Whether it’s exploring the open city of Los Angeles or pointing fingers at suspects, LA Noire feels right at home on Switch. The mature, serious film noir storyline is just as effective as ever, filling a much-needed gap in the Switch’s lineup of games. The quality-of-life improvements like HD Rumble, touchscreen support, and interrogation changes offset the unchanged wonky combat and occasional technical hiccups to make the Switch version the premier way to experience LA Noire. It is a positive sign of Rockstar Games’ support for Nintendo Switch.

A lot of this review is framed within the context of Assassin’s Creed as a whole and its shortcomings, in a lot of ways, it has to be. A series can’t go on for ten years, take a break, and then return with almost all of the same damn issues. The extra year of development time paid off and ensured that Assassin’s Creed Origins likely wouldn’t underwhelm its audience by repeating its past sins. Instead, it modernized itself by adopting a more open structure and intuitive set of controls and gameplay systems, effectively marking a new chapter in the franchise. It’s fitting that Origins showed the birth of the Assassin’s Creed while also indicating the much-needed rebirth of the Assassin’s Creed series.

Other than a few technical issues, I have to say the game exceeded my expectations. Sure, the story can be a little all over the place, but that’s the cost of taking the franchise in a little more in-depth direction. The New Colossus firmly establishes the alternate universe that we were introduced to in The New Order and is an excellent foundation for future entries in the series. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus wraps up the feeling of a blockbuster movie in something you can interact with. There’s a lot of games that do that, but the spectacle here is outstanding, and the fast-paced gunplay and compelling main story made me want more when the credits rolled. Killing Nazis is one of the most fun and wholesome things a person can do, and there’s no better way than to do it with Wolfenstein 2.

But really the question should be what does the game add? Madden NFL 18 perhaps marginally improves on graphics that still feel stuck in the past, it introduces an ultimately flawed story mode and a gameplay mechanic that you’re better off not using. All the while, it’s most notable new addition, the “Play Live Now” feature, feels like you could get the same experience from a mobile phone app. Oh they have one of those, too, you say? Great. I’m of two minds on Madden NFL 18. It’s hard to be flat-out negative on it, because, at its core, it is still the same, compulsively playable experience you’re used to getting from the series, and die-hard football fans (like myself) are going to enjoy it for that reason, while even crazier fans are going to dig deeper into it than any thought possible. But as far as adding anything new and of value, Madden NFL 18 is mostly devoid, and for that reason it’s also difficult to recommend when you have just a one-year-old predecessor that will offer the same core experience for half the money.
