Ultimately I’m not sure that fusing action and strategy for the latest Valkyria was a wise move, especially when the latter ultimately feels tacked-on in comparison with the depth found in previous games. Throw in gameplay that feels wholly isolated from Revolution’s original, compelling, but also convoluted and overwrought plot and narrative delivery, and overall pacing and flow end up becoming a weak point despite their success during individual sections. I’ll emphasize again that Revolution is not Valkyria Chronicles 4, nor is it a full $60 title; $39.99 will net you the full experience, and for that price the game is, if nothing else, a very solid value. In my estimation series newbies lacking preconceived expectations will probably have the most fun with Revolution, but it’s hard to imagine fans being thrilled with the game’s at-times confused direction even if they do fully understand its proclaimed spinoff nature.

It’s difficult to imagine executing a remake of a near 30-year-old experience more effectively and efficiently than Intelligent Systems has, applying just the right amount of refinement and new ideas to antique gameplay systems that clearly still work. One objective shortcoming is the lack of map and win condition variety (“rout the enemy” is all too common), but with battlefield support conversations and multiple strategic approaches to keep you busy, it’s unlikely to bother most. Add in superb character design, captivating anime cutscenes from Studio Khara, and the aforementioned visual novel garnish that so effectively ties everything together (there’s voice acting too) , and you have the epitome of what a quality remake ought to look like. My one wish to Nintendo is that they either keep the Echoes sub-series going or consider applying some of these changes to new Fire Emblem games; they’re really that good, and what’s been concocted here deserves to be more than a series one-off. The charming, reliquian nature of the game may not appeal to everyone, but if you like Fire Emblem, strategy, and can appreciate gaming history, then there’s absolutely zero reason not to pick this up.

NBA Playgrounds is not bad for $19.99, but even at that price it sorely lacks depth and slightly lacks polish to an extent that makes it difficult to wholeheartedly recommend. It’s true that Switch isn’t exactly swimming in arcade sports options, so if you simply crave NBA Jam-style basketball thrills with friends over beers, then you’ll probably be satisfied. Most single-player content can be completed in an afternoon otherwise though, and while chasing legendary players and wacky dribbling moves is fun, it wasn’t enough incentive to hold my attention. If there’s never another arcade-style hoops title for Switch, then Playgrounds certainly meets my bare-minimum needs. It could have been so much more though, and as such I’m hoping Saber Interactive comes back with a fleshed-out second attempt (maybe another sport?) sometime down the road. In the meantime, Playgrounds delivers the outrageous exhibitions you’re looking for – just don’t expect it to provide much else.

The Caligula Effect is full of promising ideas that are bogged down by poor execution and lackluster presentation. The game tries too hard to do too many things all at once, resulting in obvious compromise. There is a lot of content to experience, but it is all riddled with flaws, making it an unsuitable replacement for Vita fans disappointed in the lack of Persona 5.

A good horror game should make you dread the idea of playing it, but keep you glued to the screen while you actually are. Outlast 2 is that game. While more involved fans might be disappointed as to how the story resolves, I found it hit the sweet spot between overly expository and frustratingly vague. Segments from Outlast 2 are forever burned into my memories, acting as much as a traumatic experience as it was an exhilarating one. The thematic elements present throughout make the game even more high-stakes, taking a toll on you as a moral human being. God doesn’t love Outlast 2 – not like I do.

If you haven’t played the original Bulletstorm, then Full Clip Edition is well worth your time if you simply want the definitive version and have always wondered what its unique brand of butchery might be like. That said, despite clear effort toward graphical enhancements, it’s simply a much harder sell for those who have already played the game. $60 MSRP isn’t exactly cheap, and while it’s true there are already opportunities at acquiring the game for less floating around online in plain view, the fact remains that the original PS3, Xbox 360, and PC editions don’t look all that bad. Call it a symptom of issuing a remaster under the 10-year mark, but it’s the reality. Regardless, minor worries shouldn’t hold you back if you simply want the game, and if you do opt for Full Clip Edition you’ll surely have a blast with its wacky Skillshots and outrageous, funny, and somehow oddly affecting story just like before. There’s an argument to be made that the likes of DOOM and Quake Champions owe Bulletstorm for warming up the public to the unabashedly macho, gore-heavy shooter style that is clearly seeing a resurgence right now. Keep your expectations in check regarding Duke Nukem, and you should enjoy the experience just fine.
