The House of the Dead: Remake is an easy recommendation for hardcore fans who have been waiting decades for a better way to play it at home, but it’s a much harder sell for anyone else. The options for difficulty and scoring make it more approachable compared to the original’s harsh difficulty curve, but frustrating controls, poor gyro aiming, and some unfortunate technical issues can be scarier than the zombies themselves. There’s plenty of fun to be had with this classic if you are willing to put the time into learning its nuances, but I can’t help but feel like more could have been done to improve and refine a return I’ve been waiting decades for.

Moss: Book 2 is an exemplary sequel that provides more of what I loved about its predecessor. Building upon the original with new weapons, clever puzzles, and a vibrant storybook setting, the premise remains entertaining four years later even if none of those additions truly try to innovate on it. Its exclusive availability on the PSVR’s now noticeably outdated tech holds it back more than anything else, so I’m hoping it’ll make the jump to PC or Meta Quest in the coming months like the first Moss eventually did. But even with a Dualshock 4 in-hand, I still had a wonderful time revisiting this world and I can’t wait to see what Polyarc does next.

The key modes in MLB The Show 22 are as fun as ever, which is no surprise given that most of them haven’t changed meaningfully. Hitting, pitching, and fielding remain sublime, and another year on the newest generation of hardware has virtual ballplayers looking even better. However, technical issues are a nuisance and co-op, the most ambitious new element, is fun but unfortunately underdeveloped. The push-pull between reliable small refinements and incomplete major additions is evident, and it’s the clearest sign of the limitations an annual release can have on the series so far. MLB The Show 22 remains a very good baseball game, but it’s beginning to look like a star ballplayer on their way toward a post-prime decline.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga provides some rollicking reimaginings of Star Wars’ most iconic moments and seats them inside a series of interplanetary playgrounds that are dense with discovery and entertaining diversions. Certain elements like its upgrade and cover systems feel somewhat superfluous, and co-op has some notable drawbacks, but there were otherwise enough laugh out loud gags and surprising shifts in gameplay to keep me thoroughly engaged from the opening crawl of Episode I all the way through to the end of Episode IX – which is more than I can say for the actual movies.
