Controlling Rei in Solar Ash’s beautiful world is an absolute joy, with fluid, precise, and simple controls as well as a diverse set of challenges to overcome. Unfortunately, there are more than a few moments where the normally excellent level design suddenly becomes tedious and annoying.

Riche d’une aura singulière et de délicieuses traversées, Solar Ash abrite un univers qui doit s’apprivoiser avec patience pour être pleinement apprécié ; entre les balades si confortables s’érigent quelques grandes difficultés à surmonter. De fond en comble, les régions cosmiques et complexes bâties par Heart Machine donnent envie d’être pleinement fouillées. Dommage que chaque nouveau panorama découvert abrite des objectifs qui manquent souvent de nous dépayser.

Solar Ash è molte cose, ma di certo non può venir definito un passo falso. La seconda opera di Heart Machine è un titolo artisticamente eccelso, dotato di un gameplay molto solido e ricco d'idee brillanti. Il design che ne sorregge le membra non è sempre impeccabile, ma non bastano qualche "spezzata" di ritmo un po' forzata e una narrativa alquanto banale a rovinare l'esperienza. Comunque consigliato, e un ottima dimostrazione di talento che lascia ben sperare per il futuro del team.

Solar Ash è innegabilmente un prodotto figlio dell'ambizione e della visione artistica di Alx Preston e del suo team, i quali, piuttosto che adagiarsi sugli allori garantiti dall'ottimo lavoro d'esordio, hanno preferito osare, cambiando totalmente genere e regalando al pubblico qualcosa di diverso. Purtroppo, non tutto è venuto bene quanto cinque anni fa, ma il risultato finale è ugualmente ammirevole, seppur per motivi profondamente diversi dalla prima volta: la sensazione di libertà quando si controlla Rei è impagabile, la direzione artistica nuovamente fuori parametro e la colonna sonora merita le lodi più sperticate. D'altro canto, siamo rimasti un po' delusi dall'estrema semplicità del combat system, dal livello di difficoltà calmierato rispetto ad Hyper Light Drifter e dall'eccessiva somiglianza del prodotto ad alcune delle sue (dichiarate) fonti di ispirazione. Siamo comunque dinanzi ad una buona seconda prova per Heart Machine Games, e siamo curiosi di vedere cosa riserverà questo talentuoso manipolo di sviluppatori nel prossimo futuro.

Solar Ash pushes for a sense of momentum and fluidity with its take on 3D platforming, and it does work very well indeed. Rei's controls and abilities give the game a sense of ease, making it feel very gratifying simply moving through the game's world. While the main quest doesn't really evolve the challenge, and the picturesque environments can feel somewhat empty, the traversal at the heart of everything does about enough to carry you through to a satisfying conclusion. It's an ambitious second effort from Heart Machine that mostly sticks the landing.

Solar Ash is a visually pleasing adventure that pulls you in quickly with its swift and elegant movement mechanics and a snazzy synth soundtrack. Despite the strong start, the experience begins to lose its grip the longer it goes, with unreliable performance and mundane combat.

Solar Ash hinges itself upon two core mechanics -- and almost nothing else. Skating around and dispelling corrupted masses of black goo is fun for a while, but when you've seen a game's whole hand in the first half-hour, it's a little hard to stay on board for the remainder.
