Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings is a serviceable entry in the long-running JRPG series by Gust, offering an experience that's surely entertaining, but not as good as Atelier Firis. Additionally, the lack of any real innovation in both story and gameplay departments translates into a very predictable game.

As someone who left the series several years ago, I didn’t expect to enjoy my time with Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, but I gave it a shot and had a ball. This game exceeded my expectations and I rediscovered why I fell in love with this series in the first place: the story was enjoyable, the characters were entertaining and the gameplay was solid. Yes, the lack of characters and inconsistent translation were frustrating, but I finally understand why people who played an imported copy were hyping it up: this game is good, great even. I’m very happy I gave this game a shot and if you’re a fan of niche JRPGs (or the Atelier series), you should too.

Qualora siate arrivati al commento finale, avrete certamente compreso da soli perché Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings non possa essere considerato il miglior esponente della trilogia “misteriosa”. Certo, la qualità della narrazione, del sempre appagante sistema di crafting e del combat system rigorosamente a turni lo rendono un prodotto imprescindibile per chiunque si professi un appassionato di JRPG old-school, ma l’assenza di innovazione ed il passo indietro compiuto rispetto ad Atelier Firis hanno fatto sì che la produzione ne pagasse un pesante scotto. Augurandoci che il prossimo episodio reintroduca la componente open-world, supportandola magari con uno nuovo motore grafico, non possiamo che consigliarne l’acquisto ai fan della saga lanciata due anni fa con l’avvento della prorompente e pasticciona Sophie Neuenmuller.

Al netto di una trama poco convincente e priva di personaggi carismatici, The Witch and The Hundred Knight 2 porta a casa la sufficienza con un combat system divertente e frenetico, adatto alle brevi sessioni di gioco e ai palati non troppo esigenti. La volontà di ampliare la mappa del mondo e di prolungare la longevità complessiva del prodotto, che presenta ben tre finali diversi e parecchi contenuti opzionali, comporta inevitabilmente che il giocatore si presti di continuo all'insopportabile backtracking, allo scopo di rinvenire oggetti mancati e imboccare percorsi inizialmente inaccessibili. Come risultato, difficilmente vi sentirete invogliati ad affrontare la campagna principale nella sua totalità. Ne consigliamo l’acquisto solo agli estimatori della tipica comicità di Nippon Ichi Software, da sempre fonte di grasse risate. Gli altri farebbero meglio a tenersi a debita distanza dal pur simpatico pupazzo protagonista della saga.
