Firewatch is amazing for many reasons, but above all because it’s an adult game that deals with serious issues, with realistic adult dialogue to match. And it deals with those issues just like actual adults would: sometimes with humor, sometimes with anger, and sometimes with sadness. It is among the very best of the first-person narrative genre, and it reminds us what video game storytelling is capable of in the right hands. It’s a game I can see coming back to every year or two just to revisit its beautiful sights and memorable characters – just like a good book.

The physicality of your interactions, the excellent radio conversations, and poignant writing and imagery are hindered only by slight issues in presentation and technical hitching. It’s grounded, human, and one that you’ll be eager to talk about for days after the credits roll.

Firewatch is one of those games that you need to take a step back and think about after it’s over. This tense four-hour adventure might lead you to believe it’s going places it never goes, and while some might wish for a grander tale loaded with conspiracy, what’s actually there stands on its own as wonderful. A touching human story sprinkled with player agency, Firewatch succeeds in causing players to consider what it truly means to be alone. Its open-ended exploration and gorgeous visuals force players to get lost and really contemplate how along they really are, despite the voice on the other side of that radio. It’s a bit sad to think that some might be disappointed with how authentically human Firewatch is, perhaps instead hoping for a western thriller that goes all in on conspiracy. This would be, quite literally, missing the forest for the trees, as Firewatch is a joy in and of itself.

On attendait Firewatch comme un petit bijou narratif on est pas déçu. L'histoire d'Henry et de son emploi saisonnier dans le parc Yellowstone restera dans sa mémoire, et dans la notre. Les nombreux dialogues avec Delilah permettent de révéler deux personnages sensibles et humains, à tel point qu'on se met naturellement dans leur peau. Si le parc possède ses secrets que vous révélerez au fil de l'aventure, c'est peut-être ce que vous découvrirez sur vous-même qui fera du titre de Campo Santo une véritable découverte. Sans doute plus adapté aux trentenaires qu'aux adolescents, fait rare dans le jeu vidéo y compris dans les autres jeux narratifs, Firewatch fait partie de ces expériences que l'on oublie pas de sitôt.

Les médisants parleront de simulateur de promenade. J’irais plus loin que ça en décrétant que Firewatch est un formidable simulateur de randonnée en pleine nature. L’orientation et le système de dialogue extrêmement bien pensé donnent une base de jeu finalement très solide à un titre à la narration très poussée. La durée de vie me laisse dire que le prix actuel est peut-être un poil excessif pour le moment, mais si vous vous laissez tenter, vous ne regretterez ni le voyage, ni le séjour. Firewatch est une escapade estivale enveloppée de mystère et de mélancolie. Au cœur de l’hiver, il n’y a rien de plus délicieux.

Pur con alcune sbavature, Firewatch è un titolo in grado di lasciarti qualcosa, basta avere la sensibilità per coglierlo. Ci sono momenti in cui la luce filtra tra i rami del bosco, tagliando l'aria con mille innocue lame, che non possono non muovere qualcosa dentro, altri in cui il dialogo fra i due personaggi tocca temi che inevitabilmente fanno scattare paralleli agrodolci. Non è un gioco per tutti e molto dipende dal background di chi lo gioca ma se pensate che i videogiochi possano essere "qualcos'altro", dovete assolutamente darci un'occhiata. E se alla fine pensate che tutto ciò che avete fatto non ha avuto alcun senso, be'... sappiate che così è la vita.

Raramente mi sono trovato tanto in difficoltà nel valutare un gioco. Firewatch mi ha completamente rapito, abbracciandomi con i suoi colori e la sua atmosfera e intorpidendomi con i suoi dialoghi. Forse ha funzionato tutto così bene, finché ha funzionato, proprio perché dura quel che dura. Forse se il conteggio delle ore fosse stato raddoppiato, la struttura così esile avrebbe prima scricchiolato e poi sarebbe crollata sotto i colpi della prevedibilità e di un po' di noia. Mi aspettavo molto da Firewatch e probabilmente mi aspettavo qualcosa di diverso, un gioco che fosse più tradizionale e "giocoso". Ma è giusto solo valutare quel che è e non quel che mi sarei aspettato: Firewatch è un piccolo racconto, non sempre convincente al massimo, ma solo perché si concentra sul lato umano delle faccende. E anche questa è una scelta coraggiosa.

Ad un certo momento, durante l'avventura di Firewatch, Henry trova una macchina fotografica. È una vecchia macchina usa e getta, di quelle che forse non esistono più. Si può usare per immortalare qualche scorcio particolarmente evocativo: un drappo rosso impigliato su un ramo, la sagoma di un albero ormai spoglio sovrastata da un sole cocente, il letto roccioso di un vecchio torrente. Alla fine del gioco avremo accumulato una manciata di scatti decenti. Opzione esclusiva della versione PC, Firewatch permette di farsi inviare una stampa di queste foto. Acquistarle viene quasi naturale, e probabilmente questo vuol dire molto. Vuol dire che in qualche modo Firewatch ti resta dentro, ti lascia qualcosa. Magari solo grazie a pochi attimi: una corsa disperata in un momento di destabilizzante insicurezza, o una chiamata notturna di Delilah, illuminata dalla luce irreale di un incendio inesauribile. Magari è grazie alle note ora tenui ora intense della colonna sonora, o al momento in cui scopriamo il segreto conservato nelle viscere rocciose del parco. Firewatch è come un breve racconto in cui si intrecciano romanticismo e mistero, sciupato in parte da un finale frettoloso e sbrigativo. Non giocatelo per la sua dimensione avventurosa, o per il miraggio di un'esplorazione che quasi non c'è: i sentieri da percorrere sono delineati e costrittivi, il racconto è l'unica forza trascinante della produzione Campo Santo. Provatelo se vi incuriosisce la narrazione interattiva, i drammi interiori, il valore estetico del paesaggio. Non sarà un'esperienza capace di cambiarvi la vita, ma vi lascerà r

Firewatch could have, and should have, been so much better than it is. You can see the greatness shrivel up like a dying flower when the mystery elements are introduced, and it’s heartbreaking. On brief occasions that greatness peaks through the mediocrity, but that only makes everything else more disappointing.

En somme, Firewatch est une réussite presque totale. Nous sommes en face d’une aventure narrative prenante et loin d’être ennuyeuse. A chaque nouvelle étape, nous voulons progresser et en apprendre plus sur l’histoire de nos protagonistes, aidés par une immersion quasiment parfaite. Le rendu graphique, le rendu sonore et le gameplay simple mais efficace contribuent sans cesse à nous immerger dans cet univers envoûtant et même parfois, un peu stressant. Clairement, on peut vous garantir que vous ne regretterez pas le voyage si vous savez à quoi vous attendre. Cela dit, si vous attendiez une histoire plus longue, nous vous conseillerions peut-être d’attendre une petite baisse de prix, compte tenu de la durée de vie un peu chiche du soft.

There’s a lot of talent at Campo Santo working on Firewatch, but the team’s first effort struggles to find its legs. It doesn’t quite have the writing chops to be a strong mystery, and it doesn’t bring the gameplay chops to make you feel like you’re an integral part of it. As a character drama, it lands closer to the mark, but spends too much time meandering in the woods. Firewatch comes off more as an experiment than a fulfilling game, and despite being beautiful and often compelling, it mostly smolders rather than catching flame.
