Scars Above ha dalla sua un'atmosfera molto intrigante, che per le prime battute di gioco regala quella sensazione da avventura spaziale che può ricordare mostri sacri come Metroid Prime; basta poco, però, per scoprire che l'opera di Mad Head Games è fin troppo derivativa, tanto sul fronte narrativo quanto sul fronte del gameplay. Il gioco avrebbe comunque potuto essere discreto, e per le prime fasi è facile cadere in questa illusione, ma dopo poche ore diventa chiaro che le idee presenti, pur interessanti, sono davvero poche e tendono a ripetersi per tutta la scarsa durata del gioco. Un vero peccato, perché le premesse per puntare più in alto c'erano.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty pourrait donner l’image d’un jeu se reposant uniquement sur les acquis de son prédécesseur, mais se serait se fourvoyer complètement. Certes, les codes basiques du genre sont bien recyclés mais la surcouche « China » transforme la recette, comme Nioh en son temps avec le contexte japonais. Il faut un temps d’adaptation, quand on est habitué à une approche, pour en changer sans criser, mais plus on enchaine les sessions et plus le kiff est là pour au final une expérience plus abordable que la majorité des ARPG exigeants, sans en perdre le fun. L’univers des Trois Royaumes sauce dark fantasy est aguicheur et accrocheur et la direction artistique régale. Ce voyage, même sans être exempt de tout reproche, remplit sans souci ce qu’on attend d’un jeu vidéo : du plaisir en barre !

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty sembra quasi uno spin-off di Nioh, da cui ricicla gran parte degli asset e da cui copincolla candidamente gran parte dei sistemi di gioco. Le aggiunte più di rilievo sono il sistema di morale, le stregonerie e la barra dello spirito (a sua volta del tutto simile alla postura già vista in Sekiro), che tutto sommato funzionano alla grande e riescono anche a garantire una buona varietà all'avventura. Team Ninja deve però guardare oltre e sperimentare qualcosa di nuovo, perché è da sei anni che continua a propinarci sostanzialmente lo stesso gioco di base, con piccole e non così rilevanti migliorie.

Wo Long: Fall Dynasty is a near flawless game and what I hope is just an intro to this fantastic world. Team Ninja have crafted a game that takes the basic structure of Nioh and other Souls-likes and creates their own unique, rewarding, and brutally challenging experience. In its almost forty hour campaign I was constantly surprised by the amount of new locations, creative boss fights, and sheer ambition of the game. It may be early in the year, but I’d be surprised if any game beats Wo Long for the top of my year-end list.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a solid successor to the Nioh series that manages to carve out its own identity, but it’s not without flaws. Parrying is satisfying and combat in general is a high point, but linearity and some poor bosses hold it back from being truly memorable. However, you’ll still have a good time if you go into this with the right expectations — and the PC version gets the fixes it needs.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dark fantasy take on the Three Kingdoms. The difficulty is high, almost seeming insurmountable at first, but part of what makes Wo Long great is how the difficulty isn’t unfair. The gameplay is structured where players are rewarded for learning the fighting style of their enemies and using their mastery of their own skills against them. It can be frustrating and requires patience to master, but it’s such a great feeling to finally overcome a strong adversary. Challenge alone does not make a game great, but Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty excels in every area from artistic design to gameplay mechanics. Watching nameless warrior execute their different moves is akin to a ballet of brutality. The gameplay mechanics are are smooth and responsive as the game is challenging, making it a joy to invest the time in mastering the battle system. This isn’t the Three Kingdoms setting we were expecting, but it is the Three Kingdoms game we needed.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty è un ottimo souls-like. Il nuovo titolo modifica e migliora sotto certi aspetti la formula dei titoli del genere di Team Ninja, e risulta molto convincente soprattutto pad alla mano e negli scontri. Ho apprezzato tanto la “semplicità” anche nel potenziamento del personaggio e l’introduzione del livello Morale, ma sono rimasto un po’ deluso dal comparto tecnico e soprattutto dal level design, con mappe troppo anonime e in generale molto piccole e ripetitive. Nel complesso, comunque, non posso che consigliare il lungo viaggio nella storia della dinastia Wei e il grande fascino di un numero incredibile di personaggi storici e di creature fantastiche, soprattutto agli appassionati del genere ma non solo. Per quanto brutale, infatti, trovo che Wo Long possa essere un ottimo entry level per i nuovi arrivati, ma attenzione: se avete poca pazienza e la paura di morire ludicamente parlando è troppo forte, statene alla larga!

