new PSPgo owner that loves the TD genre but doesn’t want to pay $20 for PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe, Fieldrunners is an acceptable alternative. It’s fun. It’s challenging. It’s just not that much of a bargain.

Canabalt is a wonderful twitch game that strikes the right balance between skill and luck. It’s certainly not for everybody. Some will judge it to be too simple and move on. But there is something really compelling in here -- a real desire to play again and again... and again. And that’s not just so you can update your Twitter feed with your latest marathon sprint. Although, that’s fun, too.

The gameplay of Obscure: The Aftermath is fun to tackle with a friend, but the PSP version runs into some problems that its console predecessors didn't: it loads more awkwardly and can hurt the pacing of the experience. But at the same time, the PSP benefits from Ad-Hoc multiplayer, which allows both players to move around without screen constraints. When Obscure: The Aftermath was first released, it didn't occupy the same landscape that the PSP version now finds itself in. When you consider this competitive environment and couple it with the awful voice acting and embarrassing plotline, even the eerie environments and haunting soundtrack can't help Aftermath keep itself afloat. This is still a fun game to mess around with, especially if you and a friend get a kick out of survival-horror titles, but it's easier to recommend other co-op greats over this one.

Dragon Quest Wars may not offer the kind of epically lengthy role-playing experience that most gamers would commonly associate with its brand, but what it does offer is superb. This small, focused strategy design is like a slime-infused reimagining of the game of chess, and has just as much depth and variety as that classic board game -- or maybe more, since chess never let you determine your own lineup. And if you weren't sold before this point, it's important to note before we close that there's a good reason this grid-based strategy concept feels so at home here -- it was developed by Intelligent Systems, the same Nintendo house responsible for the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series. DSiWare, as an overall service, hasn't had an extraordinary debut this year -- but it's games like this that prove its potential. If you're at all a fan of chess, or Dragon Quest, or strategy gaming at all, spend the priced-right amount of five bucks and grab this new virtual board game. It's chess with slimes, and it'll keep your attention in check for a long time to come.

I'm a musician and I'm always looking for new portable solutions for capturing musical ideas on the go. The ideal software is easy to use, making it quick and simple to "jot down" the song you have in your head. Unfortunately, this is where Beaterator stumbles as its interface is generally confusing. It's not all Rockstar's fault –- the PSP's button interface slows down the process. Musicians are used to using music software on computers with a mouse, which allows them to input data much more quickly. Of course, you can't take Pro Tools on the bus with you, so the trade off might be worth it. You CAN make complete songs with Beaterator, it's just not as easy as it should be. It is a portable music studio for your PSP with many of the same features you find in expensive PC software for a mere $40, so that's saying a lot. But a portable music studio simply has to be easy to use, and Beaterator isn't there, yet. Although Beaterator has an impressive feature set, it's not really competing with high-end computer software. It offers two things: a simple live performance tool and a way of capturing musical ideas on the go so you can record the real deal when you get back to your home studio. When a song pops into my head I should be able to crank it out in Beaterator in a few minutes. But that's not the case -- I have to fumble through menus and wait for samples to load, stretching the process out for a half hour or more. This may be the best music studio for the PSP, but it's still not the perfect portable music studio.

In trying to create an arcade hunting experience with Big Game Hunter 2010, so much was sacrificed that you're left with only scraps of gameplay that fail to satisfy any appetite. You're funneled through wide corridors of wilderness and your prey is basically handed to you. All you need to do is make sure you're in a high percentage cover spot and aim for the heart. The thin gameplay certainly won't interest someone looking for a virtual hunting experience with an edge of authenticity, and isn't enough to entertain anyone looking for an arcade-style game with a solid hook. That being said, the game's shooting gallery mode can be fun in a Duck Hunt sort of way. It is cheaper than most retail games, however, and features some decent but flawed visuals and sound. The rest is forgettable.

Lifting the level cap breathes new life into a great game, but shouldn't totally overshadow a new series of quests that is a lot of fun. By extending the game beyond the main quest, Bethesda has delivered exactly what the fans have been asking for. Broken Steel offers more than enough reasons to justify the $10 price tag.
