Gotham City Impostors is a functional shooter with a sense of humor and a Batman license. It's got plenty to unlock, but it's not all that deep. Go, shoot, win. Over and over. If you're looking for a first-person shooter that doesn't take itself seriously, have at it, but don't expect a FPS revolution.

The sheer amount of new content in UFC Undisputed 3 is staggering. The devs have managed to combine elements to make the experience less intimidating while still adding in a ton of new features to keep hardcore fans engaged. Taking some time off to rethink their game plan was a great move by the developers, and it really shows. This is the deepest and most realistic MMA experience around.

Grand Slam Tennis is as slick and professional a tennis game as you could hope for, and though it lacks something of Top Spin's passion for the sport, the inclusion of Wimbledon and the wider roster really do make a difference. There's room for improvement – chiefly in the variety of game modes, the selection of commentary snippets and the pace of the career mode - but for now, Grand Slam Tennis 2 is the best game of tennis that video games have to offer.

Burying a really adept Match 3 game inside a fantasy/magic approach that seems designed for children is an, er…interesting idea. Nonetheless, the core gameplay is very strong and the price is certainly right. It is not a grandiose overstatement to say that 4 Elements II feels, at times, like an IQ test; a thoroughly addictive, my-god-it's 2AM-and-I'm-still-playing IQ test. With fairies.

If you enjoyed Rhythm Heaven for the DS, Rhythm Heaven Fever is more of the same. The music is memorable, the style is outrageous and the 50 mini-games are addictively fun. The downside is that it hasn’t seen any true evolution since its first installment on the GBA. You can’t continue a rhythm series without fixing its flawed grading system. And you can’t tack on a multiplayer mode when that’s the only innovation a game is bringing to the table - especially for a system that is known for its party offerings. Fever’s failings are a true shame, as they are both obvious shortcomings with simple remedies. They hold back what is otherwise a unique and fun rhythm game. It’s still a blast, even despite its flaws, but that doesn’t make those flaws acceptable.

As a gamer who likes to relive some of my favorite games, I find the HD collections to be an awesome way to get rewarded for nostalgia. And now Sony has released two of the three platforming hall of famers from the PS2. While I find myself more disappointed than I expected that games like Jak X, Daxter and even The Lost Frontier (ugh) aren’t included in the package, The Jak and Daxter Collection has reminded me why I fell in love with the series, and Naughty Dog as a developer.

Despite some problems with polish and a story that takes time to develop into something great, The Darkness II ends up as an early treat in the new year. The narrative elements help the pacing considerably, breaking up Jackie’s engaging and brutal murderfests. It may not end up being the best shooter of 2012, but it could very well be the one that makes you feel the most powerful.

Resident Evil Revelations is a great handheld game, one that not only pushes the boundaries and standards of the Nintendo 3DS but one that recaptures a long-forgotten spirit of a classic franchise. Make no mistake about it, this is a full Resident Evil adventure that isn't watered down because it's in portable form. That's no small accomplishment. Despite its disappointments, Revelations will be remembered as one of the better entries in this series, and should serve as a notice to all other developers, including Nintendo itself - this is the type of production value we want to see on the 3DS.

The core of the first game remains intact, of course -- if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? -- but Shank 2 is the embodiment of grand change on a small scale. Developer Klei was aggressive about smoothing rougher edges, and the minor tweaks in Shank 2 make a major difference. It's a more responsive, faster action title that does away with the damning side of its dazzling animation. This is a smooth brawler with gorgeous spectacle, and its dedication to nailing its second chance makes it one of the best action games in recent memory.

Zack Zero's elemental platforming and bright colors might grab your attention, but its inconsistent gameplay and embarrassing glitches will waste your time and money. Little redeeming value lies here, especially when you suffer through the poorly-written story and awful narration. Zack Zero deserves a slightly better score than its namesake -- but not by much.

Soulcalibur V is at its absolute best with friends, when it's testing your skill, reaction times and trash talking ability. The combat is still great and the graphics are still beautiful. Outside of that, it's a slight disappointment, as this is the weakest single player experience in the series yet. The game just never attempts to give us something we haven't seen before. It's more comfortable recycling the same old gameplay with a few additions pilfered from other trend-setting fighting games. Shame, because in many ways this is a quality title, with plenty of depth in its combat, and refinements that will keep diehard fans busy.

The Simpsons Arcade is a throwback to a bygone era, when an arcade game’s ultimate goal to toss as many enemies at you as possible while pushing you along and gobbling up as many of your quarters as it possibly could. For those not weaned in the coin-op heyday, The Simpsons Arcade might feel too repetitive and too short. However, for those of us who were, The Simpsons Arcade is an absolute blast.

When you bundle together three games that people define as "classics," you expect an amazing product. The Metal Gear Solid Collection delivers that. The controls, stories and content so many fell in love with years ago are here, but time shows up as Solid Snake's greatest enemy. Modern conveniences have led gamers to expect certain things from their stealth action, and the early titles don't deliver that. Still, games can't move forward without knowing where they've been, and the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is a welcome, enjoyable glimpse at what once was.

Oil Rush offers a lighter style of strategy gameplay. It automates a large percentage of combat and production, challenging you to instead built turrets and manage fleet movement to capture and defend territory. The simple unit relationships and straightforward mechanics can be fun, though some of the gameplay elements beyond your control hinder the experience more than they should. The flawed story mode can be safely passed by, but if you're able to find an opponent online or skirmish against the AI it's easier to appreciate Oil Rush's strengths.

NeverDead sways between boring, frustrating and painful. It serves to remind us why fun-to-play heroes in video games keep their head and limbs intact. It is the video game equivalent of those trashy drug store action movies starring nobody actors, the five dollar sort that you only buy to give away as gag gifts. Do not be fooled: NeverDead represents the bottom of the barrel in video gaming. Do not buy it.

Kingdom Rush is an instant classic and is guaranteed to turn up on 2012 “best of” lists. Anyone remotely interested in either tower defense or strategy should consider it a most-own. Gamers that think they don’t enjoy the genre should give Kingdom Rush a shot anyway – it might just win you over.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 proves itself the better game, but it lacks the same focused storytelling employed in the original. It benefits from an improved battle system, open environments, and an overall level of polish that deserves a nod of respect. Despite its severe lack of closure, Final Fantasy XIII-2 still deserves your time, especially for a few poignant moments set at the end of days.
