Rage 2 débarque fusil à pompe en mains pour tout arracher. Le titre né de la collaboration entre id Software et Avalanche Studios soigne la majorité des carences de son aîné et parvient à fusionner monde ouvert et fast FPS avec un talent certain. Loin d'être exempt de défauts, ce titre possède indubitablement une âme qui transcende l'expérience vécue. Intense, survoltée, irrévérencieuse, brutale… les adjectifs ne manquent pas pour qualifier cette apocalypse fushia pétrie de bonnes intentions.

With its large open world and vast array of upgrades to earn, Rage 2 feels very much like an antidote for Far Cry fans who have overdosed on that particular style and want a new take on the large-scale shooter-RPG idea. Though Avalanche hasn’t quite figured out what makes a world feel alive and dynamic or how to make good use of its vehicles, it absolutely nails the moment-to-moment combat thanks to a Doom-inspired energetic pace that few shooters manage to pull off. Combined with a steady stream of great weapons, abilities, and upgrades, its firefights are constantly reinvigorated even as mission objectives become repetitive.

Rage 2 destaca sobre todo cuanto más se parece a Doom. Hay ciertos tiroteos en los que estás como pez en el agua moviéndote de aquí para allá repartiendo balas con un gunplay magnífico a la vez que aplastas o trituras a los enemigos con tus habilidades especiales de nanotritos. Si hubiera sido un FPS más clásico, más lineal, seguramente sobresaldría más de lo que lo hace en la práctica, porque este buen sabor de boca se diluye en las insulsas actividades de mundo abierto, que rara vez consiguen sorprendernos o satisfacernos. Nos quedará para siempre la duda sobre lo que habría sido este proyecto puramente desarrollado por id Software, algo que Bethesda paralizó en favor del reboot de Doom, pues claramente la balanza sobre las cosas buenas de Rage 2 se decantan de ese lado.

Rage 2 is ugly, silly, and dated, and yet, I still enjoyed the hell out of most of my time with it. The game delivers the kind of low-stress, high-satisfaction fun you don’t often get from big-budget games these days. If you’re willing to check your brain at the title screen, I suggest you jump into this apocalypse now.

Avec son monde ouvert particulièrement vaste et sa montagne d’améliorations à obtenir, Rage 2 s’apparente à un antidote pour les habitués de la licence Far Cry ayant fait une indigestion du style proposé et souhaitant s’essayer à un FPS à grande échelle doté d’éléments RPG qui propose une approche différente. Bien qu’Avalanche n’ait pas parfaitement saisi ce qui rendait un monde ouvert vivant et dynamique, ou comment rendre les phases en véhicule plus trépidantes, son dernier titre propose des affrontements intenses dans la droite lignée de Doom, composante que bien peu de jeux du genre peuvent se targuer de posséder. En dépit d’objectifs de mission devenant rapidement répétitifs, ses combats sont constamment revigorés par un arsenal en constante évolution et un nombre impressionnant de capacités et d’améliorations.

RAGE 2 è un videogioco con due anime, che id Software e Avalanche Studios hanno pensato bene (si fa per dire…) di sviluppare a compartimenti stagni, senza troppe correlazioni l’uno con l’altro. Da un lato uno sparatutto che riabbraccia finalmente le sue origini old school e ci regala un distillato di esplosioni, azione e smembramenti che sarebbe stato impossibile replicare in maniera ancor più violenta ed esagerata, con armi e abilità fuori di testa e potenziabili a livelli talmente sfacciati ed esagerati da sembrare quasi inverecondi. Dall’altro, un videogioco che se forse avrebbe potuto limitarsi a scimmiottare DOOM con un po’ di libertà in più, è voluto andare ben oltre, implementando il solito sistema “à la Avalanche” (con tanto di completa sostituzione dell’ engine grafico), ormai un marchio di fabbrica dello studio svedese nell’ambito dei videogiochi open world, nel bene e nel male. Sta soltanto a voi decidere come giocarlo, se privilegiando il gameplay o tutto il resto: nel primo caso vi ritroverete davanti uno shooter vecchio stampo con tutti i crismi del caso, viscerale e divertente, sebbene minato da una storia non proprio indimenticabile, nel secondo avrete a che fare con un enorme parco giochi, realizzato in maniera un po’ grossolana e immatura, oltre che incapace di sbocciare a dovere. La scelta, a ben guardare, non è poi tanto difficile.

