LEGO City Undercover was already a great game when it released on Wii U four years ago and this new release takes that and tweaks it just a bit. The overall experience is a little smoother and the addition of co-op is a nice touch, and even though there’s nothing substantially new here, those that missed out before will want to check out LEGO City Undercover this time around.

Overall, Toukiden 2 is a determined step forward for Koei Tecmo’s action series. It keeps the unique setting and complex mechanics that made this one of the few hunting games that have rightfully earned a dedicated following, and adds an open-world system and gameplay possibilities that solidifies its position not just as one of the best Monster Hunter alternatives, but as an action game on its own. It’s just the graphic limitations that will keep this from appealing to a bigger audience.

For Sony’s languishing PS Vita platform big releases are few and far between and Tearaway forms the figurehead of Sony’s portable Christmas lineup. For fans of portable gaming, the Vita or even just a good platformer, Tearaway is a must have. It mixes up traditional gameplay by adding some new elements but where Tearaway shines most is in the presentation and design areas. Many games have used the cameras on the latest generation of portables to “put you in the game” but nothing does that task quite as successfully as Tearway, which is a love letter to the Vita’s unique features and uses them expertly to create a game that rises above other creative platformers of its ilk.

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 on the Vita will blow your mind. Maybe not for what you've seen before on previous console offerings of the title, but by just how well the Vita handles it all.

Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin isn’t a true successor to the first game, that’s coming with Psychonauts 2. Instead it serves as a fun side adventure, utilizing PlayStation VR to put players right into the world of the game. It does this well, with the usual excellent writing expected of Double Fine. The point-and-click gameplay is fun, and works well in VR, but the puzzles can and will stump you at some points, causing some extreme frustration. A short game, it is nonetheless worth trying out, especially if you were a fan of the original.

For Honor is one of the best multiplayer action titles in years. It’s focus on brutal, almost slow paced combat is unique, while still feeling wholly familiar in the annuls of pop culture. The game puts you right into the shoes of history’s greatest warriors, then pits you against each other in fantastic ways. The single player campaign isn’t worth much more than a single playthrough, and the unlock system is a bit much, but players will find themselves jumping into multiplayer matches over and over again just to experience the adrenaline rush offered by the frenetic, but controlled combat.

The Digimon World series has always required a lot of patience and that is mostly the case again in Digimon World: Next Order. While a robust digivolution system features plenty of layers to explore while raising your partner Digimon in a very faithful follow-up to the original, the game’s lackluster battle system may hinder newcomers to the franchise from really enjoying Digimon World: Next Order.

Yoshi’s Woolly World was one of the best looking games on the Wii U and that has translated quite well to the Nintendo 3DS with Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World. The titular Poochy is mostly an ancillary piece of the game through a series of mini-games and shorts, but they pair well enough with the other new additions to make one think about double dipping with Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World.

Tales of Berseria isn’t a reinvention of the series, but it delivers a more emotional story mixed with a great combat system to make this adventure worth taking. The game’s fantastic cast keeps things entertaining even during moments where nothing particularly noteworthy is happening in the plot, and the way the character’s develop throughout the game is endearing. The dungeons are nothing to write home about, but the game’s consistently-thrilling battles are able to pick up some of the slack.

Yakuza veterans will certainly appreciate Yakuza 0 more than newcomers, despite SEGA ditching all the convoluted baggage of the previous games. Unfocused to a fault, Yakuza 0 has plenty of activities packed into this dense open world title, though few leave you feeling satisfied. Beyond the era and location-specific authenticity strived for and achieved in this title, both the dated combat and graphics leave something to be desired.

Gravity Rush 2 hits all the same notes as the first game, but in better and more refined ways. The combat is still pretty dull, but it takes less of a focus this time around. Everything else is much improved, and given how well the first game was received, that’s high praise. Some other changes could be made to make for a better experience, and the story still kind of feels all over the place, but if you’re looking for something quirky, fun, and unique then Gravity Rush 2 will certainly satisfy.

Dead Rising 4 is able to take the best elements of the older and newer games in the series and mash them into a spectacular open-world zombie-slaying experience. The game’s core gameplay is just so engaging and enjoyable that diving into hordes after hordes of zombies to wreak havoc never gets old, and having Frank West back in the action makes it even better. The series is certainly in a much different spot now than it was 10 years ago, but its future has never looked brighter.

The reverence for the series’ past in both gameplay and the attention to the smaller details is what ultimately makes Lara Croft GO a love letter to the 20-year-old Tomb Raider series. It offers even more of what the original game did last year and with the added benefits of more powerful hardware, making this a no-brainer for PlayStation gamers.

December is the perfect time of year to release a winter sports game as the temperature is dropping and snow is starting to fall in many parts of the country, and Steep transports players right into the Alps themselves for a wintery experience. The recreation of the mountains looks fantastic and it is a lot of fun to traverse them using the four different sport options, but unreliable input controls and many buggy moments are a steep hill to overcome to classify Steep as a great game.
