Escape Dead Island never manages to create anything impressive, with very little in terms of redeeming qualities. It tries to stand out from the other installments in several ways by taking on a new direction, but it ends up providing a frustrating and bland experience that is easy to recommend skipping.

BioWare has created a whole new beast this time around. Dragon Age: Inquisition is not only a notable improvement over its predecessors, it achieves a new standard for the genre. You'd be hard-pressed to find an aspect of this game that doesn't completely shine and draw you in.

Lords of the Fallen is a solid action RPG, but it isn’t without its flaws. The weighty combat, while enjoyable, is offset by disappointing difficulty and a lacking narrative. It is a commendable first attempt whose follow-up, if there is one planned, could stand as a worthy rival to the Souls series.

Madden NFL 18 marks a second consecutive year of Madden football in a holding pattern. Features and additions to this year’s game either just don’t feel noteworthy, or miss the mark entirely. However, with no where else to turn, virtual gridiron fans will certainly get enjoyment out of Madden 18. As consoles are hitting maturation, hopefully Madden hasn’t peaked and continued use of the Frostbite engine will bring more noticeable improvements to the visuals of the game in the coming years. As far as features go, continuing to build out CFM and offering more options for players who just want to play online without the MUT overhead would be welcome

Nidhogg 2 is a unique and incredibly intricate game that succeeds in sucking you into its addictive nature, whether you are a newcomer to the series or a veteran looking for a fresh challenge.

What was once a mediocre game series has been made even worse. Technical issues and gameplay blunders are somehow shadowed by a bulky, contrived plot that believes in quantity over quality.

Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age is not a perfect game, but it’s pretty damn close. With all the things it did right, my only complaints by the end of the game was its overall lack of difficulty and the way magick was handled, but neither had a particularly significant impact on my experience. Square Enix managed to take a game that was already great and made it even better by bringing it to the PS4, and, quite frankly, this is the shining example of how remasters should be — improving the game in multiple aspects while keeping the core gameplay intact. As such, there will be plenty of fun for both veterans and newcomers alike: the former will be able to see how things have changed since they last played whichever version they’re familiar with, while the latter will be able to enjoy an enhanced version of one of the best Final Fantasy titles ever. Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age can most aptly be described as the modernization of a game which, in its day, was a modernization of the classic Final Fantasy formula; and now I’m looking forward to seeing how Square Enix applies that modernization to future titles in the series.

Crypt of the Necrodancer marries rhythm and roguelike in a unique way — It feels accessible, fun, and fairly difficult at any given moment. If you enjoy roguelike but have grown tired of its many recent iterations, Crypt of the Necrodancer feels entirely fresh.

Guitar Hero Live is a bold step in a new direction for Rhythm games. While everyone might not take kindly to the restrictions put on players in Guitar Hero TV, there's a seemingly endless number of playlists and challenges to complete, with room to grow going forward.

The Surge’s unique spin on combat and customization coupled with some tried and true gameplay mechanics from the Souls series coalesce nicely for what feels like a familiar experience in an entirely new setting.

The handful of complaints I have about NBA Playgrounds don’t really take away from fun this game offers as a whole. There’s definitely good times to be had, the progression system is worthwhile, and online can be incredibly competitive despite the potential for connection issues. NBA Playgrounds is the new king of the cartoon court, even if there isn’t much competition anymore.

As far as first person action games go, Arkane Studios is probably the best in the business. Proving that the studio has no shortage of interesting ideas, Prey is the perfect blend of thrilling action and thought provoking story. Who needs a new Bioshock or Half Life game when we’re getting experiences like these?

All in all, Volume is a game that has been carefully and lovingly developed into a polished title that strips stealth down to its satisfying core. It shows us that limitation really does breed creativity, delivering a thrilling, accessible experience in bite-sized pieces.
