Despite a relatively enjoyable gameplay loop, Dig or Die doesn’t have enough content to keep it engaging for long. Dull visuals and occasionally frustrating controls add to a game that shows promise but is ultimately a disappointment.

I want to give Still Wakes the Deep all the credit it deserves for its fantastic art, dialogue, voiceover work, and setting. But it's frustrating to play with its nearly on-rails structure that actively scoffs at the idea of exploration. And as much as I wanted to be freaked out by it, I almost never was, trying as I might to set the mood as best as possible. It's the kind of game where I think watching someone else play through it and playing it yourself would be nearly identical experiences, and that doesn't make it easy for me to recommend.

Still Wakes the Deep è un enigma: un'avventura narrativa con un debole per i survival horror passivi, che però risulta incapace di esprimere i valori che ci si aspetterebbe da The Chinese Room a ben undici anni da Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. La storia sembra una rielaborazione in salsa scozzese di Dead Space e il gameplay non è che un insieme di espedienti messi lì per raccontarla, ma con poca voglia e meno ancora coraggio. La storia ha un picco sul finale, ma ci si arriva un po' troppo in fretta e senza idee originali: che peccato.

Clocking in at around five or six hours, Still Wakes the Deep doesn’t overstay its welcome. The emotional narrative is well paced, well written and excellently performed, and has a satisfying ending, even if it is confusing at times. But that’s all part of its Lovecraftian appeal, and there’s no doubt that the setting plays a large part in creating that unnerving feeling that lingers like the eldritch horrors of Beira D. Unfortunately, the generic gameplay and over reliance on platforming, as well as the limited scare factor does hold it back a little, but fans of first-person horrors should definitely check this one out at some stage.

Still Wakes the Deep è un'avventura horror che nella sua completa linearità funziona: racconta una storia tragica, spogliata di complotti o spiegazioni contorte per mostrarsi in tutto il proprio orrore. I personaggi sono persone semplici e umanissime nella loro disperazione, rese ancora più verosimili da un ottimo doppiaggio. In diverse occasioni saremo chiamati a sopravvivere tanto alle creature che popolano Beira D quanto ai pericoli strutturali propri di una piattaforma in procinto di affondare, il che distanzia il gioco da una semplice esperienza walking simulator in chiave horror. Lato gameplay c'è poca carne al fuoco soprattutto per quanto riguarda le fasi nascondino per superare le creature quasi tutte identiche tra loro, ma le meccaniche si sposano comunque abbastanza bene con l'impianto narrativo. Nel complesso, anche solo per l'ambientazione singolare e per un orrore che non cerca spiegazioni, mostrandosi nella sua crudità, Still Wakes the Deep è un gioco che senza reinventare la ruota sa offrire un'esperienza interessante.

Still Wakes the Deep è il più classico dei walking simulator. Si tratta di un horror psicologico dai sistemi di gioco striminziti, sin troppo basilari, con interazioni comandate, strade sempre guidate e nessuna reale sfida per il giocatore. Trattandosi di un titolo fortemente orientato alla narrazione, con una storia che funziona piuttosto bene e un'idea di base da manuale dell'horror, tutte queste scelte a monte potrebbero essere comprensibili; ma se al di là del comparto tecnico non si notano differenze con un gioco del 2010, allora è evidente come le mancanze siano sin troppe per chi aveva l'intenzione di ripresentarsi sul mercato con ben altre ambizioni.