Rage 2’s main drawbacks sit with its uninteresting story and its awkward, convoluted structure of progression. If you’ve both the forgiveness and the patience to overlook all of that, a shooter that deals in explosive action and sheer depth awaits. Rage 2 is all about having a mindless blast, and between its vastly varied combat, its interesting world, and its diverse gameplay, it certainly delivers on that front, and then some.

Even with its shortcomings, Rage 2 is super fun. If you're excited for Doom Eternal, Rage 2 will be the perfect appetizer as you wait for that game. It's like someone mixed a bunch of powerful drugs together with what can only be described as FPS porn and said: "Inject this into your veins". It's endlessly gratifying to play but may lack the substance some gamers require in a AAA game released in 2019 via story and open-world longevity.

Es cierto que le he dado bastante cera a Rage 2, pero es porque hay un elemento fantástico que se ve lastrado por todo lo demás. El combate me encanta, y me lo he pasado en grande en todos los tiroteos que no eran contra jefes finales, al hacerme sentir como un súper héroe de un futuro post-apocalíptico como ningún otro juego. Vale que no llegue al nivel de grandeza de DOOM en sus tiroteos (por la variedad de armas y enemigo básicamente), pero es increíblemente divertido. Por desgracia, todo lo que no es el combate es genérico o mediocre: el mundo abierto está lleno de actividades clónicas sin casi nada que hacer entre ellas, la búsqueda del tesoro rompe por completo el ritmo de la acción, las persecuciones son sosas, la historia es inexistente y la progresión es demasiado compleja para un título de estas características. ¿Es Rage 2 un mal juego? En absoluto, ya que su combate hace que se disfrute enormemente y nos lo podamos pasar en grande. Sin embargo, es también una oportunidad perdida para encumbrar la saga o sencillamente, ofrecer una gran combinación de acción y mundo abierto. Desde id Software dicen que quieren trabajar en la tercera parte, y si es así, igual deberían de plantearse hacer una entrega lineal que profundice en lo que ya hace bien esta secuela, porque si tu mundo abierto es un Yermo a nivel de diseño, igual va siendo hora de que sea destruido por un meteorito.

RAGE 2 held plenty of potential, but even considering how great the combat is, falls well short of that goal. The sequel is hampered by the same issues that cropped up in the original. The campaign is a non-factor and the open-world needed more life in it. Third time's the charm?

Even after 8 years, the Rage series is still having an identity crisis. It has all the signifiers of an open-world game, but it lacks the overall narrative that makes the world compelling, and its best bits—that is, its gunfights—take places in either small, complexly designed arenas or in hallways, like a linear shooter. The greatest irony about Rage 2 is that it might have been an even better, more interesting game if it was more like the first game with a fresh coat of (pink) paint. What it is now is just a bunch of sound and fury, which can be fun for a while, but it’s ultimately an empty experience.

Loin d’être un mauvais jeu, RAGE 2 souffre clairement du manque d’ambition du studio à la tête du projet. Un manque d’ambition peut-être lié à un manque de temps ou de budget, mais le problème reste entier pour le joueur. Confronté à un open world, ce dernier ne peut jamais pleinement en profiter car cet univers sonne souvent creux. À aucun moment, les scénaristes ne parviennent à nous faire vibrer et si le charisme de certains personnages secondaires semble faire mouche… rien n’est jamais développé. Heureusement, RAGE 2 peut se reposer sur le punch de ses combats et sur les sensations que l’on ressent flingues en main. À ce niveau, id Software est incontestablement le maître et on donnerait cher pour le voir travailler en collaboration avec Rockstar (monde ouvert) et Obsidian (écriture).

À trop vouloir en faire, Rage 2 a noyé son excellent gameplay dans un désert de médiocrité. Pas aidé par sa narration à la Just Cause (c’est-à-dire risible) et son architecture à la Far Cry (c’est-à-dire générique), le jeu de Bethesda bâcle sa proposition et ne sera qu’un défouloir comme il y en a déjà tant. À l’arrivée, Rage 2 est bien parti pour connaître le même destin que son prédécesseur : vite se faire oublier. Un univers acide et une prise en main généreuse ne font pas tout. Associer deux studios spécialistes non plus. Et le monde (ouvert) ne suffit pas.
