XCOM is a great addition to the strategy genre, complete with an engaging campaign full of tension and challenges. The characters grow in satisfying ways, but the tactical game doesn't ever quite give players enough room to make the most of their abilities.

Playing Cortex Command breaks my heart. With online multiplayer, improved AI, more scenarios and a more fleshed out campaign it could be something truly great, but for now it’s just a number of cool ideas and great looks grafted onto noticeably repetitious level design and sub-optimal local multiplayer. Modding it can extend the enjoyment, but the most basic product you’re purchasing just fails to become anything more than a passing distraction.

It's a shame that Dishonored's story isn't greater than the sum of its decidedly memorable parts, but its gameplay absolutely is. Each mission is built as an elaborate network of choices for players to explore, and the same can be said for Corvo himself. Each player's selection of powers, perks and other upgrades will inform how they see and interact with this world, and no two play-throughs will be exactly the same. Dishonored is a game you'll talk with your friends about, and that you'll want to play multiple times. In this game there are always other paths to be taken and other challenges to conquer, and that's a refreshing thing indeed.

As a licensed product, One Piece: Pirate Warriors passes, and even succeeds. The accuracy with which it apes the look and feel of the show is laudable, and on that strength alone, it probably warrants a purchase from any series fan. Combat-wise, it isn't a lick better or worse than any of the previous Musou games Omega Force has churned out, but if you still find this particular brand of action enjoyable, there's just enough fun to outweigh some of the dubious design snafus. But make no bones about it,: this is Musou by the numbers. You can't get more risk averse than a Dynasty Warriors clone with an anime license attached, and it plays as derivative as it sounds. Someday, someone is going to build action fans the 3D arcade beat 'em up we deserve, but sadly, today just isn't that day.

Each version of Angry Birds Trilogy offers enough extras and enhancements to the base experience that it's certainly reasonable to call Angry Birds Trilogy the definitive edition for Rovio's million-selling titles. But the fact remains that these same games have already sold those millions. No matter how pretty they are on the big screen or how the presentation is re-packaged, it's still re-packaged. And for much, much more money than before. Angry Birds Trilogy is a good compilation with over 600 levels to fling your way through, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum. If you've already spent your $2.97 before, you should save yourself the $40 bucks and just go back to your iPhone. If you're absolutely, unhealthily addicted to all things Angry Birds though, feel free to pick up this package. It was only a matter of time before it existed, and now that it does, it is admittedly pretty.

War of the Roses isn’t quite Mount and Blade or Battlefield, but it manages to walk a fine line between the two models to produce an innovative and enjoyable experience. Its mere two gameplay modes and seven maps feel limited and its learning curve might frighten away the most casual players, but its combat feels properly bloody and rewarding, and there’s enough customization available here to stave off any fears of a winter of discontent. There’s a chance that Fatshark will make the price of admission easier to swallow with its promises of regular upcoming content, but, even in its current state, it's one of the best (and only) takes on chaotic open medieval combat.

Pokémon White Version 2 is far more than a traditional mid-generation release, with enough new and repurposed content to keep you occupied for months on end. It offers an addicting, expertly crafted and glorious realization of turn-based role-playing at its best, and functions as the most complete and balanced Pokémon game yet, as well as the full realization of what a 2D Pokémon adventure should look, feel and play like. If you played Black or White - get this game. It's an even more refined version of that already excellent experience, with more than enough "new" to set itself apart. If you're seeking a deep, portable RPG, regardless of whether you’ve ever thrown a Poké ball in your life - get this game, as it’s one of the crown jewels of the genre on the DS hardware. And finally, if you've played Pokémon before and want to experience the richest experience the series has to offer - look no further than Pokémon White 2.

Should you get Worms Revolution? Well, if you’re a lapsed Worms player like myself, then absolutely. It’s the same classic Worms gameplay with (optional) gameplay tweaks and a lovely new coat of paint. If you’re a die-hard fan, then the classes add a new element to multiplayer competition, and make the customisation options even more robust. All told, this is a great game for a great price.

Bad Piggies is the best title Rovio has released yet, eclipsing Angry Birds Space. The open-ended puzzles work your brain while also allowing you to be creative. Thanks to Rovio’s infectiously amusing, cheerful style you’ll be smiling ear-to-ear watching your creations come to life regardless of whether you succeed or fail.

Evolution and ambition are only natural for a franchise as old as Resident Evil, as is the need to respect a long-lasting legacy and the fans that have come to appreciate it. But in trying to serve all masters, Resident Evil 6 loses focus and fails to accurately assess which of its elements are truly worthy of being included. When this game is at its height, it sets new standards for the series in every way. Unfortunately, there are no shortage of lows either, taking what could have been an excellent experience and making it something considerably lesser.

It’s both scary and exciting to think how good a game we might get if NBA 2K actually had a serious competitor pushing it to new heights. But even when left with a clear, unobstructed path to the basket, 2K13 throws down a monster jam with this year’s edition – probably the last one developed solely for this generation of consoles. It’s obviously the best hoops game out there, and it might even be the best sports game of all, period.

Dead or Alive 5 is, without any question, the best entry in the series. It retains its identity as a fast-paced, visually stunning 3D fighter, while shedding much of the baggage that's typically held it back. While there's still plenty of eye candy for both the ladies and gents, it's taken a back seat to what fighting games should be all about: fighting. It gives the casual fan a fighting experience that's as easy to grasp as it is exciting to watch, while providing more serious players the depth and features they need to stay interested. Give Dead or Alive 5 an honest chance, and you’ll find a formidable, enormously entertaining fighter that will keep you busy for a long time to come.

We may have been the last to get this, but PSN owners weren't really crying out for yet another tower defense game. Luckily, 11 Bit Studios has crafted something that feels markedly different from the already diverse offerings PlayStation 3 owners can choose from. The lack of online co-op stings given that it's 2012, but what's here is more than enough to justify the purchase price if you like your tower defense played (mostly) solo.

Torchlight II doesn’t do anything radically new, but does everything incredibly well. It fits all the pieces of varied monster behavior, interesting items, excellent skill design and random surprises together into a near-perfect formula, where the action never stops and rewards are never far away. Every level up, skill boost and item replacement flirts with a sense of invulnerability in a world obsessed with killing you, demanding continued play by teasing eventual omnipotence. The story and characters aren’t particularly memorable, but that hardly hurts the strength of Runic’s focused design in what’s one of the finest loot-driven action-RPGs available.

Many developers have attempted to reinvent the modern and classic platforming genre on buttonless touch screen devices to varying successes and failures, but Rayman Jungle Run's ingenious controls work perfectly. It's as much of a joy to play as it is to watch unfold, even with the occasional hiccup in stage design or balance issues.

So FIFA 13 is a refinement of a winning formula rather than an entirely new equation. While the gameplay changes are more subtle, they really consolidate upon the success and innovation of FIFA 12. But that success hasn’t bred laziness – there are new features, new services, even new leagues. If you’re a fan of the sport or FIFA in general, it’s hard to imagine a game that you’ll enjoy more this year.
