Rise of the Ronin marries a cool historical setting, Team Ninja’s mastery of tough-but-fair combat, and some smart RPG design to make a game that is immediately compelling, and even more fun with friends. It’s full of cool little touches, whether it’s throwing something at an enemy with the grappling rope or dropping from your glider onto your horse. Unfortunately, it’s also a game full of map clutter, bloated systems, and a truly absurd amount of junk loot, and the time I spent clearing out everything that didn’t spark joy and dealing with all these non-essential systems made me pine for a leaner, meaner, more focused game. Rise of the Ronin is excellent when it has the courage to be itself and lean into its challenging, rewarding fighting; too often, however, it feels stuck in indecision, torn between what it wants to be and what it feels it’s expected to be, and not even the best samurai can overcome that.

Rise of the Ronin is a case where more isn't always better. It's got varied and challenging combat, a wealth of content, and a wide variety of mechanics in a story that spans over a decade. But while most of the individual components work, many feel unrefined, and their sheer volume doesn't elevate the experience.

Rise of the Ronin è un gioco che, almeno sotto certi aspetti, va incontrato a metà strada. Il nuovo action RPG di Team Ninja vanta una mole impressionante di contenuti, e può contare su un sistema di combattimento ben congegnato e una storia che mette in mostra una maturità mai raggiunta prima dallo studio giapponese, mai stellare, ma comunque ben scritta e godibile dall'inizio alla fine. È un gioco che non reinventa nulla, a volte un po' ingenuo, e che soffre a causa di qualche problema tecnico di troppo, ma anche realizzato da un team che, nel corso dei nove anni di sviluppo che hanno preceduto la pubblicazione, è chiaramente cresciuto, tanto da realizzare un'esperienza che si vive meglio di come si racconta. Rise of the Ronin non spodesta Nioh 2 dal trono che sovrasta ogni altri gioco realizzato da Team Ninja, né verrà ricordato per la sua grafica o la struttura del suo mondo di gioco, ma è comunque in grado di offrire tante ore di divertimento, senza eccessivi compromessi.

Si uno no tiene cuidado con una afilada katana, se arriesga a cortarse. Por suerte, Rise of the Ronin desenvaina de forma certera gracias a un combate sublime y a una historia muy atractiva para los amantes del Japón más samurái. Hay carencias importantes, pero Team Ninja realiza un corte mucho más preciso de lo imaginado con este ambicioso juego.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 es, a su vez, muy parecido al primer juego y también distinto. Sus valores siguen ahí, así como la forma de luchar, pero se ha expandido con una forma de explorar este nuevo mundo mucho más orgánica y libre. Casi nada está marcado en el mapa, sobre todo en cuanto a las misiones secundarias, lo que hace en muchas ocasiones que sea tu ingenio y curiosidad lo que te haga descubrir sus historias y también resolverlas. Su combate sigue siendo la mejor parte, lleno de enfrentamientos épicos contra criaturas gigantescas y la orografía del mundo está muy lograda. Pero sí, sigue siendo un juego que no atraerá todas las miradas. Es austero en lo narrativo y en su presentación, pero eso no me importa tanto cuando lo apuesta todo por la experiencia emergente. Sin embargo, no logra evitar algo de repetición y tedio en su segunda mitad, que es menos fresca. Aún así, va a ser uno de los juegos que más recuerde este año, por su capacidad para sorprender y confíar en mí como jugador en vez de llevarme de la mano. Así se forjan las buenas aventuras.

Princess Peach: Showtime! is more closely aligned with Kirby and Yoshi’s simple, cheery romps rather than Mario’s polished platformers and Luigi’s haunted mansions. There’s fun to be found in the Sparkle Theater, as these delightfully simplified takes on some of gaming’s most popular genres are entertaining to blast through, and the whimsical stage play aesthetic gives Peach’s game an identity all its own. I’m also thrilled that Nintendo is finally giving Peach another crack at her own solo outing after nearly two decades, and I hope this is the start of an ongoing spinoff series within the wider Mario universe. Some noticeable performance issues and the frustrating lack of a chapter select means I won’t be returning for an encore, and I wish there were a few extra levels to lengthen the somewhat brief campaign, but Nintendo and Princess Peach at least know how to put on a good show.
