As a big fan of both The Lord of the Rings and survival games, I was enticed by the idea that I can dive into a genre I already know and love with the rich lore of Middle-earth to keep me company (as well as a party of friends), but it’s disappointing to see such a promising concept do little more than a barely passable impression of better games. Combat is dull and repetitive, owing to overused enemy types and braindead AI, and limited mining opportunities or freedom with settlement building throws a wet blanket over the creativity that’s typically a selling point for the genre. Throw in rough technical performance and it becomes difficult to recommend Return to Moria to even my fellow Tolkien stans. There’s a decent game in here somewhere, as the compelling progression loop and chaotic multiplayer capabilities can make for a really good time – I just can’t give you many reasons to pick this survival game over the plethora of better options when it’s only ever by-the-numbers at best.

Alan Wake 2 è il coronamento di un incubo iniziato tredici anni fa, lasciato a fermentare nell’oscurità e dato in pasto a chi da oltre un decennio attendeva con impazienza il ritorno della serie cult di Remedy Entertainment. Da action-adventure a tinte dark a survival horror ispirato ai grandi classici, il cambio di genere voluto dalla software house finlandese è alla base di un’esperienza di gioco incredibilmente gratificante ma non particolarmente varia, con l’ingresso di un secondo personaggio come Saga e l’aggiunta di meccaniche investigative piuttosto leggere che hanno reso ancor più funzionale e audace una storia double face raccontata con uno stile unico. La follia psicologica messa nero su bianco dall’estroso Sam Lake, autore del progetto più importante della sua carriera, è riuscita nel non semplice compito di rendere il Remedy Connected Universe un posto ancora più strano e fuori dalla realtà, anche grazie a un lavoro di fino legato a un comparto tecnico che su console di attuale generazione lascia spesso a bocca aperta per lo stupore. Da qui la scelta di un verdetto indubbiamente positivo ma che non vuole spingersi oltre i reali meriti di un survival horror comunque valido, con un voto che vuole simboleggiare un doppio infinito, come il loop senza fine di un viaggio nell’orrore paranormale caratterizzato da una duplice identità con tanti aspetti in comune, proprio come le avventure oscure vissute da Saga e Alan. Se tutti gli incubi avessero la straordinaria genialità che alberga in Alan Wake 2, allora vorrei non svegliarmi per nessuna ragione al mondo.

Avec Alan Wake II, Remedy nous dévoile sans doute l’une des plus belles créations de l’histoire du studio. Le titre est le digne successeur du premier opus, nous proposant un jeu dans la même lignée, améliorant tous les aspects positifs et corrigeant pas mal de défauts du premier épisode pour nous offrir une suite quasiment parfaite. Que ce soit techniquement, au niveau du récit, de la mise en scène ou de l’ambiance, Alan Wake II coche toutes les cases. Au final, son principal point noir provient du doublage. Bien qu’il soit de grande qualité, de nombreuses parties du jeu ne sont pas doublées en français. L’autre défaut, c’est le fait qu’Alan Wake II ne soit pas disponible en version physique. Outre ces deux lacunes, le titre enchaîne les bons points et nous offre un survival-horror maîtrisé de bout en bout.

Despite its wonderful atmosphere and interesting locations, Alan Wake 2 is a middling third-person survival-horror game with sluggish pacing, a lackluster Mind Place feature, and lazy jump-scares, too concerned about being obscure and filling itself with quirky meta-references.

Dans un premier temps, Ghostrunner 2 semble être la digne évolution de son prédécesseur : une intrigue plus travaillée, des visuels flatteurs et un gameplay qui évolue à un rythme parfaitement maitrisé en récompensant le joueur comme il se doit, et une difficulté globalement bien gérée. Malheureusement, certaines nouveautés n’apportent pas grand-chose et viennent même légèrement dénaturer la formule du premier opus. Ne vous y trompez pas, le jeu reste très agréable à parcourir dans son ensemble !

Al di là di alcuni inciampi sul comparto tecnico e sull’intelligenza artificiale, Ghostrunner 2 è esattamente il sequel che ci aspettavamo. Va detto che le reali introduzioni si contano sul palmo della mano, ma il gameplay frenetico e il level design riescono sempre ad entrare in perfetta simbiosi, regalando un titolo divertente e impegnativo, ma mai punitivo.

