Naruto: Path of the Ninja 2 is an admirable attempt to offer a Naruto- branded video game that isn't a fighter, or an action/adventure, or a fighter/action/adventure cross-over. And it makes improvements over last year's first Path of the Ninja by offering a greater variety of playable characters and a new story that isn't a repeat of a plotline already seen in the anime. Where the game falls short, though, is in its still-too-severe reliance on dated role-playing conventions. The random battles, uninteresting overworld exploration and lack of innovation in gameplay design beyond the expected, brief touch screen mini-games all keep it from rising anywhere above the range of "fair" as an RPG. Diehard fans of the series will enjoy it, as they've enjoyed the wealth of other products featuring the grinning face of the No. 1 knucklehead ninja over the past three years. But the rest of the DS owning crowd has far better role-playing experiences to look to on Nintendo's handheld, and shouldn't worry about walking down this Path.

There aren't a lot of role-playing games out there -- certainly not on XBLA. That alone is reason enough for any RPG fan to give PAA:OTRSPOD -- E2 a shot. You don't have to be a fan of the web comic to enjoy Episode Two. You just have to be a fan of good games. If you hate good games, well, then this is not for you. Shoo. Go away. Play your crappy XBLA games. If you want something to pass six hours of your time and give you a few chuckles, then Penny Arcade: Yadda Yadda -- Episode Two is certainly worth 1200 Microsoft Points ($15).

Judged solely on the merits of its content and its engaging combat and exploration styles of gameplay, Bully is well worth checking out. It hews closely to Rockstar's emphasis on the unheroic aspects of all of its characters and settings. By itself that's neither good nor bad, but it certainly provides for a lot less contrast than we'd like to have seen in an otherwise engaging and enjoyable story. The faction system, which seems so important to the story, is also taken completely out of the player's hands, further reducing the story's potential. Uninspired classroom minigames and PC-specific porting and performance problems continue to frustrate our experience with the game, but never so much that we weren't willing to load it back up again to uncover the next chapter of the story. Still, the fact that we're wrestling with these issues years after the game was originally released on the PS2 prompt us to ask what Rockstar has been doing with the game in the meantime.

Borrowing an existing game design can work if you inject it with your own personality, and that's exactly what Ninjatown has done. Tower Defense is already a fun game, and most things in life can be improved by adding ninjas. The brief devil invasions here (around 10 minutes each) are perfect for portable gaming. Add in the friendly single- and multicart multiplayer modes and Ninjatown offers a pretty high quality of life.

Crash has had one bumpy ride on the Nintendo DS, and I had high hopes that last year's Crash of the Titans would lead to bigger and better things for the character. But Vivendi/Activision seriously dropped the ball on this one -- last year's great outing was apparently a one time thing, and we're back to a crummy addition to the once big and popular franchise.

NBA Live 09 combines lackluster gameplay, lackluster graphics and a lackluster contingent of mini-games to form, you guessed it – a lackluster basketball game. To put it simply, this game should only be played on a dare. If you’re looking for an enjoyable basketball offering on the PSP, skip right past NBA Live 09 and pick up NBA 09 The Inside, which is a more enjoyable game in just about every regard.

ut you might be better off looking for the sequel to show up instead of diving into Earthworm Jim's underground world with this first release. Earthworm Jim 2 is a more solid experience on the gameplay side of things, while retaining the positive visual aspects of this original -- this first Earthworm Jim is pretty and likely to stir up nostalgia for many, but just doesn't handle well enough to really be a fun game to play. Invest your 800 Wii Points with caution, because your memories of Earthworm Jim as a character and cartoon hero might be making you think this first game adventure was better than it is.

After juggling the pros and cons of the game from one hand to the other, I find I'm still ambivalent about it. I depend on a game's fiction to make me finish it and Exodus from the Earth nearly scared me away upon install. I mean, let's face it; the sci-fi, end-of-the-world thing has been used almost as often as Michael Jackson's prosthetic nose, and just like that nose, every time it's applied, it just looks worse. With its solid game design undermined by a cliché story, mediocre graphics and poor localization, Exodus from the Earth is a study in failed potential. The last two-thirds of the game may contain some interesting ideas and good gameplay but many gamers may never see that, having been put off by the shabbily-handled beginning. Let's hope Parallax Art Studio has the opportunity after this to offer us a better title.

If you never experienced the halls of Rapture and have been waiting for its appearance on the PS3, there really is no discussion to be had. Go out and get your hands on BioShock -- you will thoroughly enjoy exploring the incredible story and the excellent action that the game is known for. However, if you've played the game before, or are expecting this to be the definitive version, that's can't be found here. Sure, the full trophy support and Survivor mode are great, and the Challenge Rooms could add a ton to the replayability (whenever it's implemented). However, old glitches that should've been fixed in the PS3 development hold this version back from being completely realized.

But the controls end up being more of an interesting experiment than a bother. Overall, I really like Zombie BBQ's art style, sense of humor, and solid shmup gameplay. Publisher Destineer was wise to pick this one up. Like all games in this genre, the appeal can be limited -- you shoot and dodge, that's about it. But those of us that get it, get it. If that's you, you should get Zombie BBQ. Where else are you going to find a sexy Little Red Riding hood murdering her zombified grandmother with a shotgun?

Although sometimes awkwardly paced and linear, Eternal Sonata is an RPG that everyone should consider checking out, especially for the unique premise and touching music. The battle system is rewarding and evolves throughout the game and seeing the characters interact is a lot of fun. Especially with the added features, there's really no reason for RPG-hungry gamers to pass up the PS3 version. But if you only take away one thing from this article, remember this: Chopin is the man.

PAA: OTRSPODEO is certain to appeal to fans of the strip and will get some laughs from those who still have their heads up their asses and have never heard of Penny Arcade. To its credit, the Penny Arcade team doesn't attempt to pimp its own website and nothing about this smells of marketing tripe. It's a smart, fun game that would have been truly great with a wider range of enemies and environments and a touch more depth to the gameplay.

Midnight Club: LA Remix is a solid racing title that is partly held down by the PSP's hardware limitations. For example, it looks nice, but it can be hard to see stuff in the distance, like vehicles or potential shortcuts, and the city isn't as big as I would have liked it to be. There are a couple design problems as well, such as how checkpoint markers aren't set up well enough, which can get you lost and cause you to lose events. However, the vehicles all drive really well and the multiplayer stuff can be fun. While neither LA nor Tokyo is all that big, they sport some cool racing spots, which is good. So, obviously, the game is far from perfect, but it does have enough good points to make it worth a try for racing fans. Just don't expect an experience anything like you'll find on the consoles.
