Dragon’s Crown benefits from its smart structure and pacing, something Kamitani’s struggled with in the past. He’s always been a chef of note, cooking unusual and distinctive dishes like Odin Sphere, but his previous games have been flawed in one way or another. Sphere was beautiful but bloated. Princess Crown was elegant, but it was often difficult to figure out what to do (and that’s on top of it only being available in Japanese.) Vanillaware’s art is awash in life. Every character portrait literally heaves, with detail lines expanding and contracting, making something hand drawn seem alive. Even simple things like the level select map are more detailed and surreally beautiful than many whole games. The writing overflows with humor and strange asides, like one Monty Python-inspired boss that shouldn’t be spoiled and a stat-boosting cooking mini-game between stages. From this point on Dragon’s Crown is Kamitani’s signature dish. And it is delicious.

BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us are incredible games, but this has easily secured my vote for 2013‘s game of the year. Dragon’s Crown is a masterpiece. The gameplay is simple enough for casual play but offers deep components to compliment it for those who want more from their games on both single and multiplayer levels. RPG and action fans alike will easily get lost in this magnificent world for hundreds of hours. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that it just might be the most beautiful video game I have ever seen.

Dragon's Crown è dotato di una carica irresistibile e per stile svetta sia all'interno del panorama attuale del mercato dei videogiochi, sia al di sopra delle già invidiabili precedenti produzioni di Vanillaware. Il gameplay si assimila rapidamente e si può scendere in battaglia senza particolare strategia, puntando a premere i pulsanti ritmicamente per abbattere gli avversari, a tutto vantaggio di ogni tipologia di videogiocatore. Solo successivamente si noteranno i tecnicismi che il sistema di combattimento nasconde ed emergeranno poco alla volta soprattutto progredendo nei livelli e sbloccando nuove abilità, che necessitano di tempismo e manualità superiori. Gli ambienti sono evocativi e perfettamente realizzati al pari dei personaggi, anche se in numero non troppo esteso, fattore che porterà ad affrontarli più volte, spesso con obiettivi secondari non del tutto originali ma in grado di modificare leggermente gli approcci alle battaglie, offrendo in cambio esperienza e nuovi oggetti, utilissimi per proseguire nella storia principale. La main quest offre del resto un livello di difficoltà accessibile ma non banale, soprattutto nelle sezione più avanzate. Dragon's Crown è quindi un tuffo nel passato con gli occhi ben saldi al presente, che tutti potranno apprezzare grazie alla sua accessibilità di base e che andrebbe affrontato con i propri amici, in modo da godere al massimo delle eccezionali trovate del team. Insomma: Dragon's Crown fa propria l'eredità di un'epoca antica: una formula di gioco ormai quasi sparita nelle produzioni più recenti, ma che mai come in questo caso si dimostra ancora viva, vegeta e assolutamente agguerrita.

Da Shank a Castle Crashers, la scena indie ha provato più volte a riproporre l'esperienza dei vecchi beat'em up a scorrimento orizzontale, ma Dragon's Crown è probabilmente il primo a riportare davvero il genere al passo coi tempi, sia da un punto di vista artistico che di gameplay. L'ultimo gioco di Vanillaware non è soltanto un omaggio ai tempi che furono, né un semplice calderone pieno di citazioni, cameo e riferimenti, ma un'esperienza profonda, frenetica e di un certo spessore strategico. E questo sia che lo si giochi in compagnia di qualche amico, sia che ci si affidi all'intelligenza artificiale. Senza dubbio il punto più alto raggiunto finora dal team di Kamitani.

Si le design volontairement grotesque de ces personnages aura pu vous faire rire, il ne faut pas qu'il cache le génie artistique de Dragon's Crown. Ces décors 2D et son design général vous transportent dans un autre monde du début à la fin. Une aventure qui transpire le travail soigné ponctuée par un gameplay frénétique, un challenge évolutif, de nombreux boss et la possibilité de jouer à quatre. Tout simplement excellent !

Dragon’s Crown ist das Ergebnis, wenn man klassische 2D-Brawler vom Schlage eines Final Fight oder Golden Axe mit der Jäger-und-Sammler-Motivation eines Diablo kreuzt und das Ganze in ein unglaublich schönes Artdesign verpackt. Die handgezeichneten Figuren und Schauplätze sind immer wieder ein Hingucker – auch wenn es mit gerade mal neun Abschnitten (immerhin mit A-/B-Varianten) ein nicht gerade üppiges Angebot an Kulissen gibt, durch die man sich kämpft. Die Auseinandersetzungen sind angenehm hektisch und gut zu kontrollieren. Allerdings gleitet das Hacken & Slayen bei großer Gegneranzahl und explosiven Effekten mitunter von der Hektik ins absolute Chaos – wobei es nur selten dazu kommt, dass man in diesen Momenten ein Ableben zu beklagen hat. Zwar gibt es keine besonderen Team-Angriffe, doch wer nach Diablo 3 auf der Suche nach einer weiteren unterhaltsamen Koop-Action ist und sich dem Sog von Figurenentwicklung sowie immer besserer Beute nicht entziehen kann, wird hier auf lange Sicht ebenfalls glücklich.

Jugabilidad clásica con toques actuales y un aspecto simplemente soberbio. Dragon´s Crown es un juego excelente con solo un par de aristas por puliar para merecer ser recordado como los mejores de su género (hilo argumental lento, sin cross-play o cross-buy.etc). Sorprende que un título de esta calidad se quedara casi sin ser publicado hace solo unos meses...

Dragon’s Crown is about to put Vanillaware on the map. Whether on PlayStation 3 or PS Vita, it’s an enjoyable and deep old-school romp with an incredible amount of charm and an even higher amount of replay value. The experience is virtually identical on PS3 and Vita, but if you absolutely, positively only want to buy one, I’d go for the PlayStation 3 version, as its chaotic action is more readable and better appreciated on the big screen. While it’s puzzling why Dragon’s Crown is only cross-save and not cross-buy or cross-play, that doesn’t reduce its astounding production values and addictive gameplay. It’s incredible that something this good almost never came out, but it was absolutely worth the wait.