BROK the InvestiGator BROK the InvestiGator è un piccolo grande trionfo per lo sviluppatore Breton Fabrice. Tematiche importanti ed una trama matura sostengono una produzione ardita, che mescola coraggiosamente meccaniche prese dalla tradizione delle avventure grafiche ad elementi RPG e ad un sistema di combattimento da beat'em'up a scorrimento. L'opera firmata COWCAT è una spumeggiante miscela che riesce dove molti titoli blasonati hanno fallito: mettere al primo posto la libertà di ogni vostra azione, al costo di concrete e tangibili conseguenze. Anche al netto di qualche imperfezione e sbavatura, le avventure di Brok e Graff non potranno deludervi. PRO Scrittura di livello, con tematiche profonde e personaggi credibili | Un mix di generi che esalta la varietà ed il ritmo | Doppiaggio inglese di qualità, coadiuvato da ottimi testi in italiano | CONTRO Le fasi di combattimento non sono impeccabili | L'estrema varietà di approccio potrebbe non essere apprezzata da tutti | Un racconto agrodolce che affronta temi poco adatti ad un pubblico giovane |

Scars Above è un titolo che ha tanti difetti e pochi pregi. Sicuramente le meccaniche da third-person-shooter sono azzeccate ma, ad esempio, i combattimenti all’arma bianca sono letteralmente inguardabili. La storia che gira intorno al titolo non colpisce particolarmente e presenta qualche problematica, con il villain principale scritto in maniera non ottimale. Per non parlare dell’Art Direction che, nonostante sia gradevole da vedere, risulta poco ispirata e non dà la percezione di esplorare un pianeta sconosciuto. Insomma, Scars Above è un progetto che avrebbe potuto dare molto, ma molto di più, ma purtroppo le scelte apportate al gioco sono risultate veramente poco azzeccate ed entusiasmanti, almeno la maggior parte.

Le ambientazioni ispirate e l’elemento tattico alla base del gunplay sono certamente apprezzabili ma non riescono a far superare i confini della sufficienza a Scars Above. Molti degli errori e delle leggerezze si devono alla gioventù dello studio di sviluppo, che è stato comunque in grado di definire una lore credibile e approfondita e un intreccio completo ma non pienamente soddisfacente. Se avete una passione smodata per lo spazio e il cinema di fantascienza, potreste prendere in considerazione l’idea di accompagnare Kate nel suo viaggio ma, in caso contrario, i motivi che dovrebbero spingervi a provarlo si riducono notevolmente.

Despite the simplicity and a few missteps, I actually quite liked the roughly seven hours I spent playing through Scars Above. The story was interesting, the environments were diverse and lovely to look at and the sound design and music were sensational. I’d describe this as something akin to a refreshed PlayStation 2-era sci-fi shooter rather than a contemporary title, but I say that with a fondness for it, rather than disdain. I think that Mad Head Games should be proud of what it’s achieved, and if third-person shooters are your thing, I’d encourage you to check it out.

El resultado final es un juego que se deja jugar y anima a completar las 10 horas que nos ha llevado terminarlo, pero que dista mucho de alcanzar la maestría en su propuesta. Localizadores que marean y pierden más que ayudar, objetos perdidos por el mapeado de forma que parece aleatoria y unos puzzles basados casi tan solo en la exploración completan una fórmula que no pasa de resultona y que aunque he llegado a disfrutar en algunos momentos, me ha dejado con ganas de terminar la aventura y pasar a jugar a otra cosa. Ojo, no digo que sea una mala propuesta pero en un momento como éste en el que tenemos el calendario lleno de grandes lanzamientos, Scars Above no deja de ser un juego entretenido que tira de elementos conocidos para formular su oferta de juego.

Scars Above shows a lot of potential in its third-person shooting, fun elemental reactions, and a good number of creatures to experiment with. The thrill of setting out to discover a new alien world is short-lived, however, due to the weapons and gadgets in your arsenal quickly growing so powerful that nothing poses a threat. And while there are a few excellent environments to explore, everything within them – the characters, story, and universe – feel weak and underdeveloped, giving you few reasons to stop and smell the alien roses once you’ve blasted your way through.

Destiny 2: Lightfall is a disappointing expansion with a campaign that falls flat on its face, an underwhelming new destination, and only a few new standout activities to take on. That said, Strand and the new Tormentor enemy are fantastic new additions to the sandbox, some of the endgame activities and added difficulty make for a sweaty, memorable time, and per usual, the raid is a complete blast (even if it isn’t their best). No doubt Lightfall’s shortcomings are made more painful by immediately following The Witch Queen and its strong post-launch updates, which felt like Destiny 2 had finally overcome its storytelling woes and charted out a promising future for itself. After playing Lightfall, perhaps too fittingly given its name, that future doesn’t look quite as bright.

The expansion is almost everything I could have asked for, but delivered in a bit of an underwhelming way. I was glad to see all that I had hoped for, but I wasn’t eagerly anticipating anything. The biggest high point for me is Strand, but the initial story was such a letdown that it actively took away from an otherwise enjoyable campaign playthrough.

Destiny 2: Lightfall is far from Destiny's worst expansion, but just as far from its best. For every step forward, there's another step back, and what you get out of it ultimately comes down to what you prioritize. It simply isn't as well rounded as The Witch Queen, but still offers many excellent gameplay additions and quality-of-life improvements that elevate the whole experience.

Un début de saison un peu mollassion, Destiny 2 reste un plaisir à jouer, mais Eclipse a du mal à faire oublier certaines campagnes passées, comme La Reine Sorcière ou Le Roi des Corrompus.