There is nothing you’ll play this year like Alan Wake 2. The choice of two protagonists works wonderfully, with an interwoven plot that is Remedy at their best. I love the twists and turns it takes, with an incredible atmosphere set that boosts everything it touches, including the combat. Alan Wake 2 is breathtaking both visually and audibly, whether in Bright Falls or The Dark Place. Our departure thirteen years ago is long forgotten; Alan Wake's return is a triumph.

Ne siamo certi: a seconda dell'approccio e del punto di vista di chi gioca, Alan Wake 2 può essere un capolavoro senza tempo oppure un polpettone con un gameplay stancante. Noi abbiamo cercato di infilarci esattamente nel mezzo: pur apprezzando senza riserva l'incredibile lavoro svolto da Remedy sul fronte narrativo e la genialità riversata in alcune sequenze che rimarranno per sempre bene impresse nella nostra memoria, non possiamo trascurare una serie di deficienze sul fronte del gameplay che minano la profondità della componente survival horror e la varietà di questo action adventure. Allo stesso tempo però c'è una cosa che metterà tutti d'accordo: artisticamente, esteticamente e tecnicamente non ce n'è per nessuno ed Alan Wake 2 merita di essere osservato, almeno una volta, anche soltanto da lontano.

Ghostrunner 2 (fatta eccezione per la ripetitività dei suoi nemici) è una masterclass sulla creazione di un sequel. Prima si dà ai fan una versione migliorata e ampliata di tutto ciò che ha reso grande il capitolo precedente e poi si punta sull'innovazione, tanto di gioco quanto di narrativa. Il platforming in prima persona è preciso e rapido, la grafica è piena di dettagli e accattivante e il combattimento è frenetico e richiede una precisione diabolica. La frustrazione c'è, si muore parecchio e in certe sezioni c'è quasi il rischio di tirare il controller contro il monitor. La soddisfazione di portare a termine il segmento perfetto tra salti, parate e colpi di katana, però, è immensa e ci ha spinti a volerne sempre di più. Non serve conoscere il capitolo precedente, ma chi lo ha fatto ne trae un'esperienza arricchita da citazioni e rimandi. Con un'atmosfera ben curata e rifinita, Ghostrunner 2 è un'avventura che si farà ricordare da chi ama i giochi frenetici e con una bella storia da raccontare.

Ghostrunner 2 is an exemplary sequel, improving upon the original in every way. With better Energy systems, delightful and responsive bike levels, fantastic bosses, and the same quick-paced gameplay from the original, it's a no-brainer for anyone who remotely enjoyed the first.

Inutile de tourner autour du pot, Ghostrunner 2 est un must-have pour tous les amateurs de challenge et de fast FPS. Attention, il n’est clairement pas à mettre entre toutes les mains. On parle ici d’un jeu assez exigeant dans lequel on ne doit tout simplement pas prendre un seul dégât. Il n’empêche que la formule est ici à son apogée. Ce second volet va encore plus vite et plus loin que son prédécesseur. On est sans cesse stimulé, on ne s’ennuie pas une seule seconde et il est très difficile de décrocher. Ghostrunner 2 réussit d’ailleurs la prouesse de ne jamais frustrer grâce à des checkpoints malins et une liberté d’action qui laisse la place à l’expérimentation. Seul bémol, les phases en moto qui manquent cruellement de précision au combo clavier/souris et peuvent s'avérer assez difficiles. Mais si c’est le prix à payer pour s’éclater tout le reste du temps, on signe.

Tirando le somme, World of Horror è un costante tira e molla contro l'RNG. Se da un lato abbiamo un'ottima estetica e un certo senso del grottesco nei misteri narrati, dall'altro c'è un'esperienza ludica mal strutturata, che rema contro il giocatore senza dare nessun senso di soddisfazione al termine di uno scontro o di un intero mistero. L'interfaccia non aiuta, nel suo essere confusionaria e piena di elementi spesso inutili, considerato che è il gioco stesso a guidarci su dove andare. Se come visual novel sarebbe potuta andare un po' meglio, come esperienza ruolistica ma anche come gioco in sé non centra l'obiettivo, dimostrandosi un prodotto abbastanza trascurato.
