Need for Speed ProStreet is a disappointing effort in a franchise that has generally been rather solid. It sort of feels like EA is starting over again, leaving the open-world aspects to other games like its own Burnout Paradise, but is seems like Black Box didn't know what to do with what was left. It could have still been a decent game had the cars driven well, but unfortunately their performance is shoddy. Car lovers will find something to like here due to the customization options, but Need for Speed has certainly seen better days.

At its core, Unreal Tournament 3 offers exactly what its predecessors (specifically UT '99 and '04) did to make it so popular: preposterous action at blindingly fast speeds. It's all over the top, soaked in blood, nonsensical (hoverboards and stealth tanks?) and bathed in an electric light. Warfare mode is an excellent addition to the series, proving to be a deeper version of onslaught, and the additional Necris vehicles make both it and VCTF all the more worthwhile and enjoyable. Then there are all the smaller scale but still very much significant changes, like the hoverboards, warfare orbs, and slight variations to weapon functionality that work to keep the game from getting stale. Deathmatch, however, still feels very similar, and is therefore less of a draw for me. If you've been playing the series all along, expect the same sort of thing only with a sparkling graphical luster. If you've never played this game before, do so immediately. It's still one of the best shooters on the market, even if it seems to be bumping against the boundaries of its potential. Keep in mind if you've never particularly liked UT, this version will do absolutely nothing to sway you.

Because it's still just a passable platformer in the end, and for the increased pricetag of 900 Wii Points charged for Neo Geo titles on the VC, you should be getting more than just something passable. If you want platformers, even co-op ones, there are already several other, cheaper options to be found and enjoyed in the Shop. If you want a game with cute, colorful graphics, there are plenty of those to be had as well. And if you want a game where the hero dresses up like an insect, Mario and his new bumblebee suit say hello. So there's little truly fresh content to be found in this download, and the wait will continue for a really excellent, immediately recommendable Neo Geo title to find its way to the Virtual Console. Maybe if we're lucky, we'll get a true classic before the end of the year.

Puzzle Quest has been one of the pleasant surprises of 2007. The unlikely marriage of puzzle gameplay with RPG mechanics makes for one of the most addictive experiences of the year. On its journey to the PS2, though, Infinite Interactive made some terrible design choices that hinder enjoyment of the game. If you haven't played Puzzle Quest, yet, this is still worth a look. It comes with a seemingly endless set of quests, different classes to try, and spells to master. The coupling of casual and hardcore gameplay is a marriage that will last -- they just had a really ugly baby.

Geometry Wars Galaxies is about as hardcore of a game as you can get. The entire experience is based on survival, gaining a ton of points for surviving through insurmountable odds, and being quick with kill-all bombs in order to push score multipliers to the highest level possible. This is no casual game, so only retro fans need apply. If you were a fan of the previous Geometry Wars games (or hark back to the days of Super Smash TV, Heavy Barrel, and Total Carnage), you’ll absolutely love what Sierra has done with the design, as Geometry Wars Galaxies is more of the same, but a whole lot more of the same. On the other hand, the game is best suited for quick bursts of play, and still feels like a bulked up piece of download software, so it’s a shame that it hits the Wii at $40, rather than arriving on Wii Ware for a fraction of the cost. If the game were $20 it’d be one of the best values on the system (and in turn, scored much higher), but as it stands we can only recommend this one to gamers that know they’ll be pushing the product to the limit, as the added content – amazingly cool it may be – comes at eight times the price from the original Retro Evolved. If this sounds like your kind of game, by all means grab it on sight. For those that wait, however, keep an eye on this one, as it’ll become an increasingly strong offering as it drops in price.

Operation Creature Feature is a short, fun game that serves as an excellent demonstration for what the PlayStation Eye can do. However, its disappointing length and imbalanced gameplay (precision vs. puzzles) may be cause for concern. If you're desperate for more games that use the PlayStation Eye, $4.99 is a reasonable price for something with some pretty impressive features to it, but be cautious of the super easy puzzles which may disappoint gamers looking to exercise their mind; you're really only exercising your arms in this one.

Though High Velocity Bowling is a little short on overall content (and no, offering to let us buy more characters isn't really what we had in mind), it's a fun little game to fire up and play with friends. Sure, the basic idea is similar to stuff on other consoles, but the execution is definitely unique enough that both games can happily co-exist. Online head-to-head play would have been nice, but overall, HVB is surprisingly decent.

The biggest problem with Eternal Night is just how pointlessly difficult it is. Even early on the game treated me to near-constant falling deaths and gang-up enemy attacks, but I wanted to push on and beat the game if only to see how it all ended. Unfortunately, a section with constantly spawning enemies (peppered with numerous NeoGAF and #vidgames member references, hi Gaz!) was my undoing. After boss fights over bottomless pits, sloppy platforming bits and a spoon-fed storyline, battling wave after wave of enemies was the breaking point. Just thinking about the part makes me want to punch babies; it's pointlessly difficult and absolutely unnecessary. Come to think of it, that describes the whole of Spyro's latest outing rather nicely.

Undertow is a perfect fit for the Xbox Live Arcade. It's fast, fun, attractive and can support 16 players online. The concept is distilled down to the basics, letting the idea and its execution speak for themselves. At 800 Microsoft Points ($10 USD), this is a game that offers enough fun to support the price tag. Grab a few friends and dive in, the water's fine.

With Orcs & Elves, do not expect a role-playing game with the production levels of a Final Fantasy or a Mass Effect. It’s a mobile phone game brought to the Nintendo DS, but don’t call it a port: the game looks and plays so much better than any version already on the market. The game’s back-to-the-basics approach goes against the grain that probably wouldn’t work on any other system but a portable one…and it indeed does work on the Nintendo DS. Even with its limitations, Orcs & Elves’ fast-paced, turn-based style is a refreshing change of pace from the evolved role-playing game design, and deserves a playthrough even if you love the epic presentation of those other RPGs.
