Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection was made for pinball wizards: it's a fantastic fan service of the game's recent past that puts excellent attention to the detail of the genre. It's always better to play the real machine than virtual representations of them, but this collection is a great alternative at a solid value. And these pinball machines will never wear out on you.

In fact, with IR calibration working it’s really a shame that the rest of the package isn’t as impressive. Visuals are unchanged on House of the Dead 2, we mentioned the brief slowdown issues in House of the Dead 3, but aside from that the games still only run in 4:3 display, again evidence of a quick port. The audio is unchanged as well (and classically crappy as it is, we would have thrown a fit of the corny voice acting was taken out), and in the end you’ve got the most stripped down and basic compilation out there. In fact, it’s a bit of a kick in the pants when you consider that House of the Dead 3 is the more lacking of the two games this time around, and on Xbox House of the Dead III had a special unlockable version of none other than House of the Dead 2. Not only is Return a port of two games nearly a decade old each, but a technically and visually superior version of this package already existed six years ago. SEGA has nailed IR control though, so the door is wide open for a stellar, Wii-exclusive original light gun game at this point. C’mon guys, let’s see it.

From the gossamer winged Interceptors of the Masari to the hulking crimson Walkers of the Hierarchy, Universe at War is chock full of well-designed units, structures and ideas. However, Universe's technical problems, precision control issues and hackneyed storyline dull its shine, resulting in a less-than-great RTS experience.

As the first entry in the series on the Wii, Pro Evolution 2008 is remarkable. It’s a credit to the Konami team that their solution to the Wii-mote manages to stick so readily, and it’s a sign that developers are finally beginning to un-tap the potential of the machine. Providing a free-flowing football experience like no other before it, it’s not only the best title of its sort on the Wii, but also an indicator of what’s possible for the genre as a whole when genuine innovation is applied.

We like the idea of an Animal Crossing/Nintendogs combination, but GoPets: Vacation Island isn't quite the perfect pairing we had hoped. There just isn't a lot of game there. The amount of pets is extremely limited, and there are only a handful of minigames. They did a great job on the customization options, and the ability to send your pet out and communicate globally through pictograms is awesome. If there were more game here, or if taking care of the pets required a little more effort, we'd be playing this for a while. Still, it's a new idea that can, and should, be picked up and improved by a developer. But this vacation is over far too soon.

But all of this is also available elsewhere on the Virtual Console, in packages that cost the same 800 Wii Points as this download does and don't have the same annoying drawbacks – the original R-Type is available in its TurboGrafx-16 form, and the far better SNES installment R-Type III: The Third Lightning redeemed the series' potential on Nintendo's home console a few years after Super R-Type's relative failure. I'd recommend giving this particular download a pass and choosing one of those other two R-Types instead, unless you're just a diehard fan looking for a hard time.

Ultimately, Kane's Wrath is something that old school RTS fans and die-hard C&C veterans will enjoy. There's enough here to keep them busy for a long time. Those looking for a more modern RTS experience should look elsewhere, though.

TiQal is a fairly derivative falling block game, but it matches to the target casual audience fairly well. If you’re looking for a laid back puzzler it might be worth your time to give TiQal a try. Hardcore puzzle gamers will likely find it takes too long to offer any challenge and should stick to the better alternatives on Xbox Live Arcade.

King's Knight is a poor substitute for the old-school role-playing experiences that made Square famous back in the day, so don't even worry about spending your time on it; you have better things to do, believe it.

Dark Sector's fun. Hearing guards scream for help just before they take a glaive to the face, marching around in this Metal Gear-looking Jackal tank while rocketing bad guys into the air and wielding a pimped-out shotgun make the experience something any action fan can get behind. However, when the really similar levels and waves of opponents get too repetitive towards the end of the game, Dark Sector's weak storyline might not be enough to carry the more fickle fan to the finish line. It's fun, but it's not perfect.

Short and sweet: Viking could've been great. The massive battles are a neat idea, the world can seem huge, and while simplistic, the hack-and-slash gameplay is fun for a while. Sadly, the problems in the game make sure that none of those good things can standout too proudly. The battles stumble thanks to chug, the worlds get repetitive, and when you're not really interested in the story or your ultimate goal, hack-and-slash gets on your nerves no matter how many times you cut a guy in two. There's still content here to like and enjoy, but I'd suggest sifting through it on the weekend as a rental.

Warriors Orochi is just the same Warriors experience we’ve seen for years except in portable form. I enjoyed the tag-team dynamic, even if it’s more of a novelty than anything else. All the typical problems of repetition, poor story, below average graphics and awful voice acting return once again, but the renowned Warriors button-mashing seems more fitted to quick, portable gaming sessions. There are certainly better PSP games out there, but Warriors Orochi is a fine representation of the console experience and may even surpass its predecessors by existing within a more appropriate medium.

Enough already with uninspired city builders. We actually like the genre more than most, but it's not being advanced or even showcased in Imperium Romanum. Everything here has a very paint-by-numbers feel to it and, while we're not enemies of following the traditions and conventions of the genre, there's no reason to make yet another Roman-themed city builder if you're not going to try to do it in a way that is noticeably different from the other three that are still sitting on store shelves. Imperium Romanum might possibly be worth a look if you've never played one of these games before, but for the rest of us, it's an easy one to pass up.

And it won't hold your interest long, either, making Spelunker a download that isn't really worth its asking price of 500 Wii Points at all. As a classic platformer from the early '80s, Spelunker certainly has some nostalgic value and will surely appeal to those gamers who played one of its original forms from 25 years ago. But newcomers to the experience would simply be frustrated by the control, which is nonsensically strict. It'll only take a handful of deaths coming about as a result of a five-pixel-tall vertical fall before you hit the Home Button to quit playing, and that earns Spelunker the dubious honor of joining Urban Champion, The Legend of Kage and Operation Wolf as one of the least desirable NES downloads on sale in the Wii Shop.
