Undoubtedly, the golden age of gaming deserves commemoration. While an indie project such as Button City obviously doesn’t have access to the properties many of us fondly remember, its exploration of the era feels disappointingly empty. Even its narration about camaraderie and shared appreciation doesn’t have much to offer. Revisiting the original Animal Crossing with its anthropomorphic cast and actual NES game might make for a far more rewarding summer retreat.

Whether played individually or with an optional cooperative partner, Trigger Witch’s is a thoroughly enjoyable adventure. Elevated by a humorous script, solid gunplay, and entertaining exploration, the title feels at home on Switch thanks to a fluid framerate and responsive controls. Enjoyment of Hellbound and Debriefed hinges on how important action is for you. Players attracted to the game for the fighting might feel disappointed. In 2011, the fisticuffs were spartan and a decade later they feel archaic. But while street battles make up a signification portion of the title’s playtime, they’re balanced by a comical script and a captivating recreation of Akihabara. If skulking though Electric Town as a keyboard-wielding Shine Maiden sounds entertaining, this trip might be worth taking.
