That said, some people will absolutely detest Disaster: Day of Crisis. It’s an awkward combination of extremes -- old-school adventuring burdened with new-fangled mini-game sensibilities; abstract game mechanics wrestled into a single plot- driven narrative; sometimes lackluster visuals and pacing thoroughly at odds with that bombastic spectacle and massive ambition. It’s also fundamentally shallow, remarkably inconsistent and chronically naff. Like the disaster movies it takes inspiration from though, Day of Crisis is ultimately more than the sum of its parts. When it works, it’s a relentless, thrilling assault on your senses; a huge grin of game. And when it doesn’t, when it starts to wobble precariously on its own flimsy parts, it’s still compulsive in its creativity, inexplicable in its uniqueness and, most importantly, one thoroughly fun ride.

Naruto: Path of the Ninja 2 is an admirable attempt to offer a Naruto- branded video game that isn't a fighter, or an action/adventure, or a fighter/action/adventure cross-over. And it makes improvements over last year's first Path of the Ninja by offering a greater variety of playable characters and a new story that isn't a repeat of a plotline already seen in the anime. Where the game falls short, though, is in its still-too-severe reliance on dated role-playing conventions. The random battles, uninteresting overworld exploration and lack of innovation in gameplay design beyond the expected, brief touch screen mini-games all keep it from rising anywhere above the range of "fair" as an RPG. Diehard fans of the series will enjoy it, as they've enjoyed the wealth of other products featuring the grinning face of the No. 1 knucklehead ninja over the past three years. But the rest of the DS owning crowd has far better role-playing experiences to look to on Nintendo's handheld, and shouldn't worry about walking down this Path.

Golden Axe is the latest classic SEGA franchise to disappoint on new hardware, and we can't help but think it's a huge wasted opportunity.

The Pro Evolution franchise has been going for some time now but has never really been established as the superior football game behind Fifa. Although it brings better gameplay, more forms of play, and maybe even better looking when it comes to graphics in the PC and PS3 versions, it still seems that the licensing that Fifa has overrules each and every good aspect that Pro Evo has to offer for the majority population. When I found out that there was going to be a Pro Evolution game on the Nintendo Wii I thought that would either be as rubbish to play as it's Fifa counterpart which was created, or far superior to it. I don't know why I ever doubted the idea.

Spider-Man fans will likely still get a lot of fun from the game because of the decent treatment of the main man, but he really needed better material to work with in order to have a broader appeal.

Quest'anno i due più acerrimi rivali nel campo delle simulazioni di hockey su ghiaccio (NHL 2K9 ed NHL 09) non si sfidano sullo stesso piano. Al contrario del titolo 2K, infatti, la produzione Electronic Arts è diventata chiaramente di nicchia, aumentando a dismisura la fedeltà delle simulazione proposta. Nonostante a livello di gameplay, di modalità online ed offline e di cura generale il titolo EA sia più completo non riesce ad assurgere al titolo di capolavoro o di punto di riferimento per un intero genere per la mancanza di appeal nel gameplay stesso. Paradossalmente, infatti, una così marcata tendenza al realismo (potremmo definirla “a tutti i costi”) porta all'allontanamento dal mass market e ad una fidelizzazione verso una fetta davvero molto piccola d'utenza, coloro che non demordono di fronte alla difficoltà, di fronte a dover passare giornate intere per imparare a giocare. Il titolo, insomma, è consigliato solo ai veri amanti dell'hockey statunitense e non a coloro i quali cercassero solo qualche ora di tanto in tanto d'intrattenimento.

There aren't a lot of role-playing games out there -- certainly not on XBLA. That alone is reason enough for any RPG fan to give PAA:OTRSPOD -- E2 a shot. You don't have to be a fan of the web comic to enjoy Episode Two. You just have to be a fan of good games. If you hate good games, well, then this is not for you. Shoo. Go away. Play your crappy XBLA games. If you want something to pass six hours of your time and give you a few chuckles, then Penny Arcade: Yadda Yadda -- Episode Two is certainly worth 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).
