What made Gears great almost 10 years ago still makes Gears great today. It’s a beautiful game with smart cover mechanics, great core combat, and commitment to an over-the-top tone. It occasionally shows signs of age, but those moments are rare enough that you’ll barely remember you’re playing a remaster. If you haven’t jumped into the series yet, or simply need a refresher, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is a great place to start.

So muss ein Remaster aussehen! Auch wenn Gears of War in der Ultimate Edition nicht mehr so frisch wirkt und technisch vom Hocker haut, wie es damals das hierzulande mittlerweile de-indizierte Original auf der 360 getan hat, überzeugt der Shooter auch auf PCs mit Windows 10 durch gelungene Mechaniken, schweißtreibende Schusswechsel, ein tolles Pacing und intuitives Deckungssystem sowie unterhaltsame Mehrspieler-Partien, von denen sich sogar manch neuere Spiele eine dicke Scheibe abschneiden könnten. Zwar hätte man abseits der Grafik auch die eine oder andere Mechanik modernisieren können, doch insgesamt kann mich das Spielgefühl von damals auch heute noch begeistern. Es macht einfach tierisch Spaß, sich durch die Feuergefechte zu beißen oder Locust mit der Kettensäge zu zerlegen. Zumal die Kampagne weiter die Bonus-Kapitel der damaligen PC-Version enthält und der Inhalt insgesamt deutlich aufgewertet wurde. Der Horde-Modus oder die Möglichkeit, wie bei den Halo-Remasters zwischen alter und neuer Grafik wechseln zu können, wären die Sahnehäubchen gewesen. Doch auch in dieser Form fetzt die Ultimate Edition und The Coalition hat bewiesen, dass Gears of War 4 bei ihnen offenbar in guten Händen ist. Schade nur, dass man der Begleiter-KI nicht mehr Gehirnzellen spendiert und in der PC-Version die sehr spaßigen Koop-Ballereien am geteilten Bildschirm einfach gestrichen hat.

Dopo la versione Xbox One, ecco arrivare l’ultima incarnazione dell’indimenticabile Gears Of War, rimasterizzata con tutti i crismi del caso. I contenuti non mancano, il multiplayer funziona ed è ancora divertente come una volta, ma ad attirare l’attenzione è ovviamente il comparto tecnico. La versione Windows PC, infatti, vanta qualche passo avanti rispetto alla sua controparte console, più un framerate sbloccato e, ovviamente, la possibilità di scegliere risoluzioni superiori al 1080p. QHD e UHD rappresentano un guadagno incredibile per la produzione ed è Inutile dire quanto questo valga da solo il prezzo del biglietto che, per la cronaca, corrisponde a 27,79€. A chi conosce il capitolo originale non dobbiamo certo spiegazioni, mentre agli altri ci sentiamo di consigliarlo senza alcuna riserva, sappiate però che, nonostante la sua buona scalabilità, per godervi appieno il piacere della sua grafica avrete bisogno di una macchina piuttosto performante. Un ultimo avvertimento è invece per gli smanettoni della Master Race e per gli estimatori della super-grafica: i primi dovranno fare i conti con un client di gestione piuttosto chiuso e limitante (non è possibile neanche registrare in concomitanza con Shadowplay), i secondi resteranno invece delusi dalla poca sostanza delle DX12. Almeno per ora, infatti, l’apporto prestazionale fornito delle nuove API Microsoft è praticamente impercepibile e se vi aspettavate framerate mai visti o una scorciatoia per l’UHD, resterete delusi.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition si conferma su PC un remake di grande valore, in grado di proporre un gameplay ancora oggi validissimo, una campagna coinvolgente e un comparto multiplayer fra i migliori in circolazione. L'impiego delle DirectX 12 avrebbe dovuto rendere questa edizione davvero "definitiva", mettendo insieme lo straordinario impatto visivo garantito dalle risoluzioni più alte e un frame rate sbloccato anche per il comparto single player, ma allo stato attuale si registrano incertezze che lasciano l'amaro in bocca e risultano difficilmente giustificabili, specie se si considerano le sproporzionate richieste hardware del gioco.

The Coalition has done great work in bringing Gears of War to a new generation, though it’s not always without its problems. Changes in general are welcome and well-executed, though some unkempt issues of the original and some compression artifacts do arise here and there. Some technical issues aside, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition is an excellent ode to the original which along with backwards compatibility for the sequels will make for an excellent opportunity for new players to introduce themselves to the franchise, along with returning players who want to re-live this classic Xbox 360 title.

I never enjoyed Gears of War the first time around, and although this iteration looks and plays beautifully, it hasn't made a convert out of me. For the Gears of War fans out there, this is probably a great pick-up and should get you drooling over Gears 4.

Ce qui aurait pu être un très bon portage se révèle finalement être un jeu certes toujours plus joli, et toujours aussi amusant, mais techniquement décevant. Si le jeu n'est pas injouable, il est tout de même dommage de ne pas pouvoir profiter de graphismes 2K ou 4K pour la simple et bonne raison que le jeu a été optimisé avec les pieds... ou que DirectX12 n'est pas encore maitrisé. Les joueurs les plus sages se limiteront donc à un affichage 1920x1080, mais même ainsi on ne peut leur promettre qu'ils bénéficieront d'un framerate stable à 60 images par seconde. Malgré ces soucis, on retrouvera avec plaisir Marcus et sa bande pour aller casser du Locuste, dans la joie et la bonne humeur. Le jeu est tout aussi complet que sur Xbox One, et propose de surcroit un mode online fonctionnel. Espérons que le jeu sera prochainement mis à jour, avant de devenir une bien mauvaise publicité pour la nouvelle stratégie gaming de Microsoft.

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition for PC is plagued with a number of issues that vastly damage the experience. The core gameplay remains untouched and the campaign, while dated, can still be a lot of fun with friends. The keyboard and mouse controls are well implemented and they can be remapped if you don’t like how they’re structured. Finally, despite having a short campaign, there’s still a fair amount to shuffle through, so long as you plan to explore the expansive online components. Unfortunately, all of that is moot if the visuals aren’t working correctly. Had things gone as planned and the PC port lived up to even the Xbox One version, then we could have had the start of something magical on our hands. There’s still a plethora of content here to enjoy if you somehow are able to look past this crippling technical issue, but unfortunately it seems the transition to the open platform has failed to live up to certain expectations.
