Syndicate hints at a fantastic puzzle meta-game, but relies on bullets flying to get through every level. Where the story walks a familiar road, the cooperative campaign’s tough-but-fun arcade action makes up for the missteps. Though uneven, Syndicate remains a good shooter full of incomplete great ideas. Grabbing three friends and battling for corporate supremacy online is well worth your time, but don’t expect to be wowed by playing alone.

F1 2011 isn't quite up to the excellent standard of the console version, but it's still far, far better than the 3DS instalment. Gripes aside, this is still a good sign of things to come for racing games on PS Vita. We just wish it felt more at home on Vita. As it stands it's just not all the game it could have been.

MotorStorm RC is a taste of what arcade gaming used to be like all those years ago. It’s refreshingly simple and doesn’t get bogged down with trying to be the biggest or the fastest and as a result it’s a lot of fun. The idea of being constantly connected to the leaderboards is a stroke of genius, especially because it’ll pull in times for people playing on both Vita and on PS3, but perhaps MotorStorm RC’s crowning glory is its price. This would’ve been a great game for 10 quid or 20 bucks, but at £4.79 / 5.99 Euros (US priced still to be confirmed at the time of writing, but it works out at just under $8) it’s a steal. It’s by no means perfect – the inclusion of proper online multiplayer would’ve added another point – but you’d be hard-pushed to find a game as good as this for the price. If MotorStorm RC is an indication of the kind of quality gaming Vita will offer at such an attractive price then maybe Vita does have what it takes to stay the distance.

These sorts of problems don't ruin the game, but they do diminish it slightly. For an adventure absolutely beaming with personality and potential, the gameplay experience wasn't quite as fine as I would have liked, but it doesn't make Escape Plan anything less than a great game in its own right. It's just unfortunate, because it could have been more with slightly better execution. Still, the game absolutely reeks of nonsense and humor, which is exactly what you'd expect from a team partially comprised of the squad that brought PlayStation Network gamers Fat Princess several years ago. Appropriately priced on the PSN at $15, Escape Plan is a worthy purchase, especially if you're looking for a pick-up-and-play game that can be digested very slowly, one morsel at a time. I just hope Fun Bits Interactive gets a crack at a sequel, because Escape Plan can easily be better than just great.

Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational has a nice, colorful approach to golf and a respectable set of multiplayer options. But the disconnect between the amount of time required to plan a shot and the milliseconds needed to mess it all up sparks ample frustrations. Wasting 30 minutes of your time with no failsafe mechanic built-in seems harsh for a game that claims to make golf more palatable to non-golfers. And overcoming difficult courses provides much less reward than the time investment deserves. Even though Hot Shots has charmed plenty of gamers like me, I don’t think this relationship will work.

If you weren’t crazy about Ninja Gaiden the last three times, this is the same game, so keep walking. Likewise if you already played either Black or Sigma, you’re probably ok to hold off, too. But for those of you that only played the 2004 original, or missed the game entirely, you’ve now got a beefed up, extra content edition that you can play anywhere. That’s worth flipping out and killing dudes over.

Like its predecessor from more than 15 years ago, Twisted Metal celebrates an eccentric kind of action that shoves fun down the collective throat of the gaming masses. It includes an enjoyable, challenging single-player campaign and incredible multiplayer support for both on and offline. Twisted Metal only falters when it comes to its storytelling and an occasionally stubborn lock-on system. Even with a transforming ice cream truck in its roster, Twisted Metal deserves some respect.

Remedy has built a world that, despite being a fantastical realm of twisting shadows and realities, is solidly anchored in authenticity. Outstanding environmental design and some brilliant visuals and sound make Bright Falls and its mountainous surroundings look and feel alive. Though the camera can cause issues and the supernatural story that's more interested in asking questions than answering them, it's a tough game to put down once you've started. Remedy's done a great job of mixing elements of written work, television, and video games to create an experience full of scares, laughs, and thrills that's just as fun to play as it is to watch.

While Gabrielle’s Ghostly Grooves 3D provides a creative, memorable world full of lovable characters, the gameplay itself comes off as kind of run-of-the-mill. Still, if you love rhythm games, Ghostly Grooves brings enough personality, laughs and fun to make it well worth your time.

Asphalt Injection is a fun racing game, but it lacks depth, precision, and doesn’t push the Playstation Vita to anything resembling its true potential. Asphalt 6 costs 99 cents in the App Store while Asphalt Injection sports a price tag of $29.99. At its current tier, that’s a steep price for a simplistic racing game that only benefits from tighter controls and more processing power without really washing off the sense it’s a really polished iPhone game.

Wading through BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend’s massive vocabulary and doubly complex battle systems will demand time and patience from any gamer. But the cast powering this engrossing fighter makes all the effort worthwhile, and the huge variety of modes dresses up play in different ways. Also, you can fight as a squirrel lady that brawls with metal crosses strapped to her arms. Why are you not running to the store right now?

Dungeon Hunter: Alliance isn’t as polished as Diablo and lacks the charm of Torchlight. Battling through its varied levels and sorting through mountains of loot is fun, when glitches don’t get in the way. Unfortunately, when it costs $28 more to hack and slash through the adventure on Vita than on Playstation 3, one must question the value of the package. The added Vita elements and the glitches just don’t go far enough.

Michael Jackson: The Experience HD does what few rhythm games can: allow for physical improvisation in the midst of a choreographed routine. Not just the freestyle section, mind you, but an actual variation in gesture type. This goes a long way in making the music both fun and personal. Unfortunately, like the other Michael Jackson games, Vita’s first rhythm game suffers from a short setlist and only one real mode of play. It’s a shame the experience ends in a tragic few hours, as dancing with your fingertips offers a special sort of enjoyment fitting for the King of Pop’s best tracks.

The past few years seem to have convinced some critics that "artsy" platforming games ought to be short affairs, but Rayman is much, much better than that. There are a magnitude of stages to explore here, epic boss fights, unlockable character skins, hidden stages galore and hours upon hours of frantic fun. The notion that imaginative visuals and matinee-priced entry fees need be mutually exclusive is one Rayman Origins continues to dispel as hour after hour of gaming joy continue to ramp up in both sheer scope and in grand gratification. Rayman Origins takes on a genre mastery of ground work laid down decades ago and elevates it to astronomical new standards. It's a spectacular living painting that's as much fun to play as it is to look at, and it's a total triumph. Your move, video game industry.

Touch My Katamari is well-controlled and fun while it lasts, but it feels like the series has stagnated. The touchscreen controls are welcome, but I wish the developers had been a bit more creative with the Vita’s functionality. Imagine using the Vita’s augmented reality capabilities to roll a Katamari ball around your actual living room? Or standing on an apartment balcony and rolling a giant Katamari around your neighborhood? Or indeed doing something, anything, other than the exact same thing that Katamari fans have been doing since 2004? Instead we get the same old Katamari experience once again, and while it’s a solid entry point for newcomers, there’s honestly nothing to see here for long-term fans. This is one rolling stone that has noticeably gathered moss.
