All things considered, Black Knight Sword is truly a one-of-a-kind experience thanks to its imaginative art direction, soundtrack, narrative and overall concept. For $9.99, those qualities might be enough to warrant a purchase. Sadly, the game often feels like a case of style over substance, which is something Suda 51 has struggled with all along. The lack of actual gameplay innovation means all the other interesting, superficial aspects are negligible. The merciless difficulty might pull in some gamers who dig that tough-as-nails design approach, but those who like to just enjoy their experience without being punished at every turn may want to get their fill elsewhere. “Obscure” is one of the most fitting words to sum up Grasshopper Manufacture and Digital Reality’s tag team effort. “Unique” is another one to use. Unfortunately, “flawed” also comes to mind. As it stands, Black Knight Sword is just an average sidescroller with an attractive window dressing.

Nein, ich schäme mich nicht, nach dem gefühlt tausendsten Versuch auf dem Standard-Schwierigkeitsgrad schließlich einen Neuanfang auf „Leicht“ gemacht zu haben, um mir die Levelstrukturen einzuprägen. Ebenso wenig kann ich Suda 51 dafür hassen, dass er meine Nerven so strapaziert. Mitunter geht mir der Schwierigkeitsgrad zwar deutlich über das hinaus, was man leichthin als „ausgewogen, aber fordernd“ bezeichnend. Doch letztlich habe ich in den letzten Jahren lauthals „schwere“ Spiele gefordert. Und genau das ist Black Knight Sword, das als unehelicher Spross von MegaMan bzw. Ghosts‘n Goblins auf der einen Seite und Monty Pytoneskem Humor auf der anderen durchgehen könnte. Erzählerisch belanglos sind es die konsequent umgesetzte Retro-Mechanik mit allen assoziierten Vorzügen und Nachteilen sowie vor allem das fantasievolle Artdesign mit seinen Papierzeichnungen, die mich trotz allen Fluchens bei der Stange gehalten haben. Das kann allerdings nicht darüber hinweg täuschen, dass der Umfang mit gerade mal fünf Abschnitten nicht allzu üppig ausgefallen ist und man inhaltlich bei Weitem nicht so kreativ ist wie bei der audiovisuellen Umsetzung.

Inventive storytelling blends with some of the most bizarre sights you'll experience in a 2D platformer to make Black Knight Sword a real gem on the presentation front. It's deliciously weird from start to finish, but that weirdness only partially distracts from the repetitious, uninspiring gameplay and brutal difficulty. For a game that's so strongly unique, Black Knight Sword sadly bleeds out much of its charm through a few gaping flaws.

Una forma de contar historias de lo más original que además se complementa a la perfección con algunas de las criaturas más raras que hemos experimentado en un juego de plataformas en 2D. Esto hace de Black Knight Sword una piedra preciosa en lo que se refiere a presentación. Es deliciosamente extraño de principio a fin, pero esta rareza solo nos distraerá parcialmente de la repetitiva y poco inspirada jugabilidad -y de su brutal dificultad-. Para ser un juego que es tan distinto a todo, Black Knight Sword se desangra tristemente por su múltiples fallos.

Dirigé par un marionnettiste de renom (Suda 51) et par une équipe d'accessoiristes inspirés (Digital Reality), Black Knight Sword est un anti-conte de fées doté d'une identité visuelle forte, qui exploite à merveille l'étrangeté du théâtre japonais. Mais sous le masque absurde et dérangeant de ce spectacle extravagant, se cache un gameplay bien trop conventionnel, qui finit par susciter une certaine lassitude – assez pour condamner ce jeu de plates-formes à une apparition éphémère, avant que ne retombe le cruel rideau de l'oubli.

Le petit conte dérangeant Black Knight Sword, mis en scène par les Hongrois de Digital Reality et où Suda51 tire les ficelles, propose un univers qui, et c'est une performance en soi aujourd'hui, n'a jamais été vu ailleurs. Intriguant, on demanderait toujours à voir plus de ce monde étrange si seulement les mécanismes de jeu du titre étaient plus étoffés. On nous parle d'hommage aux jeux d'action / plateforme des ères 8 et 16 bits ; j'y vois plutôt un manque d'imagination en décalage total avec une direction artistique si inspirée. Si le voyage vaut le coup, le chemin a emprunter n'est pas forcément très confortable. Dommage, en cela le titre demeurera anecdotique.
